An analysis of virtual reality in abdominal surgery-A scoping review.

Background: The integration of virtual reality (VR) in surgery has gained prominence as VR applications have increased in popularity.

Methods: A scoping review was undertaken, gathering the most relevant sources, utilising a detailed literature search of medical and academic databases including EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane, IEEE, Google Scholar, and the Google search engine.

Results: Of the 18 articles included, 7 focused on VR in colon surgery, 5 addressed VR in pancreas surgery, and the remaining 6 concentrated on VR in liver surgery.

Purpose: To predict the corresponding age of myelin maturation from brain MRI scans in infants and young children by using a deep learning algorithm and to build upon previously published models.

Materials And Methods: Brain MRI scans acquired between January 1, 2011, and March 17, 2021, in our institution in patients aged 0-3 years were retrospectively retrieved from the archive. An ensemble of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) convolutional neural network models was trained and internally validated in 710 patients to predict myelin maturation age on the basis of radiologist-generated labels.

Introduction: Treatment with biologics for severe asthma is informed by international and national guidelines and defined by national regulating bodies, but how these drugs are used in real-life is unknown.

Materials And Methods: The European Respiratory Society (ERS) SHARP Clinical Research Collaboration conducted a three-step survey collecting information on asthma biologics use in Europe. Five geographically distant countries defined the survey questions, focusing on seven end-points: biologics availability and financial issues, prescription and administration modalities, inclusion criteria, continuation criteria, switching biologics, combining biologics and evaluation of corticosteroid toxicity.

The metastatic spread of cancer is achieved by the haematogenous dissemination of circulating tumour cells (CTCs). Generally, however, the temporal dynamics that dictate the generation of metastasis-competent CTCs are largely uncharacterized, and it is often assumed that CTCs are constantly shed from growing tumours or are shed as a consequence of mechanical insults. Here we observe a striking and unexpected pattern of CTC generation dynamics in both patients with breast cancer and mouse models, highlighting that most spontaneous CTC intravasation events occur during sleep.

Recurrence of IgA nephropathy after kidney transplantation: experience from the Swiss transplant cohort study.

Background: Recurrence of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) after kidney transplantation occurs in about 30% of patients. The relevance of recurrence for the long-term graft survival is expected to increase, since graft survival continues to improve.

Methods: In a nested study within the Swiss Transplant Cohort Study the incidence of IgAN recurrence, predictive factors, graft function and graft and patient survival were evaluated.

Distinct Cognitive Function Profiles Are Associated With a Higher Presurgery Symptom Burden in Patients With Breast Cancer.

Background: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a common symptom in patients with breast cancer. In our previous study of 397 women with breast cancer, we identified 3 groups of patients with distinct CRCI profiles (ie, high, moderate, and low-moderate attentional function). Compared with the other 2 classes, the low-moderate class was younger, had more comorbidities, and with lower functional status.

ERS/ATS technical standard on interpretive strategies for routine lung function tests.

Background: Appropriate interpretation of pulmonary function tests (PFTs) involves the classification of observed values as within/outside the normal range based on a reference population of healthy individuals, integrating knowledge of physiological determinants of test results into functional classifications and integrating patterns with other clinical data to estimate prognosis. In 2005, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and European Respiratory Society (ERS) jointly adopted technical standards for the interpretation of PFTs. We aimed to update the 2005 recommendations and incorporate evidence from recent literature to establish new standards for PFT interpretation.

Myocarditis and pericarditis in association with COVID-19 mRNA-vaccination: cases from a regional pharmacovigilance centre.

In this article we summarize suspected adverse events following immunization (AEFI) of pericarditis, myocarditis and perimyocarditis that were reported by our regional pharmacovigilance centre after COVID-19 mRNA-vaccination and discuss their association with these vaccines. Seventeen cases were reported between March and July 2021. Of these, nine had perimyocarditis, five myocarditis and three pericarditis.

Combined Simplified Molecular Classification of Gastric Adenocarcinoma, Enhanced by Lymph Node Status: An Integrative Approach.

Gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) is a heterogeneous disease and at least two major studies have recently provided a molecular classification for this tumor: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Asian Cancer Research Group (ARCG). Both classifications quote four molecular subtypes, but these subtypes only partially overlap. In addition, the classifications are based on complex and cost-intensive technologies, which are hardly feasible for everyday practice.

The persistence of undetectable disseminated tumour cells (DTCs) after primary tumour resection poses a major challenge to effective cancer treatment. These enduring dormant DTCs are seeds of future metastases, and the mechanisms that switch them from dormancy to outgrowth require definition. Because cancer dormancy provides a unique therapeutic window for preventing metastatic disease, a comprehensive understanding of the distribution, composition and dynamics of reservoirs of dormant DTCs is imperative.
