Influence of Post-radiation Ocular Surface Disorder on Ocular Surgery: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Background: Ocular surface disorder after ocular radiation therapy, even though commonly reported, is often overlooked. Any delay in diagnosis may lead to complications that threaten vision. The presented case highlights the clinical outcome of a severe post-radiation disorder of the ocular surface, the importance of intensive therapy, and the limitations of further surgical interventions.

Electrodiagnostic Biomarkers in Paraneoplastic Retinopathy.

Objective: Paraneoplastic retinopathy (PNR) is a rapid-onset photoreceptor and post-photoreceptor dysfunction triggered by a cross-reaction between antigens expressed by the underlying tumour and retinal proteins. The present study aims to determine the electrodiagnostic biomarkers that support the diagnosis of PNR and evaluate the effect of treatment.

Methods: A retrospective observational case-controlled study including 25 patients with suspected PNR, of which 11 patients were diagnosed with PNR.

Background: Knowing whether shift work negatively affects the immune system's response to COVID-19 vaccinations could be valuable for planning future vaccination campaigns for healthcare workers. We aimed to determine the impact of working late or night shifts on serum anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike protein immunoglobulin G (anti-S) antibody levels after primary SARS-CoV-2-mRNA vaccination.

Methods: To obtain detailed information on shift work, we sent a separate online questionnaire to 1475 eligible healthcare workers who participated in a prospective longitudinal study conducted in 15 healthcare institutions in Switzerland.

Circulating HBV RNA and Hepatitis B Core-Related Antigen Trajectories in Persons With HIV/HBV Coinfection and Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Loss During Tenofovir Therapy.

Background: We evaluated long-term trajectories of circulating hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA and hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) in persons with and without hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) loss during tenofovir therapy in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study.

Methods: We included 29 persons with HIV with HBsAg loss and 29 matched persons with HIV without HBsAg loss. We compared HBV RNA and HBcrAg decline and assessed the cumulative proportions with undetectable HBV RNA and HBcrAg levels during tenofovir therapy using Kaplan-Meier estimates.

Unintentional Plastic Blister Ingestion Leading to Intestinal Perforation: A Report of Two Cases.

BACKGROUND Unintentional medication-blister ingestion is rare but frequently leads to intestinal perforation. The diagnosis of intestinal perforation following blister ingestion is often delayed because of an unreliable history and nonspecific clinical presentation. The purpose of this case report is to raise awareness about a rare but difficult diagnosis and its importance in avoiding potentially fatal events.

Experience with the utilization of new-generation shared-control robotic system for spinal instrumentation.

Background: Robotic assistance in spine surgery is emerging as an accurate, effective and enabling technology utilized in the treatment of patients with surgical spinal pathology. The safety and reproducibility of robotic assistance in the placement of pedicle screw instrumentation is still being investigated. The objective of this study was to present our experience of instrumented spinal fusion utilizing an intraoperative robotic guidance system.

Background: Antiretroviral therapy (ART)-related weight gain is of particular concern in people with HIV (PWH). Although weight gain was observed among PWH receiving tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), little is known about the potential reversibility after TAF discontinuation. We evaluated weight and metabolic changes 12 months after TAF discontinuation in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study.

Vertebral osteomyelitis with - a case report and review of the literature of a very rare disease.

Infections with species mainly cause gastrointestinal disease and are usually self-limiting. Systemic complications such as bacteremia and osteoarticular infections are rare. Here we report a very rare case of a vertebral osteomyelitis due to , and we reviewed the literature for similar cases, identifying six other cases.

Free Flap Reconstruction of Sternal Defects after Cardiac Surgery: An Algorithmic Approach for Dealing with Sparse Recipient Vessels.

Background: Sparsity of recipient vessels poses a challenge for microsurgical free flap reconstruction of sternal defects following deep sternal wound infection after cardiac surgery.

Methods: From January 2013, a standardized algorithm for dealing with sparse recipient vessels was strictly followed. In this retrospective study including 75 patients, we compared operative details, surgical complications, and reconstructive outcomes of patients treated according to this algorithm (group A: January 2013-May 2021; n = 46) with a historical control group (group B: January 2000-December 2012, n = 29).

