Urban nature-based solutions (actions that protect, sustainably manage, and restore ecosystems while simultaneously providing human wellbeing and biodiversity benefits) are being advocated for as multi-functional tools capable of tackling these societal challenges. Urban forest management is a proposed nature-based solution with potential to address both climate change mitigation and biodiversity loss along with multiple other benefits.

The self-assembly of CsPbCl perovskite nanocrystals and their Mn-enriched analogs into supercrystals is reported. Increasing Mn content in the nanocrystals leads to formation of larger, increasingly uniform cubic supercrystals that eventually become rod-like with higher photoluminescence quantum yields.

Theoretical work suggests that reinforcement can cause the strengthening of prezygotic isolation in sympatry by mitigating the costs of maladaptive hybridization. However, only a handful of studies have simultaneously tested multiple predictions of this theory in natural populations. We investigated reinforcement in a mottled hybrid zone between the damselflies Ischnura elegans and Ischnura graellsii, which are characterized by incomplete and asymmetric reproductive isolation and exhibit reproductive character displacement in mating-related structures.

Global monitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has intensified following regulatory efforts aimed at reducing their release. In this context, we compiled over 10,000 POP measurements, reported from 1980 to 2023, to assess the effectiveness of these legislative measures in the global marine environments. While a general decreasing trend in legacy POP concentrations is evident across various maritime regions, highlighting the success of source control measures, the Arctic Ocean and its marginal seas have experienced a rise in POP levels.

Emerging contaminants can be natural or synthetic materials, as well as materials of a chemical, or biological origin; these materials are typically not controlled or monitored in the environment. Canada is home to nearly 7 % of the world's renewable water supply and a wide range of different kinds of water systems, including the Great Lake, rivers, canals, gulfs, and estuaries. Although the majority of these pollutants are present in trace amounts (μg/L - ng/L concentrations), several studies have reported their detrimental impact on both human health and the biota.

α-l-(3'-2')-Threofuranosyl nucleic acid (TNA) pairs with itself, cross-pairs with DNA and RNA, and shows promise as a tool in synthetic genetics, diagnostics, and oligonucleotide therapeutics. We studied primer insertion and extension reactions catalyzed by human trans-lesion synthesis (TLS) DNA polymerase η (hPol η) opposite a TNA-modified template strand without and in combination with -alkyl thymine lesions. Across TNA-T (tT), hPol η inserted mostly dAMP and dGMP, dTMP and dCMP with lower efficiencies, followed by extension of the primer to a full-length product.

Endophytic fungi, as plant symbionts, produce an elaborate array of enzymes for efficient disintegration of lignocellulosic biomass into constituent monomeric sugars, making them novel source of lignocellulolytic CAZymes with immense potential in future biorefineries. The present study reports lignocellulolytic enzymes production potential of an endophytic halotolerant Penicillium oxalicum strain isolated from Citrus limon, under submerged and solid-state fermentation (SmF & SSF, respectively), in the presence and absence of salt (1 M NaCl). The comparative QTOF-LC/MS-based exoproteome analysis of the culture extracts unveiled differential expression of CAZymes, with the higher abundance of GH6 and GH7 family cellobiohydrolase in the presence of 1 M salt.

Because the offspring of parents with an affective disorder (OAD) are at high risk for developing mental disorders, and persons with an affective disorder (AD) show dysfunctional hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, changes in HPA functioning in OAD might be an etiological risk factor that precedes the development of ADs. The primary aim of the meta-analysis was to quantitatively summarize the existing data on different indices of diurnal cortisol in the OAD. The secondary aim was to explore potential moderators of this relation.

Cellular trafficking between organelles is typically assured by short motifs that contact carrier proteins to transport them to their destination. The ubiquitin E3 ligase RING finger protein 13 (RNF13), a regulator of proliferation, apoptosis and protein trafficking, localizes to endolysosomal compartments through the binding of a dileucine motif to clathrin adaptor protein complex AP-3. Mutations within this motif reduce the ability of RNF13 to interact with AP-3.

The current study is the first to describe the temporal and differential transcriptional expression of two lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO) genes of Rasamsonia emersonii in response to various carbon sources. The mass spectrometry based secretome analysis of carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZymes) expression in response to different carbon sources showed varying levels of LPMOs (AA9), AA3, AA7, catalase, and superoxide dismutase enzymes pointing toward the redox-interplay between the LPMOs and auxiliary enzymes. Moreover, it was observed that cello-oligosaccharides have a negative impact on the expression of LPMOs, which has not been highlighted in previous reports.

Coastal sediments are the main deposition center for allochthonous and autochthonous organic carbon (OC). The discharge of terrestrial biomass, anthropogenic activities, oceanic primary productivity, and natural events contribute to this carbon pool. The OC buried in sediments undergoes alteration through physical, biological and chemical processes, becoming progressively refractory and more likely to be preserved on geological time scales.

There are pronounced differences in the degree to which individuals experience music-induced pleasure which are linked to variations in structural connectivity between auditory and reward areas. However, previous studies exploring the link between white matter structure and music reward sensitivity (MRS) have relied on standard diffusion tensor imaging methods, which present challenges in terms of anatomical accuracy and interpretability. Further, the link between MRS and connectivity in regions outside of auditory-reward networks, as well as the role of musical training, have yet to be investigated.

Decrease in cognitive performance after sleep deprivation followed by recovery after sleep suggests its key role, and especially non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, in the maintenance of cognition. It remains unknown whether brain network reorganization in NREM sleep stages N2 and N3 can uniquely be mapped onto individual differences in cognitive performance after a recovery nap following sleep deprivation. Using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we quantified the integration and segregation of brain networks during NREM sleep stages N2 and N3 while participants took a 1-hour nap following 24-hour sleep deprivation, compared to well-rested wakefulness.

Objective: This study examined whether high frequency heart-rate variability (HF-HRV) and HF-HRV reactivity to worry moderate response to cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) within both a standard and stepped-care framework among cancer patients with comorbid insomnia. Recent advances in the treatment of chronic wounds have focused on the development of effective strategies for cutting-edge wound dressings based on nanostructured materials, particularly biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based electro-spun (e-spun) nanofibers. However, PVA nanofibers need to be chemically crosslinked to ensure their dimensional stability in aqueous environment and their capability to encapsulate bioactive molecules. The recent and exciting success of anti-inflammatory therapies for ischemic heart disease ( atherosclerosis) is hindered by the lack of site-specific and targeted therapeutic deposition. Microbubble-mediated focused ultrasound, which uses circulating, lipid-encapsulated intravascular microbubbles to locally enhance endothelial permeability, offers an exciting approach. Atherosclerotic plaques preferentially develop in regions with disturbed blood flow, and microbubble-endothelial cell membrane interactions under such flow conditions are not well understood.
