Adequate housing is a social determinant of health and well-being, providing stability from which people can engage in important life activities, including self-care and productivity. Social housing is a system-level intervention that aims to provide affordable housing to people vulnerable to experiencing social and economic marginalisation. Given the importance of employment to social-economic status and overall health and well-being, we sought to better understand the available knowledge and research related to employment and living in a social housing environment.

Supporting Women after Obstetric Fistula Surgery to Enhance Their Social Participation and Inclusion.

Obstetric fistula is a childbirth complication causing abnormal openings between the urinary, bowel, and genital tracts, leading to involuntary leakage and potential long-term disability. Even after surgical repair, women continue to face psychological and social challenges that affect their social inclusion and participation. This study explored family and service provider perspectives on current support systems and identified gaps affecting women's inclusion and participation post-fistula surgery.

Storing liquid chromatographic separations on surface energy traps: decoupling the LC and the mass spectrometer.

We report a micro-fractionation device for high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to archive chromatographic separations on an array of optimized surface energy traps (SETs). The method has the potential to significantly alter nanoflow LC-MS workflow, decoupling separation and analysis. The wetting characteristics of the SETs cause the HPLC eluent stream to spontaneously split into droplet microfractions.

A compositional analysis of time spent in physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep with quality of life in Canadian older adults aged 65 years and above: findings from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Associations between daily time spent in physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviour (SB), and sleep (collectively referred to as "movement behaviour") and quality of life (QOL) are typically studied without considering they are compositional, co-dependant variables. Study objectives were to use compositional data analysis to: (1) examine the relationship between movement behaviour composition and QOL, (2) estimate the degree to which changing time spent in any movement behaviour within the movement behaviour composition is associated with QOL. 7918 older Canadian adults ≥65 years of age from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging were studied using a quasi-longitudinal study design.

Rapid assembly of mixed thiols for toll-like receptor-based electrochemical pathogen sensing.

Herein, we describe a rapid and facile fabrication of electrochemical sensors utilizing two different toll-like receptor (TLR) proteins as biorecognition elements to detect bacterial pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). Using potential-assisted self-assembly, binary mixtures of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) and 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (MCH), or MUA and an in-house synthesized zwitterionic sulfobetaine thiol (DPS) were assembled on a gold working electrode within 5 minutes, which is >200 times shorter than other TLR sensors' preparation time. Electrochemical methods and X-ray photoelectron microscopy were used to characterize the SAM layers.

From Treatment to Recovery: Gynecological Survivors' and Caregivers' Perspectives About the Usability of an Educational Resource.

The objective of this study was to understand gynecological cancer (GC) survivors' and their informal caregivers' perceptions about the usability of an educational resource to support their transition from primary cancer treatment into surveillance and/or recovery. After developing an empirical- and experiential-informed educational resource, we used a semi-structured questioning process to understand GC survivors and their caregivers' perceptions about its usability. Data were collected via online focus groups or 1:1 interviews that were audio recorded and transcribed.

Background: With advancements in burn treatment and intensive care leading to decreased mortality rates, a growing cohort of burn survivors is emerging. Integration of complementary split-ring resonators into digital microfluidics for manipulation and direct sensing of droplet composition.

This paper demonstrates the integration of complementary split-ring resonators (CSSRs) with digital microfluidics (DMF) sample manipulation for passive, on-chip radio-frequency (RF) sensing. Integration is accomplished by having the DMF and the RF-sensing components share the same ground plane: by designing the RF-resonant openings directly into the ground plane of a DMF device, both droplet motion and sensing are achieved, adding a new on-board detection mode for use in DMF. The system was modelled to determine basic features and to balance various factors that need to be optimized to maintain both functionalities (DMF-enabled droplet movement and RF detection) on the same chip.
