This work reports on the validation of a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric method for the simultaneous quantification of more than 700 mycotoxins and other secondary fungal metabolites and plant toxins in pasta, biscuits, crackers and musli. The "dilute and shoot" approach was found to be fully applicable to these complex matrices, as only 7-14% of the analytes exhibited significant matrix effects while recoveries of the extraction were outside the target range of 70-120% for only 26 compounds. Data on repeatability (based on 7 brands per matrix) and on intermediate precision was compliant to the related < 20% criterion for 95-98% and 99% of all analytes, respectively.

Currently, the authentication of ground black pepper is a major concern, creating a need for a rapid, highly sensitive and specific detection tool to prevent the introduction of adulterated batches into the food chain. To this aim, head space gas-chromatography ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS), combined with machine learning, is tested in this initial, proof-of-concept study. A broad variety of authentic samples originating from eight countries and three continents were collected and spiked with a range of adulterants, both endogenous sub-products and an assortment of exogenous materials.

Thirty strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae E8.9 (wild type) were used to formulate fifteen combinations of starters by mixing two or three LAB with the yeast (ratio LAB: yeast, 10: 1). Such combinations were used to prepare rye sourdough and their performance in term of acidification and biochemical characteristics during fermentation at two temperatures (30 and 37 °C) and duration (4 and 8 h) were screened.

Within the last decades, in the EU, there has been an increasing interest in toxic plant alkaloids as food contaminants, especially after the continuous and growing consumption of plant-based foods compared with food of animal origin. In this regard, the once neglected presence of these tropane alkaloids (TAs) and pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) has recently been reconsidered by the European Food Safety Authority, highlighting the lack of data and the need to develop risk assessment strategies. For this reason, the emphasis has been placed on detecting their occurrence in food through the development of accurate and sensitive analytical methods to achieve the determination of these compounds.

Geographical provenience is nowadays a relevant aspect of the authenticity and the quality of many food commodities. Dehydrated apple cubes/slices represent an ingredient commonly used by food companies for bakery products. However, this apple-based matrix is not so known and studied from an analytical point of view.

Thermal desorption direct analysis in real-time high-resolution mass spectrometry (TD-DART-HRMS) approaches have gained popularity for fast screening of a variety of samples. With rapid volatilization of the sample at increasing temperatures outside the mass spectrometer, this technique can provide a direct readout of the sample content with no sample preparation. In this study, TD-DART-HRMS's utility for establishing spice authenticity was examined.

Hazelnut is a commodity that has gained interest in the food science community concerning its authenticity. The quality of the Italian hazelnuts is guaranteed by Protected Designation of Origin and Protected Geographical Indication certificates. However, due to their modest availability and the high price, fraudulent producers/suppliers blend, or even substitute, Italian hazelnuts with others from different countries, having a lower price, and often a lower quality.

Women at high inherited risk of ovarian cancer are offered risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) from age 35 to 45 years. Although potentially life-saving, RRSO may induce symptoms that negatively affect quality of life and impair long-term health. Clinical care following RRSO is often suboptimal.

Epidemiological evidence indicates that stress and aversive psychological conditions can affect cancer progression, while well-being protects against it. Although a large set of studies have addressed the impact of stress on cancer, not much is known about the mechanisms that protect from cancer in healthy psychological conditions. C57BL/6J mouse pups were exposed to an environmental enrichment condition consisting of being raised until weaning by the biological lactating mother plus a non-lactating virgin female (LnL = Lactating and non-Lactating mothers).

Background: Observational studies have supported the practice of offering minimally invasive interval debulking surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for well-selected patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer. However, there are no prospective randomized data comparing the oncologic efficacy of minimally invasive and open interval debulking surgery in epithelial ovarian cancer.
Primary Objective: The primary objective of this study is to examine whether minimally invasive surgery is non-inferior to laparotomy in terms of disease-free survival in women with advanced stage epithelial ovarian cancer that responded to three or four cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Methods: This is a case-control study.

Methods: We retrospectively compared consecutive patients who underwent curative sublobar resection with patients who underwent lobectomy for cT1-3 N0 M0 peripheral pulmonary typical carcinoid in eight centers between 2000 and 2015.

Background: Minimal knowledge exists regarding the outcome, prognosis and optimal treatment strategy for patients with pulmonary large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC) due to their rarity. We aimed to identify factors affecting survival and recurrence after resection to inform current treatment strategies.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 72 patients who had undergone a curative resection for LCNEC in 8 centers between 2000 and 2015.

Objectives: Typical carcinoids (TCs) are rare, slow-growing neoplasms, usually characterized by satisfactory surgical outcomes. Due to the rarity of TCs, international guidelines for the management of particular clinical presentations currently do not exist. In particular, non-anatomical resections (wedges) are sometimes advocated for Stage 1 TCs because of their indolent behaviour.

Background: The timing of surgical reexploration in microanastomotic thrombosis is directly related to the salvage rate of free flap. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive technique, which allows a continuous bedside monitoring of flap oxygenation. The current literature is lacking in the assessment of variables able to modify the NIRS monitoring.

Introduction: Supermicrosurgical lymphatic-venous anastomosis (LVA) can improve limbs lymphedema. We describe a technique that we employ for preoperative lymphatic mapping of the upper limb (UL), when indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography shows only dermal backflow (DB) and no lymphatic vessel is detectable.
Patients And Methods: Sixteen patients undergoing LVA for unilateral UL lymphedema, showing "stardust" or "diffuse" DB pattern, were included.
