Article Synopsis
  • Obesity is often viewed as a lifestyle choice rather than a disease, leading to initiatives like the IMI SOPHIA project, which aims to better categorize individuals with obesity based on their disease risk and treatment responses.
  • SOPHIA faces challenges due to siloed clinical cohorts, which limit data sharing for biomarker discovery, but tackles this by using a federated database built on open-source DataSHIELD technology that integrates 16 different data sources.
  • The project allows secure analysis of combined data without revealing individual patient information, demonstrated through a proof-of-concept analysis linking BMI and blood pressure, which showed results similar to traditional meta-analyses, setting a standard for safe collaborative research.

Background: Patients provide a unique, irreplaceable, and essential perspective in evaluating patient safety. The suite of Patient Reported Experiences and Outcomes of Safety in Primary Care (PREOS-PC) tools are a notable exception to the scarcity of patient-reported patient safety measures. Full evaluation of their performance has only been attempted for the English version, thereby limiting its international applicability.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) reinfection may hamper HCV elimination in prisons. We aimed to (i) determine the reinfection rate in people treated for HCV in Catalan prisons, (ii) measure reinfection in people entering prisons, and (iii) characterize the molecular epidemiology of HCV in prisons and people who inject drugs (PWID) in the community. Re-HCV was a prospective study in eight prisons (2019-2020) including two groups: (1) people cured with treatment in prison and followed-up every 6 months, and (2) people testing HCV-RNA positive at incarceration.

Risk of partial school closure for COVID-19 by socio-economic level in the period 2020-22.

J Public Health (Oxf)

November 2023

Biomedical Research Consortium in Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP), Madrid E-28029, Spain.

Background: The objective was to analyse the risk of partial school closure by economic level in Barcelona city.

Methods: In this ecological study, the risk of partial school closure for the academic years 2020-21 and 2021-22 was estimated by dividing the total number of days that each child was in quarantine or isolation by the total number of days that each child was at risk to be in quarantine or isolation in the academic year. The association between partial school closure risk and mean income by district was estimated with the Spearman rho.

Article Synopsis
  • A lipidomic analysis using non-targeted LC-MS/MS was performed on post-mortem human brain samples from middle-aged individuals, including those with and without Alzheimer’s disease (AD) symptoms, to identify lipid fingerprints.
  • The study found that white matter (WM) exhibits a unique lipid profile that is more resistant to damage compared to grey matter (GM), displaying lower fatty acid unsaturation and higher ether lipid content.
  • As Alzheimer's disease progresses, significant changes in lipid profiles occur, particularly in the WM, affecting functions related to cell membranes, energy production, antioxidant defense, and bioactive lipids, which may worsen the condition of neurons and glial cells.

Atherosclerosis, Cardiovascular Disease, and COVID-19: A Narrative Review.

Biomedicines

April 2023

Biomedical Research Consortium in Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP), 28029 Madrid, Spain.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory and degenerative process that mainly occurs in large- and medium-sized arteries and is morphologically characterized by asymmetric focal thickenings of the innermost layer of the artery, the intima. This process is the basis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the most common cause of death worldwide. Some studies suggest a bidirectional link between atherosclerosis and the consequent CVD with COVID-19.

Background: Patients with chronic gastrointestinal disease such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), celiac disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), pancreatitis, and chronic liver disease (CLD) often suffer from obesity because of coincidence (IBD, IBS, celiac disease) or related pathophysiology (GERD, pancreatitis and CLD). It is unclear if such patients need a particular diagnostic and treatment that differs from the needs of lean gastrointestinal patients. The present guideline addresses this question according to current knowledge and evidence.

Aging biology entails a cell/tissue deregulated metabolism that affects all levels of biological organization. Therefore, the application of "omic" techniques that are closer to phenotype, such as metabolomics, to the study of the aging process should be a turning point in the definition of cellular processes involved. The main objective of the present study was to describe the changes in plasma metabolome associated with biological aging and the role of sex in the metabolic regulation during aging.

Ether Lipid-Mediated Antioxidant Defense in Alzheimer's Disease.

Antioxidants (Basel)

January 2023

Department of Experimental Medicine, Lleida Biomedical Research Institute (IRBLleida), Lleida University (UdL), E-25198 Lleida, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • * Glycerophospholipids, particularly ether lipids, are crucial for maintaining the structure and function of neural cell membranes, influencing processes like membrane trafficking and cell signaling.
  • * The research explores the important role of ether lipids in brain health, their antioxidant effects, and how changes in their levels are linked to the pathology of sAD, suggesting a vicious cycle that exacerbates the disease.

Lipid Adaptations against Oxidative Challenge in the Healthy Adult Human Brain.

Antioxidants (Basel)

January 2023

Department of Experimental Medicine, Lleida Biomedical Research Institute (IRBLleida), Lleida University (UdL), E-25198 Lleida, Spain.

It is assumed that the human brain is especially susceptible to oxidative stress, based on specific traits such as a higher rate of mitochondrial free radical production, a high content in peroxidizable fatty acids, and a low antioxidant defense. However, it is also evident that human neurons, although they are post-mitotic cells, survive throughout an entire lifetime. Therefore, to reduce or avoid the impact of oxidative stress on neuron functionality and survival, they must have evolved several adaptive mechanisms to cope with the deleterious effects of oxidative stress.

Article Synopsis
  • Dipeptidyl peptidase 9 (DPP9) is linked to activating the NLRP1 inflammasome, which is important in immune responses against viral infections like SARS-CoV-2.
  • Recent studies suggested that DPP9's activity is influenced by oxidative stress, affecting gastrointestinal inflammation and playing a role in lung issues during severe COVID-19.
  • Analysis of biopsies and plasma revealed DPP9 expression is associated with oxidative stress markers and antiviral pathways, leading to potential drug targets for treatment.

August 2022

Biomedical Research Consortium in Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP), 28029 Madrid, Spain.

Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder. The incidence and prevalence of patients with T2DM are increasing worldwide, even reaching epidemic values in most high- and middle-income countries. T2DM could be a risk factor of developing complications in other diseases.

The early detection of symptoms and rapid testing are the basis of an efficient screening strategy to control COVID-19 transmission. The olfactory dysfunction is one of the most prevalent symptom and in many cases is the first symptom. This study aims to develop a machine learning COVID-19 predictive tool based on symptoms and a simple olfactory test, which consists of identifying the smell of an aromatized hydroalcoholic gel.

Objectives: Most errors in laboratory medicine occur in the pre- and post-analytical phases of the total testing process (TTP). In 2014, the Spanish Society of Laboratory Medicine (SEQC) started the current Preanalytical Phase EQA Programme, with the objective of providing a tool for the improvement of the preanalytical phase. The aim of this study was to review the evolution of quality indicators (QI) and the comparability of established performance specifications (PS) with other EQA programmes.
