Weight change is significantly associated with risk of thyroid cancer: A nationwide population-based cohort study.

Obesity is a risk factor for many cancers including breast, esophageal, colon, and thyroid cancer. We aimed to evaluate the association of thyroid cancer with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and weight change. This nationwide population-based cohort study included 11,323,006 adults who joined the national health screening program.

Developing a clinical scoring system to differentiate deep-seated atypical lipomatous tumor from lipoma of soft tissue.

Background: Atypical lipomatous tumor (ALT) is a low-grade malignancy that frequently occurs at a subfascial anatomical location. While marginal excision is adequate for lipomas, excision with a surgical margin is suggested for ALTs. However, ALTs and lipomas are difficult to differentiate preoperatively, even with the help of imaging studies.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to prospectively validate the Korean Cancer Study Group Geriatric Score (KG)-7, a novel geriatric screening tool, in older patients with advanced cancer planned to undergo first-line palliative chemotherapy.

Materials And Methods: Participants answered the KG-7 questionnaire before undergoing geriatric assessment (GA) and first-line palliative chemotherapy. The performance of KG-7 was evaluated by calculating the sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), positive and negative predictive value (PPV and NPV), balanced accuracy (BA), and area under the curve (AUC).

Waist Circumference and All-Cause Mortality Independent of Body Mass Index in Korean Population from the National Health Insurance Health Checkup 2009⁻2015.

Background: Waist circumference (WC) is an index of abdominal obesity and associated with co-morbidities and mortality. Higher WC is positively associated with increased mortality; therefore, we examined the relationship between WC and mortality in Korean populations with the interaction of body mass index (BMI) and WC for mortality.

Methods: A total of 23,263,878 subjects (men = 11,813,850 and women = 11,450,028) who were older than 20 years and underwent the National Health Insurance Service health checkup were included.

Number of remaining teeth and health-related quality of life: the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2012.

Objectives/aims: With the Euro-Qol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) system, we investigated the relationship between the number of remaining teeth and QoL using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 2010-2012. A total of 17,417 participants, more than 19 years old, were finally included in this study (men = 7394 and women = 10,023). Through this study, we have discovered that the remaining teeth affect overall health and that the fewer number of them may indicate a lower quality of life, as well.

Long-term Efficacy of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Monotherapy for Multidrug-Resistant Chronic HBV infection.

Background & Aims: There are no globally agreed upon treatment guidelines for patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) with multidrug resistance (MDR). We conducted a multicenter, prospective, real-world cohort study of effects of tenofovir disoproxyl fumarate (TDF) monotherapy and TDF-based combination therapy, as rescue therapy, in patients with multidrug-resistant chronic HBV infections.

Methods: We recruited patients with chronic HBV infection with resistance to antivirals from 8 tertiary hospitals in Korea.

The expanding morphological and genetic spectrum of MYOD1-mutant spindle cell/sclerosing rhabdomyosarcomas: a clinicopathological and molecular comparison of mutated and non-mutated cases.

Aims: Spindle cell/sclerosing rhabdomyosarcomas (SC/SRMS) feature spindled and/or rounded rhabdomyosarcomatous cells within variably hyalinised stroma. Only 30-67% of SC/SRMSs harbour neomorphic MYOD1 p.L122R mutations, indicating heterogeneity in this RMS type.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty reduces the incidence of depression caused by obstructive sleep apnea.

Objective: To investigate the increase in the incidence of depression in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its preventability by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP).

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, data from the Korea National Health Insurance Corporation were analyzed. A total of 160,840 participants (age ≥ 20 years) who were newly diagnosed with OSA between 2007 and 2014 were included.

Association between body mass index and mortality in the Korean elderly: A nationwide cohort study.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and mortality in the elderly. This study was a nation-wide population-based retrospective cohort study of the National Health Insurance System-Senior Database (NHIS-SD). In this study, a total of 75,856 subjects were identified and selected from among 251,593 individuals aged ≥ 65 years who underwent health screening at least once between 2009 and 2012 and who had no history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Risk Factors for Hinge Fracture Associated with Surgery Following Cervical Open-Door Laminoplasty.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the risk factors for hinge fracture (HF) and non-union during cervical open-door laminoplasty (CODL).

Methods: We included 25 patients who underwent CODL with available serial computed tomography scans acquired at 2 days and 1 year postoperatively. Patients' medical records and radiographic data were reviewed.

Heart Transplantation in a Patient Without a Heart: A Case Report.

We report a heart transplantation in a patient with no heart. A 60-year-old man suffered from severe infective endocarditis, and due to extensive involvement of the myocardium, only minimal myocardium was left after debridement of the necrotic myocardium and aortic annulus. We finally excised the entire heart to eradicate the infection source and employed 2 extracorporeal membrane oxygenations for full life support.

Renal Function Changes Under Everolimus Plus Cyclosporine or Everolimus Plus Tacrolimus After Heart Transplantation.

Everolimus (EVR) can be used with calcineurin inhibitors to reduce the risk of renal dysfunction, with similar immunosuppressive effect. In this study, we compared renal function after heart transplantation (HT) under EVR with cyclosporine (CSA) or tacrolimus (TAC). Between 2004 and 2014, EVR with CSA or TAC was used in 117 HT at the National Taiwan University Hospital.

