The TRIM-NHL RNA-binding protein MEI-P26 modulates the size of Drosophila Type I neuroblast lineages.

The Drosophila TRIM-NHL RNA-binding protein (RBP), MEI-P26, has previously been shown to suppress tumor formation in the germline. Here we show that, in the Drosophila larval central brain, cell-type specific expression of MEI-P26 plays a vital role in regulating neural development. MEI-P26 and another TRIM-NHL RBP, Brain tumor (BRAT), have distinct expression patterns in Type I neuroblast (NB) lineages: While both proteins are expressed in NBs, BRAT is expressed in ganglion mother cells (GMCs) but not neurons whereas MEI-P26 is expressed in neurons but not GMCs.

Reference Values for Water-Specific T1, Intermuscular and Intramuscular Fat Content in Skeletal Muscle at 2.89 T.

Background: MRI offers quantification of proton density fat fraction (PDFF) and tissue characteristics with T1 mapping. The influence of age, sex, and the potential confounding effects of fat on T1 values in skeletal muscle in healthy adults are insufficiently known.

Purpose: To determine the accuracy and repeatability of a saturation-recovery chemical-shift encoded multiparametric approach (SR-CSE) for quantification of T1 and muscle fat content, and establish normative values (age, sex) from a healthy cohort.

Young, female and scientist: exploring barriers, challenges and opportunities.

Different societal, systemic and personal barriers exist at various stages along a female researcher's career that can potentially undermine their success. The equation for women to reach higher positions in STEM is a multivariable one, and while there has been considerable progress towards addressing some of these compared with the past, current solutions are inadequate and do not address all facets. Here, we asked female winners of the FEBS Open Bio poster prize about their experiences regarding barriers they have faced at the predoctoral and postdoctoral stages, their opinions on how these can be addressed and their advice to new students entering a PhD degree.

Lipreading as a communication strategy to enhance speech recognition in individuals with hearing impairment: a scoping review.

This article explores the existing research evidence on the potential effectiveness of lipreading as a communication strategy to enhance speech recognition in individuals with hearing impairment. A scoping review was conducted, involving a search of six electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Engineering Village, CINAHL, and PsycINFO) for research papers published between January 2013 and June 2023. This study included original research papers with full texts available in English, covering all study designs: qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods.

Enantioselective Decarboxylative Mannich Reactions of α,β-Unsaturated β'-Ketoacids and Isatin Imines: Application in the Synthesis of Spiro[indoline-3,2'-piperidine]-2,4'-diones.

Organocatalytic, enantioselective decarboxylative Mannich reactions of α,β-unsaturated β'-ketoacids and isatin -Boc imines, to give the corresponding 3-carbamoyl-2-oxindole derivatives, were developed. Subsequent N-deprotection and diastereoselective, intramolecular, aza-Michael reaction of the free amine provides previously unreported spiro[indoline-3,2'-piperidine]-2,4'-diones.

Maternal-Newborn ABO Blood Group Congruence Among Consecutive Births and Risk of Serious Neonatal Infection: Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Differing ABO blood groups between a mother and her fetus may confer a lower risk of serious neonatal infection. How sensitization in the first pregnancy influences this phenomenon in a subsequent pregnancy is unclear. Accordingly, this study determined whether maternal-newborn ABO blood group incongruence in a first pregnancy further modifies the risk of serious infection in a subsequent pregnancy marked by ABO incongruency.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environmental tobacco smoke and wood stoves dominate in settled house dust from Northwestern Ontario First Nations communities.

Rates of respiratory tract infections for children living in remote First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout Zone in Northwestern Ontario are elevated and associated with poor indoor environmental quality including high exposures to endotoxin and serious dampness and mould damage. The studies also revealed a high prevalence of cigarette smoking and most houses have wood stoves, of variable quality. Depending on structure, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are carcinogens, immunotoxins and/or inflammatory mediators that are byproducts of the incomplete combustion of organic materials.

Protective effects of neutrophil serine protease inhibition against ischemia-reperfusion injury in lung or heart transplantation.

Transplanted organs are inevitably exposed to ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury, which is known to cause graft dysfunction. Functional and structural changes that follow IR tissue injury are mediated by neutrophils through the production of oxygen-derived free radicals, as well as from degranulation which entails the release of proteases and other pro-inflammatory mediators. Neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs) are believed to be the principal triggers of post-ischemic reperfusion damage.

