Environment and health: Risk perception and its determinants among Italian university students.

Among the determinants of environmental health risk perception, health literacy and social media messages have been generally neglected. This study details the environmental health risk perception and its determinants in Italian university students, including a measure of functional health literacy and an analysis of newspapers and social media. A cross sectional survey was carried out among students from 15 Italian universities and different disciplines (grouped into Scientific-Health and Humanistic-Legal-Social sectors) using a self-administered anonymous questionnaire, divided into six sections: socio-demographic characteristics, information on health and environment, environmental health risk perception, trust, attitudes and behaviors and functional health literacy.

Antibodies to neuronal surface proteins in Tourette Syndrome: Lack of evidence in a European paediatric cohort.

In Tourette Syndrome (TS) a role for autoantibodies directed against neuronal proteins has long been suspected, but so far results are still inconsistent. The aim of this study was to look for antibodies to specific or undefined neuronal proteins that could be involved in the aetiology of the disease. Sera from children with Tourette Syndrome or another chronic tic disorder (TS/TD), collected as part of the longitudinal European Multicenter Tics in Children Study, were investigated.

Ion mobility spectrometry combined with multivariate statistical analysis: revealing the effects of a drug candidate for Alzheimer's disease on Aβ1-40 peptide early assembly.

Inhibition of the initial stages of amyloid-β peptide self-assembly is a key approach in drug development for Alzheimer's disease, in which soluble and highly neurotoxic low molecular weight oligomers are produced and aggregate in the brain over time. Here we report a high-throughput method based on ion mobility mass spectrometry and multivariate statistical analysis to rapidly select statistically significant early-stage species of amyloid-β1-40 whose formation is inhibited by a candidate theranostic agent. Using this method, we have confirmed the inhibition of a Zn-porphyrin-peptide conjugate in the early self-assembly of Aβ40 peptide.

Effect of particulate matter-bound metals exposure on prothrombotic biomarkers: A systematic review.

Environmental pollution is an important modifiable determinant for preventing cardiovascular diseases. Acute exposure to air pollution is linked to severe adverse cardiovascular events, including venous thromboembolism risk. The adverse health effects seem to arise from blood-borne metals and transition metal components from exposure to particulate matter that, when breathed, passes through the lungs into the heart and the blood stream.

Correlations between Malocclusion and Postural Anomalies in Children with Mixed Dentition.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between malocclusion and body posture anomalies. The original sample involved 127 children (45 males and 82 females) with mixed dentition. Clinical examination of oral cavity was performed by an orthodontist, who recorded molar and canine relationship, cross-bite, lower middle-line deviation, and centric relation (CR) considering mono or bilateral contacts in CR.

Litho- and biostratigraphic data of lower-middle Miocene sections in the Transylvanian basin and SE Carpathian Foredeep (Romania).

Litho- and biostratigraphic data are provided of 5 stratigraphic sections in Romania covering the "Badenian" marine flooding that occurred in the Central Paratethys during the middle Miocene (Langhian). The dataset includes stratigraphic logs and descriptions of the profiles, and biostratigraphic analyses on calcareous nannofossils and foraminifera. In addition, characteristic stratigraphic features and representative fossils, including tiny foraminifera in the Campiniţa section in the SE Carpathian Foredeep, are presented in photographs.

(Amaryllidaceae), a new species from Balkans and its relationships with Heldr. & Hausskn. ex Halácsy.

A new species, , is described and illustrated from Albania (Balkan Peninsula). It grows on serpentines or limestone in open rocky stands with a scattered distribution, mainly in mountain locations. Previously, the populations of this geophyte were attributed to Heldr.

Oral and Psychological Alterations in Haemophiliac Patients.

Haemophiliacs are hereditary coagulopathies whose basic anomaly consists of the quantitative or qualitative alteration of one or more plasma proteins in the coagulation system. The objective of this review is to analyse all risk factors, predispositions and alterations to the oral-maxillofacial district in patients with haemophilia. The broader assessment also includes the psychological aspects that could affect the treatment and maintenance of oral conditions.

