Making the Invisible, Visible: An Exploration of Track-and-Field Coaches' Perspectives of Their Planning Processes.

Int J Sports Physiol Perform

November 2024

Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, Northumbria University, Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom.

Purpose: The traditional understanding of how coaches plan for sporting performance is rooted in the assumption that coaches create periodized plans underpinned by physiological principles, thereby providing scientific credibility to their work. In contrast, there remains a paucity of literature exploring how coaches understand or think about their planning practices. The purpose of this study was to generate new knowledge regarding what information coaches actually consider within their planning processes and how they actually approach the task of planning.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different volumes of aerobic training (AT) and resistance training (RT) during a concurrent exercise training program on selected indicators of physical fitness and pulmonary function in women with spinal cord injury (SCI).

Methods: Twenty-three inactive females with complete or incomplete SCI from T6 to L5 were divided into three groups: concurrent training with a focus on AT (CTAT; two weekly sessions of AT and one of RT), concurrent training with a focus on RT (CTRT; two weekly sessions of RT and one of AT), and control (CON). Tests were performed before and after an 8-week experimental period for indicators of pulmonary function, aerobic power, endurance performance, muscular strength and endurance, speed, and change of direction.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compared three-dimensional motion capture and vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) methods for identifying dumbbell release points during countermovement jumps with added load.
  • There was significant variability in results between methods at both 20% and 30% body mass, showing wide limits of agreement in timing the release of dumbbells.
  • The vGRF analysis, particularly the method adjusted at the release point (DR), demonstrated greater reliability in variables, while a mix of forward and backward integration analyses was recommended for a better understanding of jump dynamics.

Background: It is difficult to recognize vitamin B12 deficiency and to evaluate the effect of B12 treatment due to a broad range of variable clinical symptoms overlapping with other diseases and diagnostic biomarkers that quickly normalize during treatment. This poses a risk of delay in diagnosis and a challenge to uniformly monitor the effect of B12 treatment. There is a need for a new clinical outcome measure suitable for clinical practice and clinical evaluation studies.

A Systematic Review of Symptoms of Pernicious Anemia.

Food Nutr Bull

June 2024

Health Psychology in Pharmacy Practice, Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.

Background: Pernicious anemia (PA) is a type of macrocytic anemia caused by autoimmune gastritis. To facilitate timely diagnosis and treatment of PA there is a pressing need for improved understanding among Healthcare providers of the condition's symptoms and diagnostic criteria.

Objective: This systematic review aims to extend existing clinical knowledge on the presentation of PA by determining which symptoms and clinical complications are reported in published adult case studies.

Pregnancy and childbirth involve substantial physical, physiological and psychological changes. As such, postpartum rugby players should be supported and appropriately prepared to return to the demands of rugby alongside the additional demands of motherhood. This review aims to discuss specific perinatal considerations that inform a rugby player's readiness to return-to-sport postpartum and present an approach to rehabilitation.

Post-exercise hot (HWI) and cold (CWI) water immersion are popular strategies used by athletes in a range of sporting contexts, such as enhancing recovery or adaptation. However, prolonged heating bouts increase neuroendocrine responses that are associated with perceptions of fatigue. Fourteen endurance-trained runners performed three trials consisting of two 45-min runs at 95% lactate threshold on a treadmill separated by 6 h of recovery.

Background: Previous research into outcomes after treatment in medium secure psychiatric hospitals has mostly relied on pre-millennium data.

Aims: To examine patient and inpatient service-related factors associated with readmission within 2 years following discharge to the community or open conditions from conditions of medium security.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of 137 patients discharged either to the community or to open conditions from one 64-bed South Wales Regional Medium Secure Hospital Unit between July 1999 and November 2017 was completed using data from healthcare records to document demographics, diagnosis and nature of index offences together with researcher-completed ratings of inpatient progress using the Dangerousness Understanding Recovery and Urgency Manual (DUNDRUM) Programme Completion and DUNDRUM Recovery scales.

Left ventricular trabeculation in Hominidae: divergence of the human cardiac phenotype.

Commun Biol

June 2024

Centre for Heart, Lung and Vascular Health, School of Health and Exercise Sciences, University of British Columbia, Kelowna, BC, V1V 1V7, Canada.

Although the gross morphology of the heart is conserved across mammals, subtle interspecific variations exist in the cardiac phenotype, which may reflect evolutionary divergence among closely-related species. Here, we compare the left ventricle (LV) across all extant members of the Hominidae taxon, using 2D echocardiography, to gain insight into the evolution of the human heart. We present compelling evidence that the human LV has diverged away from a more trabeculated phenotype present in all other great apes, towards a ventricular wall with proportionally greater compact myocardium, which was corroborated by post-mortem chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) hearts.

Assessment of player's postural control following a lower limb injury is of interest to sports medicine practitioners due to its fundamental role in daily tasks and sporting activities. The aim was to longitudinally monitor professional rugby union players' postural control during each phase of the rehabilitation program (acute, middle, and late) following a lower limb injury. Seven male rugby union players (height 1.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic exercise training in youths promotes a "youth athlete's artery" phenotype, enhancing arterial function compared to untrained peers.
  • The study assessed 102 youths' brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and found that exercise-trained individuals had larger artery diameters and better FMD scores than untrained counterparts.
  • Results indicate that while exercise positively influences arterial health, this effect is more pronounced in later adolescence, particularly when cardiorespiratory fitness is elevated.

Independently, both prolonged uninterrupted sitting and the onset of menopause negatively impact markers of cardiovascular risk. Whether their combination augment these responses additively remains unknown. This study assessed whether prolonged uninterrupted sitting causes greater central and peripheral cardiovascular dysfunction in post-menopausal women compared to pre-menopausal women.

The effects of coaches' pride and shame expressions on field hockey players' emotions and performance.

Psychol Sport Exerc

September 2024

Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cyncoed Road, Cardiff, CF23, 6XD, UK.

In this study, we examined the effects of female coaches' nonverbal pride and shame expressions on female field hockey players' emotions and performance and considered the role of two potential moderating factors. Across two experiments, a between (emotional expression manipulation) within (pre- and post-manipulation) subjects design was employed. A female hockey coach was scripted to deliver performance feedback randomly displaying pride or shame to skilled players (Experiment 1, n = 38; Experiment 2, n = 44) after they had performed a passing test.

Until now, research on growth following sport injury has relied exclusively on retrospective reports and nomothetic measures drawn from other fields of research. Therefore, to more objectively explore growth following sport injury pre- and post-injury, rather than retrospectively, this study adapts and examines the psychometric properties of the Athlete Psychological Well-Being Inventory (APWBI), which can be used throughout the sport injury process (i.e.
