The Taiwanese Map of Axial Spondyloarthritis: Living with the Condition.

: The International Map of Axial Spondyloarthritis (IMAS) explores the physical, psychological, and social experiences of patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). This initiative is now being expanded to Taiwan as the Taiwanese Map of Axial Spondyloarthritis (TMAS). We aim to provide rheumatologists with insights into the perspectives of Taiwanese patients, enabling physicians to better understand the unmet needs of these patients and optimize their management.

Stabilization of mitochondrial function by chlorogenic acid protects against kainic acid-induced seizures and neuronal cell death in rats.

The current study investigated the effect of chlorogenic acid, a polyphenolic compound found in numerous plant products, on a kainic acid-induced seizure rat model and its potential mechanism. Rats were administered chlorogenic acid (10 and 50 mg/kg) intraperitoneally for 30 min before kainic acid (15 mg/kg) intraperitoneal administration. Pretreatment with chlorogenic acid decreased the seizure score, increased the latency to onset of the first seizure, and decreased the mortality rate.

Adaptation behaviors modify the effects of body fat on heat-related symptoms among Taiwanese elderly.

Background: The aging process increases body fat and susceptibility to heat-related illnesses. The relationship between body composition and symptoms associated with exposure to extreme heat among the elderly is unclear. Additionally, the influence of individual adaptive behaviors in mitigating these risks has not been adequately explored.

Propolis Has an Anticancer Effect on Early Stage Colorectal Cancer by Affecting Epithelial Differentiation and Gut Immunity in the Tumor Microenvironment.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers and is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the world. Due to the westernization of diets, young patients with CRC are often diagnosed at advanced stages with an associated poor prognosis. Improved lifestyle choices are one way to minimize CRC risk.

Noninvasive cardiac radioablation for ventricular tachycardia: dosimetric comparison between linear accelerator- and robotic CyberKnife-based radiosurgery systems.

Background: Few dosimetric comparisons have been published between linear accelerator (LA)-based systems and CyberKnife (CK)-based robotic radiosurgery systems for cardiac radio-ablation in ventricular tachycardia. This study aimed to compare the dosimetry of noninvasive cardiac radio-ablation deliverable on LA with that on CK.

Methods: Thirteen patients who underwent noninvasive cardiac radio-ablation by LA were included.

Impact of respiratory motion on F-FDG PET radiomics stability: Clinical evaluation with a digital PET scanner.

Purpose: F-FDG PET quantitative features are susceptible to respiratory motion. However, studies using clinical patient data to explore the impact of respiratory motion on F-FDG PET radiomic features are limited. In this study, we investigated the impact of respiratory motion on radiomics stability with clinical F-FDG PET images using a data-driven gating (DDG) algorithm on the digital PET scanner.

Association of mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate with adverse outcomes in chronic hemodialysis patients.

Phthalate exposure is widespread and has a global impact. Growing evidence shows that mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) exposure has a negative impact on human health. However, whether MEHP exposure is associated with mortality and other adverse outcomes in hemodialysis patients remains unknown.

Anticonvulsant effect of equilibrative nucleoside transporters 1 inhibitor in a mouse model of Dravet syndrome.

There are limited therapeutic options for patients with Dravet syndrome (DS). The equilibrative nucleoside transporters 1 (ENT1) mediate both the influx and efflux of adenosine across the cell membrane exerted beneficial effects in the treatment of epilepsy. This study aimed to evaluate the anticonvulsant effect of the ENT1 inhibitor in an animal model of DS (Scn1a mice).

Focused ultrasound for brain metastases: an update on global clinical trials.

Background: Despite advances in immunotherapy and targeted treatments for malignancies of the central nervous system (CNS), the treatment of brain metastases (BMs) remains a formidable challenge, due largely to difficulties in crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB), drug resistance, and molecular discrepancies. Focused ultrasound (FUS) is a non-invasive tool for BBB breaching, tumor ablation, enhancing drug delivery, promoting the release of tumor biomarkers for liquid biopsy, or the tumor microenvironment disruption. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the current literature related to FUS and its application in the treatment of brain metastasis.

The effect of circular stapler size on anastomotic stricture formation in colorectal surgery: A propensity score matched study.

Background: Small circular staplers possess the advantage of being relatively easy to use when compared to larger circular staplers. However, there is some contention as to whether the use of small circular staples in colorectal surgery increases the incidence of anastomotic strictures. This study aimed to determine whether the frequency of anastomosis site stricture formation differs depending on stapler size when performing anastomosis in colorectal surgery.

