Introduction: Older adults are at increased risk of severe illness and mortality from Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) infection. However, public health strategies aimed at reducing spread of COVID-19 may have resulted in increased mental health symptoms, particularly among older adults. Currently, little is known about whether older Veterans were more likely to experience persistent mental health symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic than non-Veterans.

Significant developments have been made in the field of wearable healthcare by utilizing soft materials for the construction of electronic sensors. However, the lack of adaptability to complex topologies, such as ear canal, results in inadequate sensing performance. Here, we report an in-ear physiological sensor with mechanical adaptability, which softens upon contact with the ear canal's skin, thus reducing the sensor-skin mechanical mismatch and interface impedance.

Why should, and how can, the fields of climate science and geroscience (which studies the biology of ageing) facilitate the cross-disciplinary collaboration needed to ensure that human and planetary health are both promoted in the future of an older, and warmer, world? Appealing to the ideal of 'wisdom-oriented' science (Maxwell 1984 In ), where scientists consider themselves to be artisans working for the public good, a number of the real-world epistemic constraints on the scientific enterprise are identified. These include communicative frames that stoke intergenerational conflict (rather than solidarity) and treat the ends of planetary and human health as independent 'sacred values' (Tetlock 2003 , 320-324) rather than as ends. To foster 'climate geroscience'-the field of knowledge and translational science at the intersection of climate science and geroscience-researchers in both fields are encouraged to think of novel ways they could make researchers from the other field 'conversationally' present when framing the aspirations of their respective fields, applying for grant funding and designing their conferences and managing their scientific journals.

Introduction: Ionizing radiation is a human carcinogen, and there is a public concern but limited evidence that it increases the incidence of cancer among those who live near nuclear power plants (NPPs). Previous analyses of thyroid cancer in these populations have been inconsistent, and the last synthesis was published nearly a decade ago. To address these gaps, we undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Rates of molecular evolution vary greatly among even closely related species. Although theory predicts that antagonistic interactions between species increase rates of molecular evolution, predictions for how mutualism affects evolutionary rates are mixed. We compared rates of molecular evolution between (i) mutualistic and non-mutualistic legumes, (ii) an independent set of symbiotic rhizobia and their non-symbiotic close relatives, and (iii) symbiotic and non-symbiotic clades within Ensifer, a diverse genus of bacteria with various lifestyles.

We have previously reported that the calcineurin inhibitor macrolide immunosuppressant Tacrolimus (TAC, FK506) can promote the migration and invasion of the human-derived extravillous trophoblast cells conducive to preventing implantation failure in immune-complicated gestations manifesting recurrent implantation failure. Although the exact mode of action of TAC in promoting implantation has yet to be elucidated, the integral association of its binding protein FKBP12 with the inositol triphosphate receptor (IP3R) regulated intracellular calcium [Ca]i channels in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), suggesting that TAC can mediate its action through ER release of [Ca]i. Using the immortalized human-derived first-trimester extravillous trophoblast cells HTR8/SVneo, our data indicated that TAC can increase [Ca]I, as measured by fluorescent live-cell imaging using Fluo-4.

Background/objectives: Despite strong evidence that breastfeeding, skin-to-skin care, and sucrose reduce pain in newborns during minor painful procedures, these interventions remain underutilized in practice. To address this knowledge-to-practice gap, we produced a five-minute parent-targeted video demonstrating the analgesic effects of these strategies and examined whether the use of newborn pain treatment increased in maternal-newborn care settings following the introduction of the video by nurses.
Methods: The design was a pre-post outcome evaluation.

Solid preconcentrated ore samples used in pyrometallurgical copper smelters are analyzed by flame emission spectroscopy using a specialized flame optical emission spectroscopy (OES), system. Over 8500 complex spectra are categorized using an artificial neural network (ANN) that was optimized to have 10 hidden layers with 40 nodes per layer. The ANN was able to quantify the elemental content of all samples to within better than 1.

Until quite recently, Conceptual DFT (CDFT) was mainly based on the energy functional, [,], where the number of electrons and the external potential are state variables. One of the strengths of CDFT, however, is the ease with which additional and/or different state variables can be incorporated. Here, the incorporation of new variables-namely temperature and external fields-is discussed, outlining the motivation for these extensions, sketching their theoretical/computational context, and presenting some elucidative examples.

In this narrative review, we explore the differences in processing speed (PS) impairments among three epilepsy conditions; Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE), Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (FLE) and Genetic Generalized Epilepsy (GGE) with a focus on Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME). Despite the large body of research focusing on cognition in epilepsy, the intricacies of PS impairments in the epilepsy syndromes have not been fully explored. We investigate the cognitive profiles with focus on PS associated with each of the three conditions, and the neuropsychological methods employed.

Demyelination disrupts the transmission of electrical signals in the brain and affects neurodevelopment in children with disorders such as multiple sclerosis and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-associated disorders. Although cognitive impairments are prevalent in these conditions, some children maintain cognitive function despite substantial structural injury. These findings raise an important question: in addition to the degenerative process, do compensatory neural mechanisms exist to mitigate the effects of myelin loss? We propose that a multi-dimensional approach integrating multiple neuroimaging modalities, including diffusion tensor imaging, magnetoencephalography and eye-tracking, is key to investigating this question.

We introduce the general mathematical framework of variational Hirshfeld partitioning, wherein the best possible approximation to a molecule's electron density is obtained by minimizing the -divergence between the molecular density and a non-negative linear combination of (normalized) basis functions. This framework subsumes several existing methods that variationally optimize their pro-atoms, like (Gaussian) iterative stockholder analysis (ISA and GISA) and minimal basis iterative stockholder partitioning (MBIS), and provides a solid foundation for developing mathematically rigorous partitioning schemes. In this paper, we delve into the mathematical underpinnings of Hirshfeld-inspired partitioning schemes and show that among all the valid -divergence measures only the extended Kullback-Leibler is a suitable choice.

, commonly known as rapeseed or canola, is an economically valuable oilseed crop grown throughout Canada that currently faces several challenges due to industrial farming practices as well as a changing climate. Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs) are key regulators of stress signaling in multiple plant species. CDPKs sense changes in cellular calcium levels via a calmodulin-like domain and are able to respond to these changes via their protein kinase domain.

RNA-based sample discrimination and classification can be used to provide biological insights and/or distinguish between clinical groups. However, finding informative differences between sample groups can be challenging due to the multidimensional and noisy nature of sequencing data. Here, we apply a machine learning approach for hierarchical discrimination and classification of samples with high-dimensional miRNA expression data.

Background: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease that affects millions of children and adults. There is a lack of objective gold standard diagnosis that spans the ages; instead, diagnoses are made by clinician assessment based on a cluster of signs, symptoms and objective tests dependent on age. Yet, there is a clear morbidity associated with chronic asthma symptoms.

In adults, liver-resident macrophages, or Kupffer cells (KCs), reside in the sinusoids and sterilize circulating blood by capturing rapidly flowing microbes. We developed quantitative intravital imaging of 1-day-old mice combined with transcriptomics, genetic manipulation, and in vivo infection assays to interrogate increased susceptibility of newborns to bloodstream infections. Whereas 1-day-old KCs were better at catching in vitro, we uncovered a critical 1-week window postpartum when KCs have limited access to blood and must translocate from liver parenchyma into the sinusoids.