Changes in Renal Function After Heart Transplantation.

Unlabelled: Renal function after heart transplantation (HTx) typically follows a biphasic pattern and an initial decay within 1 to 2 years. Trajectory of renal function after HTx is less reported, especially in Asia. The aims of this cohort study were to describe the changes in HTx recipients' serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels 5 years following HTx in Taiwan.

Survival Outcomes of Oversized Cardiac Allografts in Pediatric Patients-A Single-Center Experience in Taiwan.

Objectives: An oversized cardiac allograft may have a negative impact on survival outcomes according to previous studies; however, due to the shortage of pediatric donor hearts, the use of oversized cardiac allografts is sometimes inevitable. In this study, we reported the survival outcomes of pediatric patients in relation with the donor-recipient weight ratio.

Methods: Twenty-eight children, aged 3 months to 17 years, with dilated cardiomyopathy underwent primary cardiac transplantation at the National Taiwan University Hospital between 1995 and 2012.

Outcomes of Heart Transplant Recipients With Preexisting Malignancies.

Background: Ensuring careful selection of heart transplant recipients with pretransplant malignancies (PTM) has been suggested in several retrospective studies. However, cancer survival rates continue to increase and we still lack outcomes data on PTM patients who have undergone heart transplantation (HT) within the Asian region. Herein we report pretransplant characteristics and outcomes among PTM patients with HT.

Structural and Functional Brain Connectivity Changes Between People With Abdominal and Non-abdominal Obesity and Their Association With Behaviors of Eating Disorders.

Abdominal obesity is important for understanding obesity, which is a worldwide medical problem. We explored structural and functional brain differences in people with abdominal and non-abdominal obesity by using multimodal neuroimaging and up-to-date analysis methods. A total of 274 overweight people, whose body mass index exceeded 25, were enrolled in this study.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty May Reduce the Incidence of Dementia Caused by Obstructive Sleep Apnea: National Insurance Service Survey 2007-2014.

Study Objectives: Numerous studies have found that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) causes or exacerbates dementia, including Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia. However, the evidence is often conflicting. Moreover, no study has investigated the effect of surgical treatment for OSA on dementia.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have demonstrated that patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) exhibit gray and white matter abnormalities that are correlated with various genetic and neuropsychological measures. However, few MRI studies have focused on the correlations between brain abnormalities and overall motor function including gait performance. Here, we investigated the correlations between brain abnormalities, as assessed with MRI including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and motor performance, as assessed with the Medical Research Council sum score (MRCSS), 6-minute walk test (6MWT), and hand grip power, in patients with DM1.

Waist circumference and risk of 23 site-specific cancers: a population-based cohort study of Korean adults.

Background: Large waist circumference (WC) is a risk factor for several site-specific cancers, but a large-scale systematic investigation across all common cancers adjusted for potential confounders has not been conducted. This study aimed to evaluate the possible links between WC and common cancers.

Methods: We prospectively examined the association between WC and the risk of cancers in a 7-year cohort study of nearly 22.

Association between abdominal obesity and increased risk for the development of hypertension regardless of physical activity: A nationwide population-based study.

The presence of abdominal obesity and lack of physical activity are both risk factors for the development of hypertension. The aim of this study was to analyze the risk of developing hypertension according to baseline waist circumference (WC). In total, 16 312 476 non-hypertensive participants who were covered by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) from 2009 to 2012 in Korea were included in the study.

Tracheal tubes lubricated with water to reduce sore throat after intubation: A randomized non-inferiority trial.

Background: Sore throat is common after tracheal intubation. Water can be used to lubricate tracheal tubes, but its benefit has not been validated. We thus did a randomised non-inferiority trial to test the hypothesis that a tube lubricated with water does not reduce sore throat after tracheal intubation.

Importance of androgen-deprivation therapy during enzalutamide treatment in men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer following chemotherapy: results from retrospective, multicenter data.

Background: Enzalutamide can significantly prolong the survival of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). However, there is a paucity of evidence on continuing androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) for mCRPC. Here, we analyzed the effect of concomitant ADT during enzalutamide treatment in men with mCRPC following chemotherapy.

Generic sofosbuvir-based interferon-free direct acting antiviral agents for patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection: a real-world multicenter observational study.

Real-world data regarding the effectiveness and safety of generic sofosbuvir (SOF)-based interferon-free direct acting antiviral agents (DAAs) for patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection remain limited. A total of 517 chronic HCV-infected patients receiving 12 or 24 weeks of SOF-based therapies were retrospectively enrolled in 4 academic centers in Taiwan. The rate of sustained virologic response at week 12 off-therapy (SVR) and that of treatment completion were assessed.

Risk Factors for Restenosis after Drug-coated Balloon Angioplasty for Complex Femoropopliteal Arterial Occlusive Disease.

Background: Currently, there exist limited data on patient outcomes following the use of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) to treat complex femoropopliteal arterial occlusive lesions. The aim of the this study is to investigate the outcomes of patient treated with DCBs and to identify the predictors of restenosis.

Methods: We retrospectively investigated medical records from 120 patients (137 limbs) treated with DCBs for femoropopliteal lesions at a single center between 2013 and 2016.
