During the COVID-19 pandemic, the monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater was used to track the evolution and emergence of variant lineages and gauge infection levels in the community, informing appropriate public health responses without relying solely on clinical testing. As more sublineages were discovered, it increased the difficulty in identifying distinct variants in a mixed population sample, particularly those without a known lineage. Here, we compare the sequencing technology from Illumina and from Oxford Nanopore Technologies, in order to determine their efficacy at detecting variants of differing abundance, using 248 wastewater samples from various Quebec and Ontario cities.

Output-only modal analysis using ambient vibration testing is ubiquitous for the monitoring of structural systems, especially for civil engineering structures such as buildings and bridges. Nonetheless, the instrumented nodes for large-scale structural systems need to cover a significant portion of the spatial volume of the test structure to obtain accurate global modal information. This requires considerable time and resources, which can be challenging in large-scale projects, such as the seismic vulnerability assessment over a large number of facilities.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are associated with micropores in sediments and soils. This limits the bioaccessibility of these compounds via existing bioremediation technologies, as biodegradation is strongly influenced by the ability of bacteria to access different sizes of pores. In this work, we employed naphthalene and pyrene as model contaminants to evaluate the transformation capacity of the soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida G7 (2 × 1 μm) via mineralization and co-metabolic activity, respectively.

Composite Hydrogel Sealants for Annulus Fibrosus Repair.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

August 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, McGill University, 817 Sherbrooke St W, Montreal, Quebec H3A 0C3, Canada.

Intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation is a leading cause of disability and lower back pain, causing enormous socioeconomic burdens. The standard of care for disc herniation is nucleotomy, which alleviates pain but does not repair the annulus fibrosus (AF) defect nor recover the biomechanical function of the disc. Existing bioadhesives for AF repair are limited by insufficient adhesion and significant mechanical and geometrical mismatch with the AF tissue, resulting in the recurrence of protrusion or detachment of bioadhesives.

Shape morphing in bistable kirigami enables remarkable functionalities appealing to a diverse range of applications across the spectrum of length scale. At the core of their shape shifting lies the architecture of their repeating unit, where highly deformable slits and quasi-rigid rotating units often exhibit multiple symmetries that confer isotropic deployment obeying uniform scaling transformation. In this work, symmetry breaking in bistable kirigami is investigated to access geometric frustration and anisotropic morphing, enabling arbitrarily scaled deployment in planar and spatial bistable domains.
