Shape morphing in bistable kirigami enables remarkable functionalities appealing to a diverse range of applications across the spectrum of length scale. At the core of their shape shifting lies the architecture of their repeating unit, where highly deformable slits and quasi-rigid rotating units often exhibit multiple symmetries that confer isotropic deployment obeying uniform scaling transformation. In this work, symmetry breaking in bistable kirigami is investigated to access geometric frustration and anisotropic morphing, enabling arbitrarily scaled deployment in planar and spatial bistable domains.

Flexible and stretchable heaters are increasingly recognized for their great potential in wearable thermotherapy to treat muscle spasms, joint injuries and arthritis. However, issues like lengthy processing, high fabrication cost, and toxic chemical involvement are obstacles on the way to popularize stretchable heaters for medical use. Herein, using a single-step customizable laser fabrication method, we put forward the design of cost-effective wearable laser-induced graphene (LIG) heaters with kirigami patterns, which offer multimodal stretchability and conformal fit to the skin around the human body.

Purpose: To test tough gel adhesives to repair meniscus tears under relevant loading conditions and determine if they have adequate biomechanical properties to repair meniscus tears in a bovine cadaveric study.
Methods: Cyclic compression tests on 24 dissected bovine knees were performed. The tough gel adhesive was used either as an adhesive patch or as a coating bonded onto commercially available surgical sutures.

Increasing seismic activity due to fluid injections for oil and gas production may be contributing to leakage along non-producing oil and gas wells and emitting methane, a potent greenhouse gas. However, the extent to which nearby seismicity may drive or exacerbate methane emissions and cause well integrity issues is unknown. Therefore, we analyze field evaluations at 448 non-producing oil and gas wells in Northeast British Columbia (NEBC) and geospatially analyze oil and gas well and fluid injection data alongside locations of 3515 earthquakes from 2001 to 2021 and 130 faults.

Foliar application of nutrient nanoparticles (NPs) is a promising strategy for improving fertilization efficiency in agriculture. Phloem translocation of NPs from leaves is required for efficient fertilization but is currently considered to be feasible only for NPs smaller than a cell wall pore size exclusion limit of <20 nm. Using mass spectrometry imaging, we provide here the first direct evidence for phloem localization and translocation of a larger (∼70 nm) fertilizer NP comprised of ZnO encapsulated in mesoporous SiO (ZnO@MSN) following foliar deposition.

Since aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) are major sources of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), understanding the quantity and type of PFAS present in AFFFs is crucial for assessing environmental risk and remediation. We characterized 25 foams from Canada and Europe, including two non-AFFFs and two fluorine-free AFFFs. We used liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) to identify novel PFAS, as well as total oxidizable precursor assays (TOP) and total organofluorine (TOF) measurements for comparison.

Abandoned oil and gas wells can act as leakage pathways for methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and other fluids to migrate through the subsurface and to the atmosphere. National estimates of methane emissions remain highly uncertain, and available measurements do not provide details on whether the emissions are associated with well integrity failure (indicating subsurface leaks) or aboveground well infrastructure leaks. Therefore, we directly measured methane emission rates from 238 unplugged and plugged abandoned wells across Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, separately quantified emissions from surface casing vents and other emissions from the wellhead (non-surface casing vent), and developed emission factors to estimate Canada-wide emissions from abandoned wells.

A human aorta from a female donor affected by Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome was retrieved during a surgery for organ donation for transplant. The aorta was preserved in refrigerated Belzer UW organ preservation solution and tested within a few hours for mechanical characterization with and without vascular smooth muscle activation. KCl and Noradrenaline were used as vasoactive agents in bubbled Krebs-Henseleit buffer solution at 37 °C.

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) make up a group of anthropogenic chemicals with a myriad of applications. However, some PFAS have been shown to negatively impact human health and the environment, leading to increased regulation, with some countries making efforts to phase out their use. PFAS fate in the environment is driven by physical, chemical, and biological processes, with microbial communities in matrices such as soil and sewage sludge being known to generate a range of low-molecular-weight PFAS metabolites.

Rapid biodegradation of poorly water-soluble hydrocarbons as nonaqueous (oil) phases in contaminated aquatic environments is enabled by attachment of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria to the oil-water interface. Herein, we report the synthesis of nanoparticles comprising a hydroxyapatite (Ca(PO)(OH)) core encapsulated in a mesoporous silica shell and surface-modified with oleic acid (OA-nHAP@MSN) for targeted binding at the oil-water interface and to supply P to bacteria at the interface. P is an essential and often limiting nutrient for bacteria in hydrocarbon-contaminated environments.
