Background: effectiveness of single disease management programs (DMP) in general practice may be limited for patients with low socioeconomic status (SES), as DMPs insufficiently take into account the specific problems and needs of this population. A Person-Centred Integrated Care (PC-IC) approach focusing on patient's needs could address these problems.

Aim: to explore experiences of patients with (multiple) chronic diseases with regard to the acceptability of a general practice-based PC-IC approach, with a focus on patients with low SES, and to establish which modifications are needed to tailor the approach to this group.

Background: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are established structural imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease. The pathophysiologic condition of brain tissue varies over the core, the vicinity, and the subtypes of WMH and cannot be interpreted from conventional magnetic resonance imaging. We aim to improve our pathophysiologic understanding of WMHs and the adjacently injured normal-appearing white matter in terms of microstructural and microvascular alterations using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging in patients with sporadic and genetic cerebral small vessel disease.

Raw photoplethysmogram waveforms versus peak-to-peak intervals for machine learning detection of atrial fibrillation: Does waveform matter?

Comput Methods Programs Biomed

November 2024

Laboratory of Cardiac Physiology, Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark; Department of Internal Medicine, Eifelklinik St. Brigida GmbH & CO KG., Simmerath, Germany.

Background: Machine learning-based analysis can accurately detect atrial fibrillation (AF) from photoplethysmograms (PPGs), however the computational requirements for analyzing raw PPG waveforms can be significant. The analysis of PPG-derived peak-to-peak intervals may offer a more feasible solution for smartphone deployment, provided the diagnostic utility is comparable.

Aims: To compare raw PPG waveforms and PPG-derived peak-to-peak intervals as input signals for machine learning detection of AF.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how socioeconomic position (SEP), food environments, walkability, and greenspace impact type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk, focusing on their interconnection.
  • Lower SEP correlates with a higher risk of T2D, with significant hazard ratios indicating a strong link between education, income, occupation, and diabetes prevalence.
  • Environmental factors only weakly mediate the relationship between SEP and T2D, suggesting that while lower SEP leads to a less healthy environment, this isn't the primary driver for increased diabetes risk.
