Background: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in early adults aged 25 to 44 years represents an important and unexpected cause of death. We assessed trends in SCD-related mortality in the United States from 1999 to 2020 among early adults to determine differences by sex, ethnoracial groups, urbanization, and census region.

Methods And Results: Mortality data were retrieved from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) data set from 1999 to 2020.

Bayesian Model Projecting Cardiovascular Disease Related Mortality Trends in the United States.

Background: As future cardiovascular disease mortality trends have public health implications, we aimed to project ischemic heart disease (IHD), cerebrovascular disease (CeVD), and heart failure (HF) mortality rates for adults (40-79 years).

Methods And Results: In this population-level study, we linked the yearly mortality rates (per 100 000 US residents) (2000-2019) with IHD, CeVD, or HF as the primary cause of death from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research with the midyear US population estimates (2000-2035) for adults (40-79 years). We calculated the observed age-standardized mortality rates (2000-2019) (per 100 000 residents) (aSMR) and fitted Bayesian age-period-cohort models to project aSMR for IHD, CeVD, and HF up to 2035 in the United States.

Combined Prognostic Impact of Low Muscle Mass and Hypoalbuminemia in Patients Hospitalized for Heart Failure: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Sarcopenia and hypoalbuminemia have been identified as independent predictors of increased adverse outcomes, including mortality and readmissions, in hospitalized older adults with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). However, the impact of coexisting sarcopenia and hypoalbuminemia on morbidity and death in adults with ADHF has not yet been investigated. Biceps femoris accessory tendon tenodesis: A case report.

Key Clinical Message: We present a case of lateral knee pain from snapping of an accessory tendinous insertion of the biceps femoris. After failure of conservative treatment options, tenodesis of the accessory band to the direct arm insertion at the posterolateral edge of the fibular head effectively resolved symptoms.

Objective: Dysphagia management relies on the evaluation of the temporospatial kinematic events of swallowing performed in videofluoroscopy (VF) by trained clinicians. The upper esophageal sphincter (UES) opening distension represents one of the important kinematic events that contribute to healthy swallowing. Insufficient distension of UES opening can lead to an accumulation of pharyngeal residue and subsequent aspiration which in turn can lead to adverse outcomes such as pneumonia.

Findings of a Novel Barbershop-Based Peripheral Artery Disease Screening Program for Black Men.

Background Peripheral artery disease (PAD) increases the risk of cardiovascular events and limb events including amputations. PAD is twice as prevalent in Black compared with non-Hispanic White individuals, especially among men. Screening for PAD using the ankle-brachial index in community settings, such as the barbershop, could lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment.

Lessons Learned From a Patient-Centered, Team-Based Intervention for Patients With Type 2 Diabetes at High Cardiovascular Risk: Year 1 Results From the CINEMA Program.

Background The care for patients with type 2 diabetes necessitates a multidisciplinary team approach to reduce cardiovascular risk, but implementation of effective integrated strategies has been limited. Methods and Results We conceptualized and initiated a patient-centered, team-based intervention called Center for Integrated and Novel Approaches in Vascular-Metabolic Disease (CINEMA) at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Patients with type 2 diabetes at high risk for cardiovascular events, including those with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, elevated coronary artery calcium score >100, chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, and/or chronic kidney disease stages 2 to 4 were included.

Background Prior studies have shown an association between myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery (MINS) and all-cause mortality in patients following noncardiac surgery. Background Biomarkers of myocardial stress and fibrosis are elevated in people living with HIV and are associated with cardiac dysfunction. It is unknown whether sex influences these markers of heart failure risk in sub-Saharan Africa, where HIV burden is high and where the vast majority of women with HIV live. Background The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic is expected to affect operations and lifestyles of interventional cardiologists around the world in unprecedented ways. Timely gathering of information on this topic can provide valuable insight and improve the handling of the ongoing and future pandemic outbreaks. Methods and Results A survey instrument developed by the authors was disseminated via e-mail, text messaging, WhatsApp, and social media to interventional cardiologists between April 6, 2020, and April 11, 2020.

Statistical and Functional Studies Identify Epistasis of Cardiovascular Risk Genomic Variants From Genome-Wide Association Studies.

Background Epistasis describes how gene-gene interactions affect phenotypes, and could have a profound impact on human diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD). The goal of this study was to identify gene-gene interactions in CAD using an easily generalizable multi-stage approach. Methods and Results Our forward genetic approach consists of multiple steps that combine statistical and functional approaches, and analyze information from global gene expression profiling, functional interactions, and genetic interactions to robustly identify gene-gene interactions.

Autoimmune musicogenic epilepsy associated with anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies and Stiff-person syndrome.

Epilepsy should be suspected in patients with Stiff-person syndrome and new onset paroxysmal episodes. Musicogenic epilepsy may be a manifestation of anti-GAD-Ab spectrum, supporting an autoimmune workup in these patients. Appropriate treatment is not well established, and immunotherapy should be considered in patients with only partial response to antiepileptic drugs.
