Purpose: Macular Telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel2) is a rare disorder affecting retina's vascular structure and MacTel2-associated full-thickness macular holes (MHs) are extremely rare in general population. Since their management is still controversial, this literature review aims to gather evidences on the surgical management of MacTel2-associated MHs.

Methods: A retrospective review on the Cochrane Central, PubMed, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.

Purpose: To assess the diagnostic capabilities of the most recent chatbots releases, GPT-4o and Gemini Advanced, facing different retinal diseases.

Methods: Exploratory analysis on 50 cases with different surgical (n=27) and medical (n=23) retinal pathologies, whose optical coherence tomography/angiography (OCT/OCTA) scans were dragged into ChatGPT and Gemini's interfaces. Then, we asked "Please describe this image" and classified the diagnosis as: 1) Correct; 2) Partially correct; 3) Wrong; 4) Unable to assess exam type and 5) Diagnosis not given.

Background: The impact of community carriage on the influx of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) into hospitals remains understudied. In this prospective 2-year single-centre study, we investigate the community ESBL-E influx and trace the colonisation, nosocomial acquisition, transmission, and infection dynamics of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-Ec) in non-ICU wards at a tertiary care hospital.

Methods: This study reports primary and post hoc outcomes of the clinical trial NCT01208519 in which hospitalised patients were screened for rectal carriage of ESBL-E.

The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of radiomic features extracted from postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) scans of the lateral cerebral ventricles (LCVs) to provide information on the time since death, or postmortem interval (PMI), a critical aspect of forensic medicine. Periodic PMCT scans, referred to as "sequential scans", were obtained from twelve corpses with known times of death, ranging from 5.5 to 273 h postmortem.

Proteomic Profiling of Pre- and Post-Surgery Saliva of Glioblastoma Patients: A Pilot Investigation.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Istituto di Scienze e Tecnologie Chimiche "Giulio Natta", Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, 00168 Rome, Italy.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an extremely aggressive brain tumor characterized by a high infiltration capability and recurrence rate. Early diagnosis is crucial to improve the prognosis and to personalize the therapeutic approach. This research explored, by LC-MS proteomic analysis after proteolytic digestion, the molecular profile of pre- and post-operative saliva pools from newly diagnosed (ND) GBM patients by comparing different times of collection and tumor recurrence (R).

Objectives: To report the occurrence of the regression of the flow signal from the neovascular network in macular neovascularizations (MNVs), developing in the context of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), treated with faricimab in a treat-and-extend regimen.

Methods: Eyes affected by AMD-related MNV and treated with faricimab intravitreal injections in a treat-and-extend (TE) regimen were consecutively retrospectively screened in five specialized retina centers. Changes in neovascular network characteristics during the course of the treatment were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to investigate the X-chromosome's role in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), which had been overlooked in previous genome-wide association studies.
  • The research included 115,841 AD cases and 613,671 controls, considering different X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) states in females.
  • While no strong genetic risk factors for AD were found on the X-chromosome, seven significant loci were identified, suggesting areas for future research.

Article Synopsis
  • Genetic syndromes have been extensively studied for their clinical signs and underlying mechanisms, but gaps remain in understanding specific aspects like vocal production in conditions such as Cri du chat syndrome (CdCS).
  • A study aimed to analyze the vocal characteristics of 29 CdCS patients aged 4 to 21 by recording their pronunciations of the vowels [a], [i], and [u], as well as counting from 1 to 10.
  • Results showed notable differences in vocal qualities based on age and gender, with older males exhibiting the most pronounced roughness and asthenia, highlighting the link between voice production and biological or clinical traits.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disorder resulting in the loss of α-motor neurons. Nusinersen is an antisense oligonucleotide administered intrathecally to SMA patients that corrects the splicing defect of SMN2. Not all SMA patients respond equally to the therapy and work is in progress to identify biomarkers that may help stratify to SMA patients.

Acromegaly and gigantism are rare diseases, usually caused by a growth hormone-secreting pituitary adenoma, recently renamed GH-secreting pituitary neuroendocrine tumor (GH-PitNET). The transsphenoidal approach is the mainstay of treatment, although a non-negligible number of patients require a multimodal approach with neo-adjuvant or adjuvant medical and radiation therapy. Understanding the clinical complexity of acromegaly and gigantism is essential to improve treatment safety and success.

Representing ECM composition and EMT pathways in gastric cancer using a new metastatic gene signature.

Front Cell Dev Biol

November 2024

Laboratory of Preclinical and Translational Research, Centro di Riferimento Oncologico della Basilicata (IRCCS-CROB), Rionero inVulture, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • - Gastric cancer (GC) is a complex and aggressive type of cancer that starts in the stomach and can spread to other organs, often becoming deadly by stage IV.
  • - The study analyzed gene expression data from 719 patients to identify a specific gene signature linked to the progression from stage I to stage IV GC, focusing on factors like ECM organization and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT).
  • - The findings suggest that this gene signature could help identify stage I patients at higher risk of progression, potentially aiding in early treatment strategies, while also providing a new experimental model to study how gastric cancer spreads.

Introduction: The central biochemical cause of gout is hyperuricemia (elevated serum urate levels). Ultrasound features of monosodium urate (MSU) crystal deposition are common in people with asymptomatic hyperuricemia. However, it is unclear whether this is a precondition for the development of gout.

Avalanche resistive switching is the fundamental process that triggers the sudden change of the electrical properties in solid-state devices under the action of intense electric fields. Despite its relevance for information processing, ultrafast electronics, neuromorphic devices, resistive memories and brain-inspired computation, the nature of the local stochastic fluctuations that drive the formation of metallic regions within the insulating state has remained hidden. Here, using operando X-ray nano-imaging, we have captured the origin of resistive switching in a VO-based device under working conditions.
