Epilepsy Behav

November 2010

Beijing Comprehensive Epilepsy Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Beijing Institute of Functional Neurosurgery, Department of Functional Neurosurgery, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital University of Medical Sciences, Beijing, China.

Objective: The goal of this study was to summarize the results of language cortex mapping using electrical cortical stimulation with modified language tasks for Mandarin-speaking patients with epilepsy.

Methods: Electrical currents were delivered through implanted subdural electrodes to six Mandarin-speaking patients before epilepsy surgery. The current intensities inducing any language disturbance during comprehension, repetition, and speech tasks were recorded, and individual cortical mapping was completed to guide subsequent resection, with the distance between mapped language sites and resected zones kept at a minimum of 0.

E-selectin gene polymorphisms are associated with essential hypertension: a case-control pilot study in a Chinese population.

BMC Med Genet

August 2010

Department of Hypertension, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Attached to Capital University of Medical Sciences, Beijing Institute of Heart, Lung, Blood Vessel Diseases, Beijing, 100029, China.

Background: Genetic variation is thought to contribute to the etiology of hypertension, and E-selectin is a candidate essential hypertension-associated gene. This study thus sought to investigate possible genetic associations between the T1880C, C602A and T1559C polymorphisms of E-selectin and essential hypertension.

Methods: Hypertensive patients (n = 490) and healthy normotensive subjects (n = 495) were screened for the genotypes T1880C, C602A and T1559C using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction after DNA extraction to identify representative variations in the E-selectin gene.

Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to assess how the disruption of the internal iliac artery impacts blood flow and erectile function in patients who underwent renal transplantation.
  • The research involved 33 chronic renal failure patients, measuring erectile function and penile blood flow before and after their transplant.
  • Findings indicated that while blood flow decreased post-surgery, it did not significantly affect erectile function, with many patients reporting unchanged or improved sexual desire following their transplant.

Role of endothelial lipase in atherosclerosis.

Transl Res

July 2010

Emergency Center of Heart, Lung and Blood Vessel Diseases, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital University of Medical Sciences & Beijing Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood Vessel Diseases, Beijing 100029, P. R. China.

Endothelial lipase, which is a newly identified member of the lipase family, plays an important role in high-density lipoprotein metabolism, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of high-density lipoprotein phospholipids and facilitates the clearance of high-density lipoprotein from the circulation. In addition, inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta), upregulate endothelial lipase expression, and endothelial lipase also affects the expression of cytokines, which in turn play an important role in atherogenesis. Endothelial lipase expression has been associated with macrophages within human atherosclerotic lesions.

Microanatomic study of the vascular and duct system of the submandibular gland.

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

April 2011

Department of Stomatology, Affiliated Beijing, Tong Ren Hospital, Capital University of Medical Science, Beijing, China.

Purpose: Autologous microvascular submandibular gland (SMG) transfer is an effective treatment for severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). However, epiphora (excessive tear secretion) may occur after the successful transfer of whole submandibular gland because tear secretion level is closely related to the size of the transferred gland. The aim of this study was to investigate the microanatomy of SMG to explore the possibility of partial SMG transfer to prevent postoperative epiphora.

Zhongguo Shi Yan Xue Ye Xue Za Zhi

June 2010

Center of heamatological Diseases, Beijing Chlidren's Hospital, Capital University of Medical Science, Beijng 100045, China.

To investigate whether the RBC lysing solution can affect the results of relative enumeration of CD34(+) cells, 37 mobile peripheral blood apheresis products were stained using CD34-PE and CD45-FITC monoclone antibodies and RBCs were then lysed by two lysing solution commercially available (one named FACS Lysing Solution, FACS; another IOTest 3 Lysing Solution, IOTest) and one lysing solution self-prepared. After being processed by lyse-and-then-washed method, samples were detected by FACSC anto flow cytometer. The percentages of CD34(+) cells were determined based on ISHAGE gating strategy, forward and side scatter (FSC and SSC) characteristics, percentage of CD45(+) cells were recorded simultaneously.

Objective: To investigate the effect of Chinese herbs for nourishing Shen-yin and removing Xiang-fire (NYRF) on estrogen receptor (ER) expression in uterus and ovary of rats contaminated with nonylphenol (NP) or its bisphenol A (BPA) mixture, for exploring the action mechanism of NYRF in antagonizing the estrogen-mimetic activity of environmental endocrine disruptors (EEDs).

Methods: EEDs contaminated female SD rats, 3-week old, were divided into two groups, the treated group fed with NYRF and the control group with corn oil during the same period of contaminating for 15 days. The wet weight (WW) and organ coefficient (OC) of uterus in rats, as well as the ER protein and mRNA expressions in rat's uterus and ovary were detected and compared.

Background: Abnormal serotonin (5-HT) activity has been implicated in schizophrenia. However, the role of 5-HT receptors and transporter (5-HTT) in male and female schizophrenia remains largely unknown. Recent studies suggest that 5-HT system expressed in the peripheral leukocyte could be a marker of the illness.

Objective: To explore associations between levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and incidence of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes in populations.

Methods: Baseline investigations on stroke-related risk factors and physical examinations were performed in 10 093 (> 35 years) stroke-free urban community residents from 5 cities in China during May to July in 1987, follow-up investigations on stroke events were made during 1998 to 2000. The hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes in middle, high tertiles of baseline TC or TG levels were compared with low baseline tertile residents using the Cox regression model.
