Introduction: Podoplanin and ezrin connection through Rho-A phosphorylation have been suggested as part of the activation pathway, in the process of tumor invasion and cell movement in oral squamous cell carcinomas.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation among podoplanin, ezrin, and Rho-A immunoexpressions in 91 squamous cells carcinomas of the lower lip and their influence in patient's prognosis.

Material And Methods: The immunoexpressions of podoplanin, ezrin, and Rho-A were evaluated through a semi-quantitative score method, based on the capture of 10 microscopic fields at the front of tumor invasion.

Introduction: The aim of this article is to present an experience of two prospective studies from the International Childhood Liver Tumor Strategy Group (SIOPEL 2 [S2] and SIOPEL [S3]) trials and to evaluate whether modified platinum- and doxorubicin-based chemotherapy is capable of increasing tumor resectability and changing patient outcomes.

Methods: Between 1995 and 2006, 20 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were included in the S2 trial and 70 were included in the S3 trial. Eighty-five patients remained evaluable.

Purpose: Surgery of irradiated tissue has an increased complication rate because of the development of hypovascular, hypocellular, and hypoxic tissue. This study was undertaken to perform histopathologic and histomorphometric analyses of irradiation tissue injury in bone and the surrounding soft tissues.

Material And Methods: The histopathologic findings of 40 human mandibular bones and the surrounding soft tissue specimens obtained from different patients who underwent surgical procedures for treatment of osteoradionecrosis of the jaws were reviewed.

Background: The intraoral stent is a mouth-opening device which may be used during head and neck cancer radiotherapy with the intention of preventing unnecessary irradiation in normal adjacent tissue. The use of this device during intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has not been reported in the literature.

Methods: A 30-year-old woman with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue was submitted to a CT for IMRT treatment planning with and without the use of the intraoral stent.

Aim: To evaluate the prognostic importance of MGMT and PTEN concerning their correlation with other prognostic factors evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and the molecular phenotype of breast cancers.

Methods: IHC for estrogen and progesterone receptors, HER2, Ki67, p53, p63, e-cadherin, EGFR, CK5, CK14, MGMT and PTEN was performed on 200 breast tumors. Basal-like and luminal breast carcinomas were defined by the IHC evaluation of these markers.

O6-Methyguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) repairs DNA damage and acts as a tumor suppressor in normal cells by preventing DNA mutations. Several antibodies against MGMT are used for immunohistochemical assessment of this marker and no universal standard is adopted. The present study evaluates the protein expression of estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha), estrogen receptor beta (ERbeta), progesterone receptor (PR) and cKIT in a wide number of desmoids tumors and their role in determining treatment options. Fifty-nine cases classified as muscle aponeurotic fibromatosis were selected. Samples were grouped by tumor location in: head and neck, extremity and abdominal/trunk; type of resection of the primary tumor (complete resection with adequate margins, marginal resection and resection with inadequate margins); type of treatment (exclusive surgery, surgery followed by radiation therapy and surgery followed by tamoxifen or cyclooxygenase inhibitor).

Fourteen pediatric cases of myelodysplastic syndrome according to French-American-British Co-operative Group (FAB) criteria were identified in a retrospective review of all cases of hematologic malignancies referred to the Pediatric Oncology division of the Cancer Hospital A. C. Camargo over a 12-year period: 1 case of refractory anemia, 8 cases of refractory anemia with excess of blasts, and 1 case of refractory anemia with excess of blasts in transformation.
