We assessed the feasibility of implementing a virtually guided Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) protocol over the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle while collecting heart rate (HR), Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), and quality of contraction (QoC) data. We investigated if HR, NPRS, and QoC differ ON and OFF the TA motor point and explored potential relationships between heart rate variability (HRV) and the NPRS. Twelve healthy adults participated in this cross-sectional study.

Establishing intervention effectiveness is an important component of a broader knowledge translation (KT) process. However, mobilizing the implementation of these interventions into practice is perhaps the most important aspect of the KT cycle. The purpose of the current study was to conduct an umbrella review to (a) identify promising interventions for SI&L in older adults, (b) interpret (translate) the findings to inform clinical knowledge and practice interventions in different settings and contexts, and (c) highlight research gaps that may hinder the uptake of these interventions in practice.

Robust structural remodeling and synaptic plasticity occurs within spinal autonomic circuitry after severe high-level spinal cord injury (SCI). As a result, normally innocuous visceral or somatic stimuli elicit uncontrolled activation of spinal sympathetic reflexes that contribute to systemic disease and organ-specific pathology. How hyperexcitable sympathetic circuitry forms is unknown, but local cues from neighboring glia likely help mold these maladaptive neuronal networks.

Early diagnosis and accurate prognosis of colorectal cancer is critical for determining optimal treatment plans and maximizing patient outcomes, especially as the disease progresses into liver metastases. Computed tomography (CT) is a frontline tool for this task; however, the preservation of predictive radiomic features is highly dependent on the scanning protocol and reconstruction algorithm. We hypothesized that image reconstruction with a high-frequency kernel could result in a better characterization of liver metastases features via deep neural networks.

Integration of 2D semiconductors with photonic crystal slabs provides an attractive approach to achieving strong light-matter coupling and exciton-polariton formation in a chip-compatible geometry. However, for the development of practical devices, it is crucial that polariton excitations are easily tunable and exhibit a strong nonlinear response. Here we study neutral and charged exciton-polaritons in an electrostatically gated photonic crystal slab with an embedded monolayer semiconductor MoSe and experimentally demonstrate a novel approach to optical control based on polariton nonlinearity.

The rate of mass transfer of lower molecular weight hydrocarbons (naphtha) from bitumen drops in mature fine tailings of oil sand tailings ponds (OSTPs) may control their bioavailability and the associated rate of GHG production. Experiments were conducted using bitumen drops spiked with o-xylene and 1-methylnaphthalene to determine the mass transfer rate of these naphtha components from bitumen drops. The results were compared to simulations using a multi-component numerical model that accounted for transport in the drop and across the oil-water interface.

Emergent design failures are ubiquitous in complex systems, and often arise when system elements cluster. Approaches to systematically reduce clustering could improve a design's resilience, but reducing clustering is difficult if it is driven by collective interactions among design elements. Here, we use techniques from statistical physics to identify mechanisms by which spatial clusters of design elements emerge in complex systems modelled by heterogeneous networks.

Congenital hydrocephalus, characterized by cerebral ventriculomegaly, is one of the most common reasons for paediatric brain surgery. Recent studies have implicated lin-41 (lineage variant 41)/TRIM71 (tripartite motif 71) as a candidate congenital hydrocephalus risk gene; however, TRIM71 variants have not been systematically examined in a large patient cohort or conclusively linked with an OMIM syndrome. Through cross-sectional analysis of the largest assembled cohort of patients with cerebral ventriculomegaly, including neurosurgically-treated congenital hydrocephalus (totalling 2697 parent-proband trios and 8091 total exomes), we identified 13 protein-altering de novo variants (DNVs) in TRIM71 in unrelated children exhibiting variable ventriculomegaly, congenital hydrocephalus, developmental delay, dysmorphic features and other structural brain defects, including corpus callosum dysgenesis and white matter hypoplasia.

We explore the potential of nanocrystals (a term used equivalently to nanoparticles) as building blocks for nanomaterials, and the current advances and open challenges for fundamental science developments and applications. Nanocrystal assemblies are inherently multiscale, and the generation of revolutionary material properties requires a precise understanding of the relationship between structure and function, the former being determined by classical effects and the latter often by quantum effects. With an emphasis on theory and computation, we discuss challenges that hamper current assembly strategies and to what extent nanocrystal assemblies represent thermodynamic equilibrium or kinetically trapped metastable states.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a chronic pain condition that affects a significant portion of the population; yet, this condition is still poorly understood. Prior research has suggested that individuals with FM display a heightened sensitivity to pain and signs of autonomic dysfunction. Recent advances in functional MRI analysis methods to model blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) responses across networks of regions, and structural and physiological modeling (SAPM) have shown the potential to provide more detailed information about altered neural activity than was previously possible.
