To tackle the rise of antibiotic resistant pathogenic microbes, iron withdrawal agents have shown considerable promise as antibiotic alternatives due to the microbes' irreplaceable metabolic need for the essential element iron. DIBI is a water-soluble, linear co-polymer functionalized with 3-hydroxy-pyridin-4-one (HPO) chelators that selectively and strongly bind iron(III) in biological environments. Compared to HPO congeners, DIBI has over 1000 times higher antimicrobial activity against a broad-spectrum of Gram-(+) and Gram-(-) bacteria including highly antibiotic resistant clinical isolates.

Objective: Altered diurnal cortisol rhythms are a potential mechanism through which symptoms of fatigue are maintained in post-treatment cancer survivors. Exposure to early morning bright light may target this underlying dysregulation, resulting in improved diurnal cortisol patterns, subsequently improving symptoms of fatigue. This research investigates the effects of a 4-week light therapy intervention on the diurnal cortisol slopes and output in fatigued cancer survivors.

Vulvovaginal symptoms (VVS), such as dyspareunia, dryness, and itching, are common following cancer treatment and can negatively impact sexual well-being, daily activities, mood, self-concept, and overall quality of life. Information about the impact of VVS after cancer treatment is scarce, mainly because of a dearth of validated measures. This study aimed to validate the Day-to-Day Impact of Vaginal Aging (DIVA) questionnaire, which assesses impact of VVS on women's lives, in a sample of women with cancer.

Presently, there is lack of a vaccine that would lead to immunization against the virus COVID-19, but here are some of the characteristics that various seaweeds have and which may provide a glimpse into potential solutions of this global health problem in the near future and possibly forearm us for any future such pandemics. Many species of marine algae contain significant quantities of complex structural sulphated polysaccharides that have been shown to inhibit the replication of enveloped viruses. Other compounds, both of red algae (e.

Patient satisfaction is important to patient outcomes. Previous attempts to conceptualize satisfaction have often taken an atheoretical approach and focused on doctors' communication skills. Patients are becoming more active health consumers involved in their health care and current definitions of patient satisfaction may not accurately reflect patient expectations about their health consultations.

Surgical site infections increase health care costs, morbidity, and mortality in 2% to 5% of surgical patients. Standardised post-surgical surveillance is rare in community settings, causing under-reporting and under-serving of the documented 60% of surgical site infections occurring following hospital discharge. This study evaluated feasibility and concordance (inter-rater reliability) of paired registered nurses using a web-based surveillance tool (how2trakSSI, based on validated guidelines) to detect surgical site infections for up to 30 days after surgery in a cohort of 101 patients referred to Calea Home Care Clinics in Toronto, Canada, March 2015 to July 2016.

Hyaluronic acid (HA), a common biopolymer found in the extracellular fluid, was grafted with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to form a composite polymer that could form inclusion complexes with tocopherol (VE), enhancing its water-solubility and serving as a model drug delivery system. Herein, different copolymers were prepared with varying HA:β-CD ratios and characterized. VE loading capacity was directly correlated with increased β-CD composition in the polymers and morphological changes were observed upon VE binding.

The Sexual Distress Scale (SDS) can be used to assess sexual distress in women, men, and prostate cancer (PCa) survivors. Despite its strong psychometric properties, researchers and clinicians could benefit from a short form of the scale. Two studies were conducted to develop (Study 1) and validate (Study 2) a short form of the SDS (SDS-SF) using samples of women, men, and PCa survivors from previous studies.

This research challenges the claim that engaging in formal volunteering improves health. Using data for the 50 American states pertaining to 2015-2016, multiple regression equations with differing control and entry order demonstrated the capacity of state resident neuroticism to eliminate relations between state volunteering rates and state health outcomes. In Study 1, with state SES, White population percent, urban population percent, and health environment considered and controlled, volunteering accounted for 11.

In an attempt to address issues accompanying the unnecessary change of wound dressings of patients in traditional wound care management, we are developing smart wound dressing material, based on magnetic nanosensors, for wireless monitoring of the wound healing process. The technology is based on magnetizing the cellulose component of the dressing and tuning the resulting magnetic cellulose to respond to temperature changes of the wound. Here, we report the development of the magnetic cellulose through grafting of magnetic CoFeO nanoparticles (CoFeO NPs) onto cellulose fibers using a layer-by-layer method.
