Analyzing the effect of public private partnership mode on sewage treatment in China.

Sci Rep

April 2024

Zhejiang Provincial Branch, The People's Bank of China, Hangzhou, 310001, China.

The public-private partnership (PPP) mode is one of the main ways to promote environmental governance through marketization in the sewage treatment industry. This mode is crucial for environmental protection and livelihood improvement. In order to investigate the impact of PPP mode on sewage treatment, the influence of financial development and the government-business relationship on the effectiveness of sewage treatment under PPP mode, and the role of government in this context, an empirical model is established.

Over the last several years, nationally disseminated course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) have emerged as an alternative to developing a novel CURE from scratch, but objective assessment of these multi-institution (network) CUREs across institutions is challenging due to differences in student populations, instructors, and fidelity of implementation. The time, money, and skills required to develop and validate a CURE-specific assessment instrument can be prohibitive. Here, we describe a co-design process for assessing a network CURE [the Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment (PARE)] that did not require support through external funding, was a relatively low time commitment for participating instructors, and resulted in a validated instrument that is usable across diverse PARE network institution types and implementation styles.

Can digital economy compensate the effect of aging on total factor productivity?

PLoS One

April 2024

National Academy of Innovation Strategy, China Association for Science and Technology, Beijing, China.

In China, the number of senior citizens has grown, along with the burden of old age, and aging has hampered economic growth. The advent of the digital age has led to the emergence of the digital economy as a new engine for economic growth. This paper uses DEA-Malmquist index model to measure the total factor productivity growth rate of 31 provinces in China from 2011 to 2021, and uses the moderating effects model to empirically investigate the relationship between the digital economy, aging and total factor productivity, and to verify whether the development of the digital economy can mitigate the negative impact of aging on total factor productivity.

In 2011, China implemented tougher driving-under-the-influence laws, which criminalized driving under the influence of alcohol for the first time and increased penalties. This paper provides the first comprehensive analysis of the effects of stricter drinking policies on men's smoking behavior by using data from the 2010 and 2012 waves of the China Family Panel Studies. The results show that stricter drinking policies reduced smoking initiation and the number of cigarettes smoked per day among men by reducing the frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption.

Aerobic fitness as a moderator of acute aerobic exercise effects on executive function.

Cereb Cortex

April 2024

The Center of Neuroscience and Sports, Capital University of Physical Education and Sports, No. 11, North 3rd Ring West Road, Haidian District, Beijing, 100191, China.

This study aimed to investigate the moderating role of aerobic fitness on the effect of acute exercise on improving executive function from both behavioral and cerebral aspects. Thirty-four young individuals with motor skills were divided into high- and low-fitness groups based on their maximal oxygen uptake. Both groups completed 30 min of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on a power bike.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the global threat posed by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia (CRKP), specifically focusing on the highly virulent ST11 clone.
  • A multicenter survey conducted in China from 2011 to 2021 reveals a significant rise in KL64 serotypes, indicating its spread and evolution over time.
  • Phylogenetic analysis suggests that ST11 CRKP originated in the Americas and has developed traits associated with high mortality and resistance, highlighting the need for ongoing surveillance and intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the impact of 16 weeks of varied aerobic activities on physical fitness and executive functions in 90 right-handed primary school students in China.
  • Participants were divided into four groups: control, physical activity, intellectual activity, and a combination of both, with each group undergoing daily sessions for 16 weeks.
  • Results showed that while body composition remained unchanged, both physical and intellectual activities significantly enhanced physical fitness and executive functions, with the combination of both exercises yielding the most notable improvements.

Potential diagnostic and drug target markers in glioblastoma.

Sci Rep

March 2024

Department of Bioinformatics and Biosciences, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Capital University of Science and Technology (CUST), Islamabad, 44000, Pakistan.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) IDH-wildtype is the most prevalent brain malignancy in adults. However, molecular mechanisms, which leads to GBM have not been completely elucidated. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF), Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor receptor GCSFR, and Signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3) have been involved in the occurrence and development of various cancers, but their role in GBM is little known.

This study aimed to compare the effects of 8 weeks (24 sessions) between flywheel complex training with eccentric overload and traditional complex training of well-trained volleyball players on muscle adaptation, including hypertrophy, strength, and power variables. Fourteen athletes were recruited and randomly divided into the flywheel complex training with an eccentric-overload group (FCTEO,  = 7) and the control group (the traditional complex training group, TCT,  = 7). Participants performed half-squats using a flywheel device or Smith machine and drop jumps, with three sets of eight repetitions and three sets of 12 repetitions, respectively.

Purpose: Our study aims to evaluate the global burden of disease attributable to IPV from 1990 to 2019 at global, regional, national, and socio-demographic index (SDI) levels. Our research question is: What is the global burden of disease attributable to intimate partner violence (IPV) from 1990 to 2019, and how does it vary at global, regional, national, and socio-demographic index (SDI) levels?

Methods: Data parameters for the number of deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and age-standardized rate were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. We calculated the percentage change and population attributable fraction with 95% uncertainty intervals.

Equity crowdfunding provides entrepreneurs and founders the opportunity to raise funds from a large number of potential investors, using quality signals to influence their investment decisions. Drawing from the lens of signaling theory and the elaboration likelihood model, this study explores the role of successive equity crowdfunding rounds as a quality signal in shaping investors' preferences in crowdfunded firms and its influence on their investment decisions. Our findings reveal that successive equity crowdfunding rounds serve as quality signals, modeling investors' preferences and thereby resulting in a high magnitude of success factors.
