Dihydropyrimidinase (DHP) deficiency is an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the DPYS gene. Patients present with highly elevated levels of dihydrouracil and dihydrothymine in their urine, blood and cerebrospinal fluid. The analysis of the effect of mutations in DPYS on pre-mRNA splicing is hampered by the fact that DHP is primarily expressed in liver and kidney cells.

Genetic variation in STAT4 predicts response to interferon-α therapy for hepatitis B e antigen-positive chronic hepatitis B.

Hepatology

April 2016

State Key Laboratory of Genetic Engineering, Collaborative Innovation Center for Genetics and Development, Fudan University, Shanghai, P.R. China.

Unlabelled: Interferon (IFN)-α is a first-line therapy for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients but only initiates a response in a minority of patients. A genetic variant, rs7574865 in STAT4, was recently reported to be associated with risk of developing CHB and hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma. We aimed to determine whether this variant is associated with the response to IFNα treatment for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive CHB patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on identifying new biomarkers to diagnose focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) in patients with refractory epilepsy.
  • Researchers evaluated serum levels of hsa-miR-4521 and found significant up-regulation in patients with FCD compared to control samples.
  • This discovery suggests that hsa-miR-4521 could serve as a promising diagnostic biomarker for FCD in epilepsy.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most widely discussed and clinically employed method for the differential diagnosis of oligodendrogliomas; however, MRI occasionally produces unclear results that can hinder a definitive oligodendroglioma diagnosis. The present study describes the case of a 34-year-old man that suffered from headache and right upper-extremity weakness for 2 months. Based on the presurgical evaluation, it was suggested that the patient had a World Health Organization (WHO) grade II-II glioma, meningioma or arteriovenous malformation (AVM), with unclear radiological manifestations.

Although surgical resection is the primary means of curing both primary and metastatic lung cancers, about 80% of lung cancers cannot be removed by surgery. As most patients with unresectable lung cancer receive only limited benefits from traditional radiotherapy and chemotherapy, many new local treatment methods have emerged, including local ablation therapy. The Minimally Invasive and Comprehensive Treatment of Lung Cancer Branch, Professional Committee of Minimally Invasive Treatment of Cancer of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association has organized multidisciplinary experts to develop guidelines for this treatment modality.

Primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors: comparing CT and MRI features with pathology.

Cancer Imaging

August 2015

Department of Radiology, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital University of Medical Sciences, Beijing, 100020, China.

Background: Primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors (PHNET) are extremely rare and difficult to distinguish from primary and metastatic liver cancers since PHNETs blood supply comes from the liver artery. This study aims to investigate CT and MR imaging findings of primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumor (PHNET) and correlation with the 2010 WHO pathological classification.

Methods: We examined CT and MRI scans from 29 patients who were diagnosed with PHNET and correlated the data with the 2010 WHO classification of neuroendocrine tumors.

Introduction: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a newly recognized fibro-inflammatory condition. Forty-two cases with immunoglobulin G4-related sialadenitis (IgG4-RS) confirmed by histopathological and immunohistochemical assessment were studied to clarify the clinicopathologic characteristics of the salivary glands involved in IgG4-RS, especially the relationship between the histopathologic features and function of salivary glands or serum levels of IgG4.

Methods: Clinical, serologic, imaging and histopathological data of these cases were analyzed.

Risk Factors for Carotid Artery Stenosis in Chinese Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Interventions.

Medicine (Baltimore)

July 2015

From the Department of Diagnostic Ultrasound, Beijing An Zhen Hospital (YC, JW); and Department of Cardiology, Beijing Shi Ji Tan Hospital, Affiliated of Capital University of Medical Sciences, Beijing, China (JYG, SW, JJP). *Yi Cheng and Junyi Gao contributed equally to this article as the co-first author.

Current guidelines established in the USA and Europe for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) suggest that patients ≥65 and ≥70 years of age, or with certain atherosclerotic-risk factors, should be screened preoperatively for extracranial carotid artery stenosis (CAS) to assess their risk of perioperative stoke. We sought factors that should be taken into consideration when treating Chinese CABG patients using CABG guidelines based on an analysis of CAS in a large cohort of Chinese CABG patients. We analyzed data for 1558 Chinese CABG patients who were screened preoperatively for CAS using duplex ultrasonography at a single institution.

PR-Set7 is Degraded in a Conditional Cul4A Transgenic Mouse Model of Lung Cancer.

Zhongguo Fei Ai Za Zhi

June 2015

Thoracic Oncology Laboratory, Department of Surgery, Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of California, San Francisco, CA 94143, USA.

Background: Maintenance of genomic integrity is essential to ensure normal organismal development and to prevent diseases such as cancer. PR-Set7 (also known as Set8) is a cell cycle regulated enzyme that catalyses monomethylation of histone 4 at Lys20 (H4K20me1) to promote chromosome condensation and prevent DNA damage. Recent studies show that CRL4CDT2-mediated ubiquitylation of PR-Set7 leads to its degradation during S phase and after DNA damage.
