Background: Predicting the details of how an epidemic evolves is highly valuable as health institutions need to better plan towards limiting the infection propagation effects and optimizing their prediction and response capabilities. Simulation is a cost- and time-effective way of predicting the evolution of the infection as the joint influence of many different factors: interaction patterns, personal characteristics, travel patterns, meteorological conditions, previous vaccination, etc. The work presented in this paper extends EpiGraph, our influenza epidemic simulator, by introducing a meteorological model as a modular component that interacts with the rest of EpiGraph's modules to refine our previous simulation results.

Captioning is the process of transcribing speech and acoustical information into text to help deaf and hard of hearing people accessing to the auditory track of audiovisual media. In addition to the verbal transcription, it includes information such as sound effects, speaker identification, or music tagging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a moxifloxacin-loaded organic-inorganic sol-gel with different antibiotic concentration in the biofilm development and treatment against , , and , cytotoxicity and cell proliferation of MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts; and its efficacy in preventing the prosthetic joint infection (PJI) caused by clinical strains of and using an murine model. Three bacterial strains, ATCC 35984, 15981, and, ATCC 25922, were used for microbiological studies. Thanks to characteristics, such as high force and light weight, a good biocompatibility, noiseless operation and simplicity, and relatively low-cost compared with other conventional actuators, actuators based on shape memory alloy are currently one of the most interesting research topics. They have been introduced in applications such robotics, medicine, automation, and so on. For a good actuator integration of these types of applications, proper control is needed, which seems to be a difficult task due to the hysteresis, dilatory response, and non-linear behavior.

Toroidal metasurface resonances in microwave waveguides.

We theoretically investigate the possibility to load microwave waveguides with dielectric particle arrays that emulate the properties of infinite, two-dimensional, all-dielectric metasurfaces. First, we study the scattering properties and the electric and magnetic multipole modes of dielectric cuboids and identify the conditions for the excitation of the so-called anapole state. Based on the obtained results, we design metasurfaces composed of a square lattice of dielectric cuboids, which exhibit strong toroidal resonances.

Gene editing constitutes a novel approach for precisely correcting disease-causing gene mutations. Frameshift mutations in COL7A1 causing recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa are amenable to open reading frame restoration by non-homologous end joining repair-based approaches. Efficient targeted deletion of faulty COL7A1 exons in polyclonal patient keratinocytes would enable the translation of this therapeutic strategy to the clinic.

The aim of this study was to perform an in vivo histological comparative evaluation of bone formation around titanium (machined and treated surface) and zirconia implants. For the present study were used 50 commercially pure titanium implants grade IV, being that 25 implants with a machined surface (TiM group), 25 implants with a treated surface (TiT group) and, 25 implants were manufactured in pure zirconia (Zr group).
