A novel blue-green infrastructure for providing potential drinking water source from urban stormwater through a sustainable physical-biological treatment.

In this research, a sustainable blue-green infrastructure (BGI) was developed to efficiently remove contaminants from stormwater through a combined use of modified porous asphalt (PA) and microalgae cultivation to provide a potential drinking water (DW) source. According to the results, the modified PA with powder activated carbon (PAC) could successfully reduce the level of total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oil and grease to below the DW standards but failed to efficiently remove some heavy metals (HMs) and nutrient pollutants. The results revealed that the treated stormwater was an appropriate medium for microalgae cultivation.

Extreme air pollution poses global health and environmental threats, necessitating robust policy interventions. This study first analyses the surface mass concentration of major aerosols (such as black carbon, organic carbon, dust, sea salts, and sulphates) to estimate global PM concentrations from 1980 to 2023. The developed model-estimated PM database was validated against data from 526 cities worldwide, showing strong accuracy, with RMSE, r, and R values of 7.

Accessible vaccine information is one vital component of effective vaccination programs, however, there is limited research that explores how people with disabilities engage with public health messaging. This study aimed to understand how adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their caregivers navigated Canada's public health communications regarding COVID-19 vaccines. A national survey on the accessibility of vaccine information was conducted in the spring and summer of 2022.

Robust, fully-automated assessment of cerebral perivascular spaces and white matter lesions: a multicentre MRI longitudinal study of their evolution and association with risk of dementia and accelerated brain atrophy.

Background: Perivascular spaces (PVS) on brain MRI are surrogates for small parenchymal blood vessels and their perivascular compartment, and may relate to brain health. However, it is unknown whether PVS can predict dementia risk and brain atrophy trajectories in participants without dementia, as longitudinal studies on PVS are scarce and current methods for PVS assessment lack robustness and inter-scanner reproducibility.

Methods: We developed a robust algorithm to automatically assess PVS count and size on clinical MRI, and investigated 1) their relationship with dementia risk and brain atrophy in participants without dementia, 2) their longitudinal evolution, and 3) their potential use as a screening tool in simulated clinical trials.

Methods: Data were gathered from the general population of Quebec, Canada, using the standardized valuation protocol developed by EuroQol for the cTTO and DCE tasks, as well as the valuation protocol developed by Sheffield University for the SG. A microanalytical technique based on the photothermal effect in conjunction with back-scattering interferometry (BSI) using a single laser beam was developed for quantitative detection of heavy metals. After the chromogenic reaction of an analyte in a capillary tube, the photothermal effect induced by irradiation with the same laser beam leads to a change of the refractive index of the solution, which can be "quantified" using the BSI technique. For prove-of-concept, Cu(II) was chosen as the trial analyte, for which the solution changes to purplish through reacting with the chromogenic reagent; a single laser beam of 532 nm was adapted for both inducing the photothermal effect and realizing BSI detection.

Cell therapy with human IL-10-producing ILC2s limits xenogeneic graft-versus-host disease by inhibiting pathogenic T cell responses.

Interleukin-10 (IL-10)-producing group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) regulate inflammatory immune responses, yet their therapeutic potential remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that cell therapy with human ILC2 inhibits pathogenic T cell responses in humanized mouse models of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), resulting in reduced GVHD severity and improved overall survival without limiting the graft-versus-leukemia effect. ILC2 conferred superior protection from GVHD than IL-10 ILC2s, and blocking IL-10 and IL-4 abrogated ILC2 protective effects, indicating that these cytokines are important for the protective effects of ILC2.

Urothelial carcinoma in situ with "early papillary formation" vs "lateral spread/shoulder lesion" of prior high-grade noninvasive papillary urothelial carcinoma: A survey of pathologist and urologist interpretations.

Objectives: Urothelial carcinoma in situ (CIS) with early papillary formation is terminology sometimes used to suggest incipient high-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma (PUC) but may lead to confusion between true CIS and lateral flat spread of PUC.

Methods: It remains unclear how pathologists and urologists interpret this scenario, so a survey was circulated to 68 pathologists (group 1 = 28 academic genitourinary pathologists; group 2 = 17 pathologists with a self-reported genitourinary focus; group 3 = 23 pathologists self-reported as not genitourinary specialists) and 32 urologists.

Results: Regarding atypical urothelial lesions that appear mainly flat but contain possible papillae, group 3 was more likely to label this as CIS compared with groups 1 and 2 (35% for group 3 vs 13% for groups 1 and 2), while groups 1 and 2 more often adopted another descriptive diagnosis, such as "CIS with early papillary features" (38% for groups 1 and 2 vs 13% for group 3).
