Under what conditions do citizens support coercive public policies? Although recent research suggests that people prefer policies that preserve freedom of choice, such as behavioural nudges, many citizens accepted stringent policy interventions like fines and mandates to promote vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic-a pattern that may be linked to the unusually high effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines. We conducted a large online survey experiment (N = 42,417) in the Group of Seven (G-7) countries investigating the relationship between a policy's effectiveness and public support for stringent policies. Our results indicate that public support for stringent vaccination policies increases as vaccine effectiveness increases, but at a modest scale.

How memories are organized in the brain influences whether they are remembered discretely versus linked with other experiences or whether generalized information is applied to entirely novel situations. Here, we used scFLARE2 (single-chain fast light- and activity-regulated expression 2), a temporally precise tagging system, to manipulate mouse lateral amygdala neurons active during one of two 3 min threat experiences occurring close (3 h) or further apart (27 h) in time. Silencing scFLARE2-tagged neurons showed that two threat experiences occurring at distal times are dis-allocated to orthogonal engram ensembles and remembered discretely, whereas the same two threat experiences occurring in close temporal proximity are linked via co-allocation to overlapping engram ensembles.

Our paper takes as its starting point the recent proposal, at the core of this special issue, to use the active inference framework (AIF) to computationally model what it is for a person to live a meaningful life. In broad brushstrokes, the AIF takes experiences of human flourishing to be the result of predictions and uncertainty estimations along many dimensions at multiple levels of neurobiological organization. Our aim in this paper is to explain how AIF models predict that uncertainty can sometimes, under the right conditions, be conducive to the experiences of flourishing.

Forests are chiefly responsible for the terrestrial carbon sink that greatly reduces the buildup of CO concentrations in the atmosphere and alleviates climate change. Current predictions of terrestrial carbon sinks in the future have so far ignored the variation of forest carbon uptake with forest age. Here, we predict the role of China's current forest age in future carbon sink capacity by generating a high-resolution (30 m) forest age map in 2019 over China's landmass using satellite and forest inventory data and deriving forest growth curves using measurements of forest biomass and age in 3,121 plots.
