Background: There is only partial overlap in the genetic background of isolated rapid-eye-movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) and Parkinson's disease (PD).

Objective: To examine the role of autosomal dominant and recessive PD or atypical parkinsonism genes in the risk of iRBD.

Methods: Ten genes, comprising the recessive genes PRKN, DJ-1 (PARK7), PINK1, VPS13C, ATP13A2, FBXO7, and PLA2G6 and the dominant genes LRRK2, GCH1, and VPS35, were fully sequenced in 1039 iRBD patients and 1852 controls of European ancestry, followed by association tests.

Objective: The main objective was to compare clinical features, disease course, and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody (Ab) dynamics between children and adults with MOG-Ab-associated disease (MOGAD).

Methods: This retrospective multicentric, national study included 98 children and 268 adults with MOGAD between January 2014 and September 2019. Cox regression model for recurrent time-to-event data and Kaplan-Meier curves for time to antibody negativity were performed for the objectives.

Objective: Three of four patients with infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm are now treated with endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). The incidence of secondary procedures and surgical conversions is increasing for a population theoretically unfit for open surgery. The indications and outcomes of late open surgical conversions after EVAR in a high-volume tertiary vascular unit are reported.

SMPD1 variants do not have a major role in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

Neurobiol Aging

September 2020

Department of Human Genetics, McGill University, Montréal, Quebec, Canada; Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, Montréal, Quebec, Canada; Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, McGill University, Montréal, Quebec, Canada. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Mutations in the SMPD1 gene have been linked to Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.
  • The study analyzed SMPD1 variants in 959 patients with isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) compared to 1287 control subjects.
  • Findings show no significant association between SMPD1 variants and iRBD, suggesting SMPD1 is unlikely to be a key factor in this disorder.

Objective: In premature neonates, bloody stools and/or abdominal distension with feeding intolerance may be inaugural signs of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). We assessed the ability of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to distinguish those neonates with NEC soon after the occurrence of these symptoms.

Study Design: We prospectively collected NIRS measurements of abdominal and cerebral regional tissue oxygen saturation (r-SO), with values masked by an opaque cover.

Background: The relationships between digestive bacterial translocation, uremic toxins, oxidative stress and microinflammation in a population of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients without metabolic nor inflammatory disease are unknown.

Methods: Bacterial translocation, uremic toxins, oxidative stress, and inflammation were assessed by measuring plasma levels of 16S  ribosomal DNA (16S rDNA), p-cresyl sulfate (PCS), indoxyl sulfate (IS), indole acetic acid (IAA), F2-isoprostanes, hsCRP and receptor I of TNFα (RITNFα) in patients without metabolic nor inflammatory disease. 44 patients with CKD from stage IIIB to V and 14 controls with normal kidney function were included from the nephrology outpatients.

Reference Values for Abdominal Circumference in Premature Infants.

Front Pediatr

February 2020

Department of Neonatal Medicine, Arnaud de Villeneuve Hospital, Montpellier University Hospital Center, Montpellier, France.

Abdominal distention is a common indicator of feeding intolerance in premature newborns. In the absence of a precise definition, abdominal distention and its degree are highly subjective. The aim of this study was to construct references and smoothed percentiles for abdominal circumference (AC) and AC to head circumference (HC) ratio (AC/HC) in infants born between 24 weeks and 34 weeks of gestational age.

Objective: Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a prodromal synucleinopathy, as >80% will eventually convert to overt synucleinopathy. We performed an in-depth analysis of the SNCA locus to identify RBD-specific risk variants.

Methods: Full sequencing and genotyping of SNCA was performed in isolated/idiopathic RBD (iRBD, n = 1,076), Parkinson disease (PD, n = 1,013), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB, n = 415), and control subjects (n = 6,155).

Cell-free transcription-translation systems have great potential for biosensing, yet the range of detectable chemicals is limited. Here we provide a workflow to expand the range of molecules detectable by cell-free biosensors through combining synthetic metabolic cascades with transcription factor-based networks. These hybrid cell-free biosensors have a fast response time, strong signal response, and a high dynamic range.

Background: Several studies have suggested that the level of pancreatic division during distal pancreatectomy (DP) has an impact on postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) occurrence. The purpose of this study was thus to investigate the level of pancreatic division as a potential risk factor for POPF after DP for non-pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma lesions (non-PDAC) in the era of parenchyma-sparing resection.

Methods: Data from 217 patients requiring DP were collected in a prospectively maintained database from January 1997 to December 2017 and analyzed retrospectively.

Introduction: Pregnancies in women with lupus nephritis are at high-risk of complications, while scarcity of scientific knowledge on prognostic factors impedes a fair medical counseling. We aimed to identify determinants associated with maternal and fetal complications.

Materials: We retrospectively reviewed medical charts of pregnancies that lasted more than 22 weeks in 66 patients with pre-existing lupus nephritis between 2004 and 2013 in France.

Background: Extrapyramidal side effects (EPS) have been identified as a complication of antipsychotic treatment. Previous meta-analyses have investigated EPS prevalence and risk factors in randomized clinical trials with highly selected patients, but studies in real-world schizophrenia are missing.

Objective: To examine the prevalence and clinical correlates associated with EPS in a nonselected national multicenter sample of stabilized patients with schizophrenia.

Background: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in association with intravenous thrombolysis is recommended for treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), with large vessel occlusion (LVO) in the anterior circulation. Because MT is only available in comprehensive stroke centers (CSC), the challenge of stroke organization is to ensure equitable access to the fastest endovascular suite. Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of MT in patients initially managed in 1 CSC (mothership), compared with patients first managed in primary stroke center (PSC), and then transferred to the CSC for MT (drip-and-ship).