Surgical Risk on Patients with Coagulopathies: Guidelines on Hemophiliac Patients for Oro-Maxillofacial Surgery.

Background: Haemophilia is a disease of genetic origin, which causes a defect in blood coagulation. Under normal conditions, in the case of leakage from the blood vessels, the blood forms a clot that reduces or blocks the bleeding. This process involves the activation of several plasma proteins in a cascade-like species.

Arteriovenous fistula and pre-surgery mapping: Potential role of physical exercise on endothelial function.

Background: The success of the construction of an arteriovenous fistula for haemodialysis is related to the vascular function of the vessels involved in the anastomosis, with particular reference to radial artery distensibility after reactive hyperaemia test and to the fall of resistance index. Only few studies have evaluated the impact of exercise protocols on the endothelial and morphological characteristics of the vessels of the upper limb with inconclusive results. In this pilot longitudinal study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of a standardized exercise protocol on the haemodynamic and resistive index of the arteries of the upper limb of uraemic patients.

Monitoring the effectiveness of hypothermia in perinatal asphyxia infants by urinary S100B levels.

Background Perinatal asphyxia is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in neonates: The aim of the present study was to investigate, by means of longitudinal assessment of urinary S100B, the effectiveness of hypothermia, in infants complicated by perinatal asphyxia and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Methods We performed a retrospective case-control study in 108 asphyxiated infants, admitted to nine tertiary departments for neonatal intensive care from January 2004 to July 2017, of whom 54 underwent hypothermia treatment and 54 did not. The concentrations of S100B protein in urine were measured using an immunoluminometric assay at first urination and 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 48, 72, 96, 108 and 120 h after birth.

Anderson-Fabry disease (FD) is a rare, progressive, multisystem storage disorder caused by the partial or total deficit of the lysosomal enzyme α-galactosidase A (α-Gal A). It is an X-linked, lysosomal enzymopathy due to mutations in the galactosidase alpha gene (GLA), encoding the α-Gal A. To date, more than 900 mutations in this gene have been described.

Non-destructive evaluation of watermelon seeds germination by using Delayed Luminescence.

The evaluation of optical properties of biological samples is gaining increasing interests both in scientific and commercial fields concerning agriculture and food processing. The optical techniques can indeed be able to provide information on quality assessment in a fast and non-destructive way. This feature makes them suitable for automatic management of control processes.

In oncology, liquid biopsy is used in the detection of next-generation analytes, such as tumor cells, cell-free nucleic acids and exosomes in peripheral blood and other body fluids from cancer patients. It is considered one of the most advanced non-invasive diagnostic systems to enable clinically relevant actions and implement precision medicine. Medical actions include, but are not limited to, early diagnosis, staging, prognosis, anticipation (lead time) and the prediction of therapy responses, as well as follow-up.

The purpose of the present study was to see if there is a correlation between the effect of interferons in crevicular fluid and periodontitis, evaluating literature. Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) is an immunoregulatory cytokine that, when activated by its receptor, plays an important role in the activation of inflammatory processes, which are the basis of periodontal disease. Stem cells in the periodontal ligament, like stem cells from other tissues, have immunomodulatory capacity and are regulated by some cytokines such as interferon-γ (IFN-γ).

Background: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common congenital heart disease, affecting 0.5%-2% of the general population. It is associated not only with notable valvular risk (aortic stenosis and/or regurgitation, endocarditis) but also with aortopathy with a wide spectrum of unpredictable clinical presentations, including aneurysmal dilation of the aortic root and/or ascending thoracic aorta, isthmic coarctation, aortic dissection, or wall rupture.

Exploring the behaviour of water in glycerol solutions by using delayed luminescence.

The crucial role of water in the engine of life have encouraged many researchers in studying, both theoretically and experimentally, the possible "structure" of water. Many properties of water have been related to the interplay between two distinct and interconverting structural species, namely the low-density water (LDW) and the high-density water (HDW). Supported by the results obtained with other aqueous solutions, this paper deals with the possibility of using the ultra-weak delayed luminescence (DL) to investigate water structuring in a mixture with glycerol, characterized only by hydrogen bonds between the various molecules.