Swiss Multicenter Ab Interno XEN45 Gel Stent Study: 2-Year Real-World Data.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the 2-year postoperative efficacy of the XEN45 Gel Stent by evaluating the reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) and the need for eye pressure-lowering medications in a multicenter setting in Switzerland.

Methods: Patients with various types of glaucoma who received a XEN45 Gel Stent with or without combined phacoemulsification cataract surgery at five hospitals in Switzerland were retrospectively enrolled. Pre- and postoperative IOP, the number of antiglaucoma medications, and the need of subsequent interventions to control IOP were assessed.

Efficacy and Tolerability of Intranasal Midazolam Administration for Antiseizure Treatment in Adults: A Systematic Review.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of intranasal midazolam (in-MDZ) administration for antiseizure treatment in adults.

Methods: Embase and Medline literature databases were searched. We included randomized trials and cohort studies (excluding case series) of adult patients (≥ 18 years of age) examining in-MDZ administration for epilepsy, epileptic seizures, or status epilepticus published in English between 1985 and 2022.

Historic characteristics and mortality of patients in the Swiss Amyloidosis Registry.

Aims Of The Study: Systemic amyloidoses are rare protein-folding diseases with heterogeneous, often nonspecific clinical presentations. To better understand systemic amyloidoses and to apply state-of-the-art diagnostic pathways and treatment, the interdisciplinary Amyloidosis Network was founded in 2013 at University Hospital Zurich. In this respect, a registry was implemented to study the characteristics and life expectancy of patients with amyloidosis within the area covered by the network.

Hepatitis C prevalence and cascade of care among patients in the decentralised opioid agonist therapy programme of the canton of St Gallen, Switzerland: a cross-sectional study.

Background: To eliminate chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection by 2030, 90% of those infected must be diagnosed and 80% treated. In Switzerland, >40% of the estimated 32,000 infected people are still undiagnosed. In the canton of St Gallen, HCV prevalence and cascade of care have only been studied in the centralised opioid agonist therapy (OAT) setting (institutions), although about 80% of OAT patients are treated decentrally (general practitioner [GP] or pharmacy).

Efficacy of hinged and carbon fiber ankle-foot orthoses in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy and drop-foot gait pattern.

Background: In children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP), ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are widely used to correct common gait deviations such as a drop-foot pattern. Most studies on this topic have investigated specific time points while omitting other parts of the gait cycle.

Objectives: This study investigated the separate effects of prefabricated carbon fiber AFOs and custom-made hinged AFOs compared with barefoot walking in children with USCP with a drop-foot gait pattern using statistical parametric mapping.

Accuracy between prehospital and hospital diagnosis in helicopter emergency medical services and its consequences for trauma care.

Purpose: For optimal prehospital trauma care, it is essential to adequately recognize potential life-threatening injuries in order to correctly triage patients and to initiate life-saving measures. The aim of the present study was to determine the accuracy of prehospital diagnoses suspected by helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS).

Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included patients from the Swiss Trauma Registry with ISS ≥ 16 or AIS head ≥ 3 transported by Switzerland's largest HEMS and subsequently admitted to one of twelve Swiss trauma centers from 01/2020 to 12/2020.

Population Pharmacokinetics of Cabotegravir Following Oral Administration and Long-Acting Intramuscular Injection in Real-World People with HIV.

Long-acting cabotegravir has been studied mainly in the stringent framework of clinical trials, which does not necessarily reflect the situation of people with HIV (PWH) in routine clinical settings. The present population pharmacokinetic analysis aims to build real-world reference percentile curves of cabotegravir concentrations, accounting for patient-related factors that may affect cabotegravir exposure. The second objective is to simulate whether dosing interval adjustments of cabotegravir could be considered in specific subpopulations.

Genetic Diversity From Proviral DNA as a Proxy for Time Since HIV-1 Infection.

HIV-1 RNA genetic diversity predicts time since infection, which is important for clinical care and research. It is unclear, however, whether proviral DNA genetic diversity sampled under suppressive antiretroviral therapy can be used for this purpose. We tested whether proviral genetic diversity from next-generation sequencing predicts time since infection and recency in 221 people with HIV-1 with known infection time.
