NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2) proteins play a pivotal role in modulating plant development and offer protection against biotic and abiotic stresses. Until now, no systematic knowledge of NAC family genes is available for the food security crop, sweet potato. Here, a comprehensive genome-wide survey of NAC domain-containing proteins identified 130 and 144 genes with full length sequences in the genomes of two diploid wild relatives of cultivated sweet potato, and , respectively.

Gene expression and translation in plant mitochondria remain poorly understood due to the complicated transcription of its mRNA. In this study, we report the 5' and 3' RNA extremities and promoters of five mitochondrial genes, atp1, atp4, atp6, atp9, and cox3. The results reveal that four genes (atp1, atp4, atp6, and cox3) are transcribed from multiple initiation sites but with a uniform transcript at the 3' end, indicating that heterogeneity of the 5' end is a common feature in the transcription of kenaf mitochondrial genes.

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is a maternally inherited trait used for hybrid production in plants, a novel kenaf CMS line 722HA was derived from the thermo-sensitive male-sterile mutant 'HMS' by recurrent backcrossing with 722HB. The line 722HA has great potential for hybrid breeding in kenaf.