Heterogeneity of cancer stem cell-related marker expression is associated with three-dimensional structures in malignant pleural effusion produced by lung adenocarcinoma.

Introduction: Cancer stem cells have been described in lung adenocarcinoma-associated malignant pleural effusion. They show clinically important features, including the ability to initiate new tumours and resistance to treatments. However, their correlation with the three-dimensional tumour structures in the effusion is not well understood.

Aims: Enhancing life satisfaction is vital for adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD). Life satisfaction potentially correlates with a health-promoting lifestyle and grit. However, the mediating role of grit-a trait marked by perseverance and long-term goal-oriented passion-between a health-promoting lifestyle and life satisfaction in ACHD remains unverified.

Risk Factors and Incidence of Serious Infections in Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Undergoing Rituximab Therapy.

Objective: To evaluate the risk and protective factors of serious infection (SI) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) within 180 days of rituximab (RTX) treatment.

Methods: Patients with SLE treated with RTX were analyzed. SI was defined as any infectious disease requiring hospitalization.

Haematopoietic cell-derived exosomes in cancer development and therapeutics: From basic science to clinical practice.

Background: The tumour microenvironment (TME) is a specialised niche involving intercellular communication among cancer cells and various host cells. Among the host cells, the quantity and quality of immune cells within the TME play essential roles in cancer development and management. The immunologically suppressive, so-called 'cold' TME established by a series of tumour-host interactions, including generating immunosuppressive cytokines and recruiting regulatory host immune cells, is associated with resistance to therapies and worse clinical outcomes.

Machine learning strategy for identifying altered gut microbiomes for diagnostic screening in myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular junction disease with a complex pathophysiology and clinical variation for which no clear biomarker has been discovered. We hypothesized that because changes in gut microbiome composition often occur in autoimmune diseases, the gut microbiome structures of patients with MG would differ from those without, and supervised machine learning (ML) analysis strategy could be trained using data from gut microbiota for diagnostic screening of MG. Genomic DNA from the stool samples of MG and those without were collected and established a sequencing library by constructing amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) and completing taxonomic classification of each representative DNA sequence.

Rituximab induction and reinduction in granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis: A retrospective multicenter study in Taiwan.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) under rituximab induction and reinduction therapy in Taiwan.

Methods: We performed a retrospective study in patients with GPA or MPA receiving rituximab therapy from August 2008 to July 2020 in seven medical centers in Taiwan. The clinical characteristics and outcomes of these patients were analyzed.

A Novel Technique for Autograft Preparation Using Patient-Specific Instrumentation (PSI) Assistance in Total Hip Arthroplasty in Developmental Dysplasia of Hip (DDH).

Due to the change in the structure of the proximal femur and acetabulum in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip, total hip arthroplasty (THA) was difficult to perform for surgeons. To elevate the acetabular coverage rate, we developed a technique in the use of a patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) graft in patients with developmental dysplasia of hip (DDH) undergoing surgery. This study aims to evaluate the peri-operative outcomes of THA with PSI graft in patients with DDH.

Interplay of Chemokines Receptors, Toll-like Receptors, and Host Immunological Pathways.

A comprehensive framework has been established for understanding immunological pathways, which can be categorized into eradicated and tolerable immune responses. Background: Population aging is emerging as an increasingly acute challenge for countries around the world. One particular manifestation of this phenomenon is the impact of osteoporosis on individuals and national health systems. Previous studies of risk factors for osteoporosis were conducted using traditional statistical methods, but more recent efforts have turned to machine learning approaches.

Background: The management of knee osteoarthritis involves various treatment strategies. It is important to explore alternative therapies that are both safe and effective. Collagen peptides have emerged as a potential intervention for knee osteoarthritis.

The Worsening Renal Perfusion Index Predicts the Prognoses of Heart Failure Patients Treated with Sacubitril/Valsartan.

Introduction: Sacubitril/valsartan (S/V) reduces all-cause mortality in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), but it may decline their estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR). In addition to eGFR, this clinical study aimed to develop a blood urea nitrogen (BUN)-based index to evaluate the status of renal perfusion and then identify predictors of all-cause death or heart transplant in patients with HFrEF receiving S/V.

Methods: From the recruited 291 patients with HFrEF who were prescribed S/V from March 2017 to March 2019, we collected demographic, drug history, laboratory, echocardiographic, and clinical data from 1 year before S/V initiation until December 2020.
