Background: Clinicopathological diagnosis and follow-up of oral lichen planus and leukoplakia are necessary due to its potential for malignant transformation and the need to differentiate it from other lichenoid diseases and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia. This study aimed to classify and compare sociodemographic and clinicopathological features among patients with oral lichen planus, oral lichenoid lesions and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia.

Methods: A transversal observational study in which oral leukoplakia and oral lichen planus patients were surveyed at the Oral Pathological Anatomy Service and Applied Biotechnology Laboratory was conducted.

We used our mouse papillomavirus (MmuPV1) model to test the hypothesis that two primary psychoactive ingredients of marijuana, Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), promote papillomavirus persistence in the oral mucosa of infected mice. We conducted intraperitoneal (ip) injections of a moderate dose (3 mg/kg) of either CBD and/or THC in both male and female athymic nude mice and followed the mice up to 20 weeks post-infection. These doses are comparable to what is estimated for human conventional cannabis consumption.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of oral mucosa is increasingly affecting younger individuals, particularly in the tongue. SCC can develop from disorders like oral lichen planus (OLP). This case highlights the first known instance of OLP and SCC in a pregnant woman, suggesting hormonal changes and HPV as possible risk factors.

Oral leukoplakia is classified among oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) by the World Health Organization (WHO). The visual oral examination (VOE) is the most used method for identifying lesions in their early stages. Given that the diagnosis of oral cancer is often late, there is an urgent need for early detection and examination of oral lesions.

The aim of this prospective study was to determine the effectiveness of screening using image processing analysis and a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to classify oral cancers using non-invasive fluorescence visualization. The study included 1076 patients with diseases of the oral mucosa (oral cancer, oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), benign disease) or normal mucosa. For oral cancer, the rate of fluorescence visualization loss (FVL) was 96.

Background: Trace elements are the important components that play a crucial role in various functions of the human body at cellular and molecular levels. Considering the role of the trace elements in precancerous and cancerous conditions, estimation of their levels in these conditions could aid in understanding the disease process and progression. The purpose of this study is to determine the alteration in salivary electrolyte concentration of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients to correlate the variations with the severity and biological behaviour.

Merkel cell: Friend or felon.

J Oral Maxillofac Pathol

October 2024

Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, ITS-CDSR, Muradnagar, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Merkel cells are perceived as tactile receptors within skin and oral mucosa containing abundant intermediate filaments but lacking characteristic condensation of tonofilaments, hence are also referred to as non-keratinocytes. Merkel cell carcinomas (MCCs) are primary aggressive neuroendocrine neoplasms occurring in elderly individuals. Toker in 1972 reported MCC of skin pointing towards sweat glands as the source of origin which was later rectified by Tang with the aid of ultrastructural studies as Merkel cells to be a lineage of such tumours.

Recent research suggests that STEAP4, a metalloreductase , plays a crucial role in various types of tumorigeneses, especially in gastrointestinal cancers. However, few oncogenes have been reported in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Therefore, this study aimed to explore the potential role of STEAP4 in OSCC.

There is an interaction between dendrocytes and mast cells in the skin. However, in elastosis-related diseases such as actinic cheilitis (AC) and lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC), this interaction remains unknown. We investigated the presence of intact and degranulated mast cells in AC and LLSCC.

Article Synopsis
  • The oral cavity can be affected by various diseases that alter the microvascular structure, typically assessed through biopsy samples, but live tissue characterization methods are still under exploration.
  • Capillaroscopy, a technique that uses polarized light and magnification, has shown potential for better imaging of the oral mucosa microvasculature in preliminary studies.
  • The literature review aims to examine capillaroscopy's applications, diagnostic and prognostic significance in oral diseases, while emphasizing the need for more research, particularly in oral oncology, to assess its effectiveness for diagnosing and predicting outcomes of malignant disorders.
