The causes of population divergence in vagile groups remain a paradox in evolutionary biology: dispersive species should be able to colonize new areas, a prerequisite for allopatric speciation, but dispersal also facilitates gene flow, which erodes population differentiation. Strong dispersal ability has been suggested to enhance divergence in patchy habitats and inhibit divergence in continuous landscapes, but empirical support for this hypothesis is lacking. Here we compared patterns of population divergence in a dispersive clade of swallows distributed across both patchy and continuous habitats.

Identifying and planning treatment for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) using telemedicine is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, necessitating a grading system to help caretakers of at-risk infants gauge disease severity. The modified ROP Activity Scale (mROP-ActS) factors zone, stage, and plus disease into its scoring system, addressing the need for assessing ROP's totality of binocular burden via indirect ophthalmoscopy. However, there is an unmet need for an alternative score which could facilitate ROP identification and gauge disease improvement or deterioration specifically on photographic telemedicine exams.

Abundance surveys are commonly used to estimate plant or animal densities and frequently require estimating detection probabilities to account for imperfect detection. The estimation of detection probabilities requires additional measurements that take time, potentially reducing the efficiency of the survey when applied to high-density populations. We conducted quadrat, removal, and distance surveys of zebra mussels () in three central Minnesota lakes and determined how much survey effort would be required to achieve a pre-specified level of precision for each abundance estimator, allowing us to directly compare survey design efficiencies across a range of conditions.

Logical inference is often assumed a human-unique ability, although many species of apes and monkeys have shown some facility within a two-cup task in which one cup is baited, the primate is shown the cup which is empty (an exclusion cue), and subsequently chooses the other baited cup. In published reports, New World monkey species show a limited ability to choose successfully, often with half or more of the subjects tested not showing the ability with auditory cues or with exclusion cues. In this study, five cotton-top tamarins () were tested in a two-cup task with visual or auditory cues which revealed the presence or absence of bait, and in a second study, were tested with a four-cup array using a variety of walls to define the baiting space and a variety of visual cues including inclusion and exclusion.

Purpose: We established the most commonly used clinician and patient-reported hip fracture outcome measures as of 2022, assessed their content validity using an International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework, and operationalized these results to contribute to an updated hip fracture core set.

Materials And Methods: A literature search was conducted to identify articles utilizing outcome measures related to hip fracture. A total of five outcome measures were identified, linked to the ICF, and assessed for content validity via bandwidth percent, content density, and content diversity.

Purpose: To quantify and compare the magnitude and type of neurocognitive dysfunction in at-risk children with central nervous system (CNS) tumors, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and sickle cell disease (SCD) using a common instrument and metric to directly compare these groups with each other.

Methods: Fifty-three participants between the ages of 7 and 12 years (n = 27 ALL, n = 11 CNS tumor, n = 15 SCD) were enrolled and assessed using the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery (NIHTCB). Participants with ALL or CNS tumor were 0-18 months posttherapy, while participants with SCD possessed the SS or Sβ genotype, took hydroxyurea, and had no known history of stroke.

The interaction between the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral immune system is key for brain function in homeostasis and disease. Recent studies have revealed that the C-C chemokine receptor 7 (CCR7) is expressed in both CNS resident cells and peripheral immune cells, and plays an important role in regulating behavior in homeostasis and neuroinflammation in disease. This review integrates studies examining the role of CCR7 in CNS resident and peripheral immune cells in homeostasis and disease, as well as the pathways of peripheral immune cell migration in and out of the brain via CCR7.

The US state of Georgia includes the range of several periodical cicada broods and is the southernmost state in which Brood X periodical cicadas emerge; however, no research has focused on this brood in this state. We used reports of sightings on social media, communication with the public, and our own searches to determine the geographic range in Georgia and timing of biological events. Both adults and exuviae were identified to species to determine the species makeup at those locations.

Purpose: The ongoing replication crisis within and beyond psychology has revealed the numerous ways in which flexibility in the research process can affect study outcomes. In speech research, examples of these "researcher degrees of freedom" include the particular syllables, words, or sentences presented; the talkers who produce the stimuli and the instructions given to them; the population tested; whether and how stimuli are matched on amplitude; the type of masking noise used and its presentation level; and many others. In this research note, we argue that even seemingly minor methodological choices have the potential to affect study outcomes.

In contrast to guidelines published in 2007, macrolide monotherapy for outpatients was made a conditional recommendation based on resistance levels. Local knowledge of current antimicrobial susceptibility is needed to guide management of CAP and other bacterial respiratory pathogens.

Background: Some patients who initially fail epilepsy surgery later become seizure-free, but it is not clear how the clinical characteristics of the patients or post-operative modifications of anti-seizure medication (ASM) regimens contribute to late seizure remission.

Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients undergoing epilepsy surgery at the University of Washington Regional Epilepsy Center between 2007 and 2017, including patients receiving neocortical resection, temporal lobectomy, and hippocampal laser interstitial therapy (LITT) ablation. We assessed seizure freedom, ASM changes, seizure frequency at the first and last follow-up, and type of lesion.
