Owing to perceived additional costs, patients may avoid integrative health and medicine (IHM) treatments, while insurers may not cover IHM. We hypothesized that adult beneficiaries of a health system's employee insurance plan with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions receiving covered outpatient IHM would have reduced total allowed costs over the 1-year follow-up compared with matched controls, secondarily exploring medical and pharmaceutical cost subsets. We queried medical records and claims spanning 2018-2023 for beneficiaries aged 18-89 years with a new MSK episode.

Efficacy and safety of TAVR versus SAVR in patients with small aortic annuli: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Int J Cardiol

September 2024

Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI, USA; Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine, USA. Electronic address:

Introduction: Patients with a small aortic annulus (SAA) undergoing aortic valve replacement are at increased risk of patient-prosthesis mismatch (PPM), which adversely affects outcomes. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has shown promise in mitigating PPM compared to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR).

Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines to compare clinical outcomes, mortality, and PPM between SAA patients undergoing TAVR and SAVR.

Background: Around 10% of Americans meet the Rome IV criteria for functional dyspepsia (FD), with a significantly higher rate in women. FD also has a higher prevalence in women below the age of 50, suggesting that women who are affected are likely to be of reproductive age. Unfortunately, there is a lack of research or evidence-based guidelines on managing FD in pregnancy.

Article Synopsis
  • Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) was analyzed for its effectiveness in improving outcomes for patients experiencing cardiogenic shock (CS) after cardiac arrest, with a total of 7 studies examined.
  • The study found that TH did not significantly reduce in-hospital, short-term, or mid-term mortality rates compared to standard care (SOC) and showed only a slight improvement in cardiac function.
  • Additionally, TH was associated with potential risks, including higher incidents of infection and bleeding, and did not shorten ICU stays or mechanical ventilation time, suggesting a need for larger studies to explore these findings further.

Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 (CPS1) deficiency is an autosomal recessive urea cycle disorder with varying presentations. Patients with a neonatal-onset phenotype are initially healthy but develop severe hyperammonemia days after birth and often have poor or lethal outcomes, while patients who present later in life may exhibit less severe clinical manifestations. CPS1 deficiency is rarely found on newborn screening because most states do not screen for this disease due to the technical difficulties.

Background And Aim: Multiple computer-aided techniques utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) have been created to improve the detection of polyps during colonoscopy and thereby reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer. While adenoma detection rates (ADR) and polyp detection rates (PDR) are important colonoscopy quality indicators, adenoma miss rates (AMR) may better quantify missed lesions, which can ultimately lead to interval colorectal cancer. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the efficacy of computer-aided colonoscopy (CAC) with respect to AMR, ADR, and PDR in randomized controlled trials.
