Background: Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have improved the outcome of patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), but most patients eventually develop resistance and progress. Dasatinib is a potent inhibitor of BCR-ABL, KIT, and SRC family kinases as well as imatinib-resistant cells. In GISTs, response evaluation is routinely done using computed tomography (CT) and F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography coupled to CT (FDG-PET/CT) for early response assessment and outcome prediction.

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEXS) is an age-related elastosis, strongly associated with the development of secondary glaucoma. It is clearly suggested that PEXS has a genetic component, but this has not been extensively studied. Here, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using a DNA-pooling approach was conducted to explore the potential association of genetic variants with PEXS in a Polish population, including 103 PEXS patients without glaucoma and 106 perfectly (age- and gender-) matched controls.

Purpose For the past 65 years, patient age at diagnosis has been widely used as a major mortality risk factor in the risk stratification of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), but whether this is generally applicable, particularly in patients with different BRAF genetic backgrounds, is unclear. The current study was designed to test whether patient age at diagnosis is a major mortality risk factor. Patients and Methods We conducted a comparative study of the relationship between patient age at diagnosis and PTC-specific mortality with respect to BRAF status in 2,638 patients (623 men and 2,015 women) with a median age of 46 years (interquartile range, 35 to 58 years) at diagnosis and a median follow-up time of 58 months (interquartile range, 26 to 107 months).

Lung cancer belongs to malignant tumors that possess the highest rates of morbidity and mortality in the world. A number of morphological, biological and clinical features justify the distinction of small-cell carcinoma with respect to the other histological types of lung cancer. Background: While histopathological evaluation remains the gold standard for diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa), sampling errors remain a frequent problem; therefore, use of tissue biomarkers that can distinguish between benign and malignant prostate disease is a potentially beneficial diagnostic strategy.
Methods: Deep sequencing of the miRNA transcriptome of 14 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and 60 cancerous and non-cancerous prostate samples extracted from 34 cancer-bearing prostates removed by prostatectomy was performed; of the latter 60 samples, 16, 21, and 23 samples contained <10%, >30%, and no dysplastic cells, respectively. The predictive value of selected miRNAs was then tested by quantitative reverse-transcribed PCR (qRT-PCR), using two separate chemistries, Exiqon and Taqman, to evaluate the tissue samples obtained by prostatectomy.

Currently, prediction of time to treatment failure (TTF) and overall survival (OS) in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is based on the clinical factors included in the Mantle Cell Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (MIPI), and proliferation is assessed by Ki67. However, TP53 and SOX11 immunohistochemistry might improve risk stratification. We performed SOX11 and TP53 immunohistochemistry on the so far largest published cohort of lymphoma specimens (n = 365).

Aim Of The Study: Primary bone tumours are relatively rare, but their diagnosis and treatment is difficult and connected with a high risk of complications. The goal of this report is a retrospective evaluation of outcomes in patients with primary tumours of the humerus treated in our centre with the use of modular endoprosthetic reconstruction.
Material And Methods: Currently, surgical treatment is a standard procedure for local therapy, with wide tumour-free margin resection after a planned multidisciplinary and individualised strategy of tumour management based on the diagnostic biopsy result.

Hemophilic arthropathy (HA) is one of the most common and typical manifestation in the course of recurrent bleeding episodes in patients with hemophilia. Clinical and subclinical joint bleeding episodes gradually lead to irreversible changes manifesting themselves as pain, progressing ankylosis, marked limitation of the range of motion, muscle atrophy and osteoporosis commonly concomitant with joint deformity resulting from chronic proliferative synovitis and both cartilage and bone degeneration leading to the final functional impairment of the joint. In spite of numerous studies, the pathophysiology of HA has not been fully elucidated, especially as regards immunopathological mechanisms which are associated with the subclinical and early stage of the disease and to be more precise, with chronic joint inflammation.

Background: There are differences in the histological diagnostic criteria for early stage gastrointestinal carcinoma between Western and Japanese pathologists.
