The hippocampus, essential for cognitive and affective processes, develops exponentially with differential trajectories seen in girls and boys, yet less is known about its development during early fetal life until early childhood. In a cross-sectional and longitudinal study, we examined the sex-, age-, and laterality-related developmental trajectories of hippocampal volumes in fetuses, infants, and toddlers associated with age. Third trimester fetuses (27-38 weeks' gestational age), newborns (0-4 weeks' postnatal age), infants (5-50 weeks' postnatal age), and toddlers (2-3 years postnatal age) were scanned with magnetic resonance imaging.

Polymorphisms in genes of melatonin biosynthesis and signaling support the light-at-night hypothesis for breast cancer.

Eur J Epidemiol

October 2023

Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine of the German Social Accident Insurance, Institute of the Ruhr University Bochum (IPA), Bürkle-de-la-Camp-Platz 1, 44789, Bochum, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Light-at-night exposure is linked to decreased melatonin production from the pineal gland and is considered a potential risk factor for breast cancer by the IARC.
  • A study of 44,405 women examined the relationship between breast cancer risk and genetic variations (SNPs) associated with melatonin synthesis and signaling, using logistic regression for analysis.
  • Significant findings included 10 SNPs in the TPH2 gene and one in the MAPK8 gene, suggesting that these genetic factors may influence breast cancer risk, particularly in relation to circadian disruptions caused by light exposure at night.

Biomechanics researchers often experimentally measure static or fluctuating dynamic contact forces, areas, and stresses at the interface of natural and artificial joints, including the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. This information helps explain joint contact mechanics, as well as mechanisms that may contribute to disease, damage, and degradation. Currently, the most common in vitro experimental technique involves a thin pressure-sensitive film inserted into the joint space; but, the film's finite thickness disturbs the joint's ordinary articulation.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study analyzing 165 multiple myeloma (MM) patients found that those who developed second primary malignancies (SPMs), particularly hematological ones, generally had a shorter survival time and were more likely to have had previous cancer treatments.
  • - Patients with hematological SPMs tended to be younger and had a higher rate of prior autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation, with treatment often stopped upon SPM detection, especially in cases of hemato-SPM.
  • - Overall survival (OS) post-SPM detection was only 8.5 months, with the main cause of death being the SPM; hence, regular monitoring and early intervention are crucial for improving patient outcomes.
