Natural killer cell-derived extracellular vesicles (NK-EVs) are candidate biotherapeutics against various cancers. However, standardised potency assays are necessary for a reliable assessment of NK-EVs' cytotoxicity. This study aims to thoroughly evaluate a highly sensitive resazurin phenoxazine-based cell viability potency assay (measurement of the cellular redox metabolism) for quantifying the cytotoxicity of NK-EVs against leukaemia K562 cells (suspension model) and breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells (adherent model) in vitro.

Background: High-income countries offer social assistance (welfare) programs to help alleviate poverty for people with little or no income. These programs have become increasingly conditional and stringent in recent decades based on the premise that transitioning people from government support to paid work will improve their circumstances. However, many people end up with low-paying and precarious jobs that may cause more poverty because they lose benefits such as housing subsidies and health and dental insurance, while incurring job-related expenses.

Annual antler growth begins in the spring and is completed by late summer for male caribou () from the Qamanirjuaq herd (Nunavut, Canada), aligned with both the spring migration and a seasonal dietary shift. Antlers may provide a non-lethal means of studying short- and long-term changes in caribou ecology through incorporated isotopes of carbon (δC) and nitrogen (δN). We sampled the antlers of 12 male caribou from the Qamanirjuaq herd culled in September 1967.

Canadian patients and families affected by rare genetic lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) suffer from numerous challenges related to disease management, including issues navigating healthcare and social support services, access to orphan drugs, and intensive treatment regimens. These challenges significantly impact people's quality of life, yet they remain obscure and have not been the subject of comprehensive analysis. Thus, we conducted qualitative interviews with Canadian patients and caregivers living with LSDs to advance current understanding of their experiences with rare-disease (RD) management and health systems navigation to support patient-focused RD policies and programs and improve the health outcomes of the 2.

Mating systems in angiosperms range from obligate outcrossing to highly self-fertilizing. The belief that obligate selfing does not exist is contradicted by genetic evidence in several populations of , in which selfing is enforced by the anthers enclosing the style. However, whether the mating systems of these populations are typical, or an extreme across the species range is unknown.

Background And Aims: Access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene is a fundamental human right and essential to control infectious diseases. However, many countries, including Ethiopia, do not have adequate data to report on basic water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. Although contaminated drinking water spreads diseases like cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, and dysentery, studies on drinking water contamination risk levels in households are limited in Ethiopia.

Nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO) is a widely used nanomaterial found in several industrial and consumer products, including surface coatings, paints, sunscreens and cosmetics, among others. Studies have linked gestational exposure to nano-TiO with negative maternal and fetal health outcomes. For example, maternal pulmonary exposure to nano-TiO during gestation has been associated not only with maternal, but also fetal microvascular dysfunction in a rat model.

Background And Aims: Mental health institutions and community organizations have had difficulty recruiting patients and caregivers onto their Patient, Family, and Community Advisory Committees (PFACs). Previous research has focused on barriers and enablers of engaging patients and caregivers who have advisory experience. This study acknowledges the experiential difference between patients and caregivers by focusing only on caregivers; further, we compare the barriers and enablers between advising versus non-advising caregivers of loved ones with mental illness.

Climate-related range shifts in Arctic-breeding shorebirds.

Ecol Evol

February 2023

Wildlife Research Division Environment and Climate Change Canada Ottawa Ontario Canada.

Aim: To test whether the occupancy of shorebirds has changed in the eastern Canadian Arctic, and whether these changes could indicate that shorebird distributions are shifting in response to long-term climate change.

Location: Foxe Basin and Rasmussen Lowlands, Nunavut, Canada.

Methods: We used a unique set of observations, made 25 years apart, using general linear models to test if there was a relationship between changes in shorebird species' occupancy and their species temperature Index, a simple version of a species climate envelope.

Environmental variables are often the primary drivers of species' distributions as they define their niche. However, individuals, or groups of individuals, may sometimes adopt a limited range within this larger suitable habitat as a result of social and cultural processes. This is the case for Eastern Caribbean sperm whales.

Neotropical countries receive financing and effort from temperate nations to aid the conservation of migratory species that move between temperate and tropical regions. If allocated strategically, these resources could simultaneously contribute to other conservation initiatives. In this study, we use novel distribution maps to show how those resources could aid planning for the recovery of threatened resident vertebrates.
