Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) can be combined with organic semiconductors to form hybrid van der Waals heterostructures. Specially, non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) stand out due to their excellent absorption and exciton diffusion properties. Here, we couple monolayer tungsten diselenide (ML-WSe) with two well performing NFAs, ITIC, and IT-4F (fluorinated ITIC) to achieve hybrid architectures.

CFD simulation of turbulent mass transfer of HS and O in a stirring tank.

Water Sci Technol

January 2025

Chair of Water Resources Management and Modeling of Hydrosystems, Technische Universität Berlin, Gustav-Meyer-Allee 25, Berlin 13355, Germany.

This study explores the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of oxygen (O) and hydrogen sulfide (HS) mass transfer in a highly turbulent stirring tank. Using the open-source software OpenFOAM, we extended three-dimensional two-phase flow solvers with a rotating mesh feature to model the mass transfer processes between the water and air phases. The accuracy of these simulations was validated against experimental data, demonstrating a strong agreement in the mass transfer rates of HS and O.

Treatment of patients with tumor/treatment-related hypothalamic obesity in the first two years following surgical treatment or radiotherapy.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, University Children's Hospital, Carl Von Ossietzky Universität, Klinikum Oldenburg AöR, Rahel-Straus-Straße 10, 26133, Oldenburg, Germany.

Survivors of sellar/suprasellar tumors involving hypothalamic structures face a risk of impaired quality of life, including tumor- and/or treatment-related hypothalamic obesity (TTR-HO) defined as abnormal weight gain resulting in severe persistent obesity due to physical, tumor- and/or treatment related damage of the hypothalamus. We analyze German claims data to better understand treatment pathways for patients living TTR-HO during the two years following the index surgical treatment. A database algorithm identified patients with TTR-HO in a representative German payer claims database between 2010 and 2021 (n = 5.

Background: The increasing bureaucratic burden in everyday clinical practice impairs doctor-patient communication (DPC). Effective use of digital technologies, such as automated semantic speech recognition (ASR) with automated extraction of diagnostically relevant information can provide a solution.

Objective: The aim was to determine the extent to which ASR in conjunction with semantic information extraction for automated documentation of the doctor-patient dialogue (ADAPI) can be integrated into everyday clinical practice using the IVI routine as an example and whether patient care can be improved through process optimization.

Hydrothermal vents are ecosystems inhabited by a highly specialized fauna. To date, more than 30 gastropod species have been recorded from vent fields along the Central and Southeast Indian Ridge and all of them are assumed to be vent-endemic. During the INDEX project, 701 representatives of the genus Anatoma (Mollusca: Vetigastropoda) were sampled from six abyssal hydrothermal vent fields.

Magnetoreception, the ability to sense magnetic fields, is widespread in animals but remains poorly understood. The leading model links this ability in migratory birds to the photo-activation of the protein cryptochrome. Magnetic information is thought to induce structural changes in cryptochrome via a transient radical pair intermediate.

Pneumatic conveying inkjet bioprinting for the processing of living cells.

Biofabrication

January 2025

Research Group Anatomy, School for Medicine and Health Science, Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, Carl von Ossietzky Str.9-11, Oldenburg, 26129, GERMANY.

Inkjet printing techniques are often used for bioprinting purposes because of their excellent printing characteristics, such as high cell viability and low apoptotic rate, contactless modus operandi, commercial availability, and low cost. However, they face some disadvantages, such as the use of bioinks of low viscosity, cell damage due to shear stress caused by drop ejection and jetting velocity, as well as a narrow range of available bioinks that still challenge the inkjet printing technology. New technological solutions are required to overcome these obstacles.

Music pre-processing methods are currently becoming a recognized area of research with the goal of making music more accessible to listeners with a hearing impairment. Our previous study showed that hearing-impaired listeners preferred spectrally manipulated multi-track mixes. Nevertheless, the acoustical basis of mixing for hearing-impaired listeners remains poorly understood.

High-recombining genomic regions affect demography inference based on ancestral recombination graphs.

Genetics

January 2025

Max Planck Research Group Behavioural Genomics, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, August-Thienemann-Straße 2, 24306 Plön, Germany.

Multiple methods of demography inference are based on the ancestral recombination graph. This powerful approach uses observed mutations to model local genealogies changing along chromosomes by historical recombination events. However, inference of underlying genealogies is difficult in regions with high recombination rate relative to mutation rate due to the lack of mutations representing genealogies.

Deciphering compromised speech-in-noise intelligibility in older listeners: the role of cochlear synaptopathy.

eNeuro

January 2025

Hearing Technology @ WAVES, Department of Information Technology, Ghent University, Technologiepark 216, 9052 Zwijnaarde, Belgium

Speech intelligibility declines with age and sensorineural hearing damage (SNHL). However, it remains unclear whether cochlear synaptopathy (CS), a recently discovered form of SNHL, significantly contributes to this issue. CS refers to damaged auditory-nerve synapses that innervate the inner hair cells and there is currently no go-to diagnostic test available.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) offers a non-invasive method to enhance noradrenergic neurotransmission in the human brain, thereby increasing cognitive control. Here, we investigate if changes in cognitive control induced by tVNS are mediated through locus coeruleus-induced modifications of neural activity in the anterior cingulate cortex. Young healthy participants engaged in a simple cognitive control task focusing on response inhibition and a more complex task that involved both response inhibition and working memory, inside a magnetic resonance imaging scanner.

This case study of Kongsfjorden, western coastal Svalbard, provides insights on how freshwater runoff from marine- and land-terminating glaciers influences the biogeochemical cycles and distribution patterns of carbon, nutrients, and trace elements in an Arctic fjord system. We collected samples from the water column at stations along the fjord axis and proglacial river catchments, and analyzed concentrations of dissolved trace elements, together with dissolved nutrients, as well as alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon. Statistical tools were applied to identify and quantify biogeochemical processes within the fjord that govern the constituent distributions.

Purpose: The self-shielding radiosurgery system ZAP-X consists of a 3 MV linear accelerator and eight round collimators. For this system, it is a common practice to perform the reference dosimetry using the largest 25 mm diameter collimator at a source-to-axis distance (SAD) of 45 cm with the PTW Semiflex3D chamber placed at a measurement depth of 7 mm in water. Existing dosimetry protocols do not provide correction for these measurement conditions.
