The world is experiencing a demographic shift toward an increasing proportion of elderly persons. Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurological disorders are far more likely to develop as people age. AD is a gradual, irreversible, and degenerative brain disorder that progressively deteriorates memory and cognitive function, eventually leading to death.

Background: Paediatric mortality rates in low- and middle-income countries account for over 80% of the global burden. In South Africa, one in every 33 children will not reach the age of five. Despite the high mortality rate, there is a paucity of data describing the prehospital paediatric under-five emergency care burden in South Africa.

Alginate, a polysaccharide found in brown seaweeds, has regularly gained attention for its potential use as a source of bioactive compounds. However, it is structurally complex with a high molecular weight, limiting its application. Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) are small, soluble fragments, making them more bioavailable.

The study examines the effective use of AAVI-and-cryotherapy treatment on HPV-diagnosed women. Female patients of the reproductive age (20-49 years) group visiting 2 Namibian healthcare facilities for AAVI and cryotherapy treatment were investigated using a cross-sectional approach.

Background: Netball, with its dynamic movements, poses a high injury risk, notably to the ankles and knees. This study examined the injury knowledge and attitudes of semi-professional netball players in the Western Cape, South Africa.
Methods: In this study 117 semi-professional female netball players from eight clubs in the Western Cape district were conveniently sampled.

In this research we identified the training needs of paramedics in Australia regarding elder abuse identification and response. Ten qualitative interviews with paramedics and paramedic educators from each state and territory were conducted between January and March 2024. Participants encountered elder abuse in their professional capacity, often manifesting as neglect although responses were variable, influenced by the jurisdiction, whether the paramedic had specialist training, how much "scene time" was permitted, workload pressures, and if there were clear protocols and guidelines from the ambulance service on how to respond to elder abuse.

Resource-limited burn centers are usually devoid of cultured epithelial autografts (CEA) owing largely to prohibitive costs. A modified CEA technique at our burn center incorporated cost-effective, routinely-used dressings with favorable outcomes. One unknown concern was the immunosuppressive effect that extensive burns and potentially human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection may have on graft take.

(synonym ) is an important South African medicinal plant used traditionally to treat different human pathologies and is considered an adaptogenic plant. This study sought to isolate compounds from the plant and determine their protective potentials using SH-SY5Y cells and MPP (1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium) to mimic Parkinson's disease. The phytochemical analysis of a 70% aqueous methanolic extract of leaves resulted in the isolation and identification of 11 pure compounds (-), among which compounds and were identified as new metabolites.

The current research involved the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) using an aqueous extract of shoots, and subsequent characterization via different analytical methods, such as UV-Vis spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), and zeta potential. The biological effects of the ZnO-NPs were then tested against C3A hepatocyte cells and L6 myocyte cell lines via series of analysis, including cytotoxicity, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effect via enzymatic inhibition. The UV-Vis analysis showed a maximum absorption spectrum at 360, and the TEM analysis reveals a spherical and hexagonal structures, with an average dimension of 28.

Background: Previous paediatric diagnostic reference levels (PDRL) literature reviews for commonly performed procedures of the brain, chest and abdomen revealed wide DRL variation and deviation of scanning protocols across CT centres. The current review went further to determine the extent and possible factors of DRL variation in the same procedure, age or weight group, between scanners and CT centres for the standardisation of CT practice globally.
Methods: The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) flow chart was used to screen articles in Science Direct, Medline, Academic Search Complete via EBSCOhost, PubMed, and CINAHL via EBSCOhost including the Google search engine.

Glioblastoma, the most aggressive brain cancer, is challenging to treat owing to the difficulty of crossing the blood-brain barrier, high recurrence rates and significant mortality. This review highlights the potential of green synthesis methods in developing metal nanoparticles (MNPs) as a sustainable solution for drug delivery systems targeting glioblastoma. We explore the unique properties and modes of action of MNPs synthesised through eco-friendly processes by focusing on their bioavailability and precision in brain targeting, and discuss the potential of MNPs to target glioblastoma at the molecular level.

Objective: Work in seafood harvesting and processing has been associated with a range of occupational hazards and associated health problems. However, limited information exists regarding the occupational health risks among workers engaged in seaweed handling.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to map seaweed co-operatives ( = 45), assess working practices, and identify common work-related symptoms, occupational hazards, and interventions in seaweed farming sites ( = 24), across three regions of Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Introduction: Professional socialisation entails acquisition and internalisation of knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become members of a chosen profession. In the healthcare professions, the process is initiated during undergraduate academic and clinical learning, with clinical learning considered as more significant. This suggests that clinical radiographers play a key role in socialising students into the radiography profession.

Unlabelled: The growing frequency and severity of disasters worldwide have highlighted the need for environmental health practitioners to be equipped with specialised training to respond effectively to evolving public health contexts. Disasters can have long-lasting impacts on the environment and environmental health services, necessitating prompt and effective responses. However, the current environmental health workforce faces challenges in acquiring the necessary competencies to address environmental health threats during disasters.

Introduction: South Africa (SA) is portrayed as a developing country facing many socio-economic challenges. Service-Learning (SL) is considered an integral part of work-integrated learning (WIL) whereby students are provided an opportunity to experience the real world of work by putting to practice the theory that they have been taught. In the context of this paper, SL is embedded in the undergraduate curriculum of medical imaging and therapeutic sciences (MITS) students in SA, in the form of a SL community project (SLCP).
