Background: Both glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) have been shown to improve glycated hemoglobin A1c (A1c) levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Recently, a US real-world study found statistically significant improvements in A1c levels among patients using GLP-1 RA and a CGM device, compared with a matched cohort receiving only GLP-1 RA.

Objectives: To assess the cost-effectiveness from a US payer perspective of initiating CGM (FreeStyle Libre Systems) in people living with T2DM using a GLP-1 RA therapy, compared with GLP-1 RA alone.

Polycystic kidney diseases (PKD) are genetic disorders which disrupt kidney architecture and function. Autosomal recessive PKD (ARPKD) is a rare form of PKD, caused by mutations in PKHD1, and clinically more severe than the more common autosomal dominant PKD (ADPKD). Prior studies have implicated Hedgehog (Hh) signaling in ADPKD, with increased levels of Hh components in experimental ADPKD and reduced cystogenesis following pharmacological Hh inhibition.

Dental resin-based restorative (RBR) materials represent the most ubiquitous biomaterials utilized globally. Methacrylate (MA)-ester based monomers - present in RBRs since the 1960s - experience significantly elevated rates of failure compared to previously used silver/amalgam fillings attributed to their hydrolysis reported in both simulated and in vivo environments. There is currently no alternative RBR chemistry that matches the functional and clinical workflow considerations of MA-RBRs while addressing their limited-service lives.

Spasticity affects up to 80% of individuals with cerebral palsy and can lead to pain and difficulties with performing activities of daily living. If left untreated, spasticity can progress to contracture and neuro-orthopedic deformities. Cryoneurolysis is an emerging and mini-invasive ultrasound-guided technique that causes secondary axonotmesis of peripheral nerves through the formation of an ice ball and may result in months to years of improved range of motion and reduced pain in patients with spasticity.

Development of national post-fire restoration system to assess net GHG impacts and salvage biomass availability.

MethodsX

December 2024

Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Forest Service, 506 Burnside Road West, Victoria, BC, V8Z1M5, Canada.

In light of the recent unprecedented wildfires in Canada and the potential for increasing burned areas in the future, there is a need to explore post-fire salvage harvest and restoration and the implications for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Salvage logging and replanting initiatives offer a potential solution by regrowing forests more quickly while meeting societal demands for wood and bioenergy. This study presents a comprehensive modeling framework to estimate post-fire salvage biomass and net GHG emissions relative to a 'do-nothing' baseline for all of Canada's harvest-eligible forests.

Left atrial myxoma is the most prevalent primary cardiac tumor, known for its high risk of systemic embolization. Although surgical excision remains the standard treatment, options are limited for high-risk patients. This case report introduces a novel approach using transcatheter electrosurgery to address a left atrial myxoma via a transseptal approach in a patient ineligible for conventional surgery due to the heightened risk of intracranial hemorrhage associated with cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in Patients With Interventricular Membranous Septal Aneurysms.

JACC Case Rep

January 2025

Interventional Cardiology Section, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California, USA.

Aneurysms of the interventricular membranous septum are a rare anatomical feature that can be detected incidentally on computed tomography or echocardiography. Such aneurysms can pose challenges in the treatment of patients with aortic valve stenosis. A case series of 2 patients with membranous septal aneurysms treated successfully with current-generation balloon-expandable and self-expanding transcatheter heart valves is presented here.

Chronic Radium-226 toxicity to and oxidative stress in the aquatic invertebrate .

Toxicol Res (Camb)

February 2025

Toxicology Centre, University of Saskatchewan, 44 Campus Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7N 5B3, Canada.

The mining industry, including uranium mining and milling, is of high importance in Canada. It is, however, important to consider that ore processing can result in the creation of by-products that contain radionuclides such as radium-226 (Ra). Even with the strict discharge regulations in place, there is limited evidence to suggest that the current Canadian regulatory thresholds for Ra are protective for aquatic life.
