Anti-MDA5 antibody-bearing (anti-MDA5)-dermatomyositis (DM) or polymyositis (PM) is notorious for causing rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RPILD) and/or cancers with high mortality rate. However, anti-MDA5 antibodies (Abs) are also found in other connective tissue diseases and their link with RPILD, especially with regard to the mortality rate, are unknown. We retrospectively recruited 71 patients bearing anti-MDA5-Abs in serum, stratified them in terms of a presence or absence of RPILD, and evaluated their clinical features, laboratory findings, associated myositis antibodies, concurrent connective tissue disease (CTD) as well as newly developed malignancies.

The role of body composition parameters in sorafenib-treated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients is still not fully elucidated. Here, we aimed to evaluate the impact of computed tomography (CT)-based body composition parameters on the survival of such patients. In this multicenter study, we analyzed the data of 245 sorafenib-treated HCC patients from January 2008 to December 2019.

Lumbar disc bulging or herniation (LDBH) is one of the major causes of spinal stenosis and related nerve compression, and its severity is the major determinant for spine surgery. MRI of the spine is the most important diagnostic tool for evaluating the need for surgical intervention in patients with LDBH. However, MRI utilization is limited by its low accessibility.

Background: Large-for-gestational-age (LGA) neonates have increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and adult metabolic diseases. We aimed to investigate the relationship between plasma angiopoietin-like protein 4 (ANGPTL4), a protein involved in lipid and glucose metabolism during pregnancy, placental function, growth factors, and the risk of LGA.
Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study and recruited women with singleton pregnancies at the National Taiwan University Hospital between 2013 and 2018.

Introduction: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) has increased dramatically in recent decades, and there are increasing indications that dementia is related to T2D. Previous attempts to analyze such relationships principally relied on traditional multiple linear regression (MLR). However, recently developed machine learning methods (Mach-L) outperform MLR in capturing non-linear relationships.

Objectives: WHO has recommended same-day antiretroviral therapy (SDART) initiation since 2017; however, higher attrition rates were noted in developing countries.
Methods: We included newly diagnosed people with HIV (PWH) from 2018 to 2022 at 18 hospitals around Taiwan. SDART initiation was defined as starting ART on the same day of HIV diagnosis and rapid initiation as starting ART within 14 days of diagnosis.

Background: Vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1), a dual-function glycoprotein, has been reported to play a crucial role in inflammation and tumor progression. We conducted a community-based cohort study to investigate whether serum VAP-1 could be a potential biomarker for predicting incident cancers and mortality.
Method: From 2006 to 2018, we enrolled 889 cancer-free subjects at baseline.

Background: Immune-mediated diseases (IMDs) after nucleic acid-based vaccines have been sporadically reported since their introduction during the worldwide COVID-19 crisis. Confirming their cause-effect association remains challenging. We analysed the effects of AZD1222 (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19), BNT-162b2, and/or mRNA-1273 on the development &/or deterioration of IMDs in terms of the time of clinical onsets of IMDs after exposure to these vaccines.

Predicting the length of hospital stay for myasthenia gravis (MG) patients is challenging due to the complex pathogenesis, high clinical variability, and non-linear relationships between variables. Considering the management of MG during hospitalization, it is important to conduct a risk assessment to predict the length of hospital stay. The present study aimed to successfully predict the length of hospital stay for MG based on an expandable data mining technique, multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS).

The present study evaluated the effect of ursolic acid, a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid, on glutamate release in rat cortical nerve terminals (synaptosomes) and its neuroprotection in a kainic acid-induced excitotoxicity rat model. In cortical synaptosomes, ursolic acid produced a concentration-dependent inhibition of evoked glutamate release with a half-maximum inhibition of release value of 9.5 μM, and calcium-free medium and the P/Q -type Ca channel blocker, ω-agatoxin IVA, but not ω-conotoxin GVIA, an N-type Ca channel blocker, prevented the ursoloic acid effect.

Background: The use of magnetic resonance linear accelerators (MR-LINACs) for clinical treatment has opened up new possibilities and challenges in the field of radiation oncology. However, annual quality assurance (QA) is relatively understudied due to practical considerations. Thus, to overcome the difficulty of measuring the dose with a small water phantom for TRS-398 or TG-51 in all external beam radiation treatment unit environments, such as MR compatibility, we designed a remote phantom with a three-axis changeable capacity for QA.

Objective: The EULAR task force recently published the difficult-to-treat RA (D2T RA) definition, however, a definition of D2T axSpA is still lacking and limitations in this definition exist. The objectives were to study the characteristics of D2T axSpA patients using the EULAR definition and to study a subgroup of patients with a predefined more stringent definition including a temporal criterion.
Methods: A multicentric retrospective study was performed.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a comprehensive intervention recommended in international and Taiwanese guidelines for patients with acute myocardial infarction. Evidence supports that cardiac rehabilitation improves the health-related quality of life, enhances exercise capacity, reduces readmission rates, and promotes survival in patients with cardiovascular disease. The cardiac rehabilitation team is comprehensive and multidisciplinary.
