Translational Research in Cancer Screening: Long-Term Population-Action Bridges to Diffuse Adherence.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

July 2021

Department of Behavioral Sciences, Ruppin Academic Center, Emeq Hefer 4025000, Israel.

The population-level implementation of innovative, evidence-based medical recommendations for adopting health-behaviors depends on the last link in the translation chain: the users. "User-friendly" medical interventions aimed at engaging users to adopt recommended health behaviors are best developed in a collaborative bio-medical and social sciences setting. In the 1990s, National Breast and Colorectal Cancer Early Detection Programs were launched at the Israeli Department of Community Medicine and Epidemiology.

The recognition of the newborn as a separate patient with special unique needs and rights began relatively late compared to other medical disciplines. This process occurred concomitantly with the development of modern neonatology in the country and the establishment of special care nurseries. The process included organization of skilled teams, standardization of treatment methods, introduction of standardized language and practices, and teamwork optimization.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess various strategies to lower the incidence of early onset GBS sepsis (EOGBS) in newborns in Israel, utilizing a risk allocation model.
  • Results indicated that antepartum screening (APS) and intrapartum prophylaxis (IAP) could significantly decrease EOGBS attack rates, with rapid intrapartum testing enhancing effectiveness further.
  • The conclusion emphasized that combining IAP with postpartum antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) could cut the current EOGBS rates by around 40%, making a selective approach to screening and treatment the most effective method.

Harnessing the Question-Behavior Effect to Enhance Colorectal Cancer Screening in an mHealth Experiment.

Am J Public Health

November 2016

Lea Hagoel, Nili Stein, and Gad Rennert are with the Department of Community Medicine and Epidemiology, Carmel Medical Center and Faculty of Medicine, Technion, Haifa, Israel. Efrat Neter is with the Department of Behavioral Sciences, Ruppin Academic Center, Emeq Hefer, Israel.

Objectives: To assess whether asking questions about a future behavior changes this behavior (i.e., the question-behavior effect) when applied to a population-level intervention to enhance colorectal cancer screening.

Amino acid sensing is an intracellular function that supports nutrient homeostasis, largely through controlled release of amino acids from lysosomal pools. The intracellular pathogen Leishmania resides and proliferates within human macrophage phagolysosomes. Here we describe a new pathway in Leishmania that specifically senses the extracellular levels of arginine, an amino acid that is essential for the parasite.

Background: Early detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) using fecal occult blood test (FOBT) reduces mortality, yet screening adherence remains low.

Purpose: Enhancing FOBT adherence in a field experiment, using Implementation Intentions (II) technique.

Design: Participants were randomly assigned to a standard care group or to II experimental group.

We present a case of a female neonate who had a nonimmune hydrops fetalis and severe hemolytic anemia due to a rare combination of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and congenital dyserythropoietic anemia. We conclude that in severe cases with persistent anemia one should search after delivery for a second reason other than G6PD deficiency alone.

Introduction: Monitoring ventilated infants is difficult during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV). This study tested the possible causes of hypoxemic episodes using a new method for monitoring chest wall movement during HFOV in newborn infants.

Methods: Three miniature motion sensors were attached to both sides of the chest and to the epigastrium to measure the local tidal displacement (TDi) at each site.

Sixty patients who had had revision acetabular components with impaction morselized bone graft were studied in a retrospective, matched-pair analysis. In 30 patients, the morselized graft was derived from cortical bone (group A), and in 30 patients, the graft was derived from cancellous bone (group B). The patients were matched for age, gender, weight, comorbid conditions, Charnley category, severity of bone loss, and allograft preparation.

Fifty patients who had revision femoral components with morselized impacted bone graft were studied in a retrospective, matched-pair analysis. In 25 patients the morselized graft was derived from cortical bone (Group A) and in 25 patients the morselized graft was derived from cancellous bone (Group B). The patients were matched for age, gender, weight, comorbid conditions, severity of bone loss, and allograft preparation.

Purpose: To evaluate the analgesic effect of morphine 1 mg administered into the synovial tissue and the outer third of the meniscus after knee arthroscopy.

Methods: In a prospective, double-blind, randomized study, 60 patients who required elective knee arthroscopy were assigned to two groups: Group A consisted of 30 patients who received a direct injection of morphine 1 mg into either the synovial tissue or the outer third of the meniscus following menisectomy. Group B consisted of 30 patients who received a direct injection of NaCl 0.

Endometrial ablation for the postmenopausal woman.

J Am Assoc Gynecol Laparosc

November 2001

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Carmel Medical Center and Faculty of Medicine, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel.

The postmenopausal woman with abnormal uterine bleeding is considered at risk for developing endometrial neoplasia or one of its precursors. She requires prompt evaluation of the endometrium followed by adequate treatment. In the subgroup of postmenopausal women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the risk of abnormal bleeding is by far higher, is the main reason for discontinuing HRT, and deserves additional attention.