Ultrasound Evaluation of Upper Limb Sublesional Muscle Morphology in Cervical Spinal Cord Injury.

Introduction/aims: Upper limb paralysis is arguably the most limiting consequence of cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI). There is limited knowledge regarding the early structural changes of muscles implicated in grasp/pinch function and upper extremity nerve transfer surgeries. We evaluated: (1) muscle size and echo intensity (EI) in subacute cSCI (2-6 months) and (2) the influence of lower motor neuron (LMN) damage on these ultrasound parameters.

Background: Gamification refers to using game design elements in nongame contexts. Promoting physical activity (PA) through gamification is a novel and promising avenue for improving lifestyles and mitigating the advancement of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, evidence of its effectiveness remains mixed.

Thoracic Electric Impedance Tomography Detects Lung Volume Changes in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Introduction/aims: Spirometry is the conventional means to measure lung function in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but is dependent on patient effort and bulbar strength. We aimed to use electric impedance tomography (EIT), an emerging non-invasive imaging modality, to measure dynamic lung volume changes.

Methods: Twenty-one patients with ALS underwent sitting and supine spirometry for forced vital capacity (FVC), and sitting and supine EIT.

Kelp forests are among the most abundant and productive marine ecosystems but are under threat from climate change and other anthropogenic stressors. Although knowledge is growing about how the abundance and distribution of kelp forests are changing, much less is known about the "non-lethal" effects that global change is having on the performance and health of kelp populations in areas where they persist. Here we assessed the age distribution of two common stipitate kelp species, Laminaria setchelli and Pterygophora californica, at Wizard Islet in Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada, and compared these data to historical demographic data collected by De Wreede (1984) and Klinger and DeWreede (1988) from the same site between 1981 and 1983.

Disco-Interacting Protein 2 Homolog B CGG Repeat Expansion in Siblings with Neurodevelopmental Disability and Progressive Movement Disorder.

Background: Trinucleotide repeat expansions are an emerging class of genetic variants associated with various movement disorders. Unbiased genome-wide analyses can reveal novel genotype-phenotype associations and provide a diagnosis for patients and families.

Objective: The aim was to identify the genetic cause of a severe progressive movement disorder phenotype in 2 affected brothers.

Examining the influence of encoding and retrieval contexts on 2- to 4-year-olds' acquisition of nouns and verbs.

This study investigates whether the context in which a word is learnt affects noun and verb learning. There is mixed evidence in studies of noun learning, and no studies of background perceptual context in verb learning. Two-, three-, and four-year-olds (n = 162) saw a novel object moved in a novel way while hearing four novel words, either nouns or verbs.

Impact of Long Well Screens on Monitoring of the Freshwater-Saltwater Transition Zone.

Deep monitoring wells with long screens crossing the transition zone between freshwater and saltwater are often used in coastal areas to characterize fresh groundwater resources and the depth of saline groundwater. However, past studies have demonstrated that long-screen wells can lead to biased observations of the transition zone, since vertical flow within the borehole can modify the shape and elevation of the transition zone in and around the borehole compared to undisturbed conditions without a well. Here, field observations and variable-density numerical flow simulations are used to evaluate, under natural flow conditions, how the installation of long-screen wells can provide time-varying biased observations of the freshwater-saltwater transition zone, and how various aquifer and well parameters affect the magnitude of these biases.

Toward Equitable Access to Psychosocial Screening in Canada: Validation of the French-Canadian Psychosocial Assessment Tool.

Objective: The Psychosocial Assessment Tool (PAT) is a brief caregiver report, family-centered, psychosocial risk screening tool widely used in pediatrics and available in many languages. Although French is an official language of Canada, a French-Canadian version of the PAT has not yet been validated, which impedes access to this tool for family psychosocial screening. This study aimed to translate, adapt as necessary, and validate the French-Canadian version of the PAT.

Severe forms of vascular malformations (VM) can highly impact patients' quality of life and lead to life-threatening organ dysfunction. Numerous VM are caused by somatic activating mutations in the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling pathway. Alpelisib, a PIK3CA inhibitor was recently FDA-approved for paediatric PIK3CA-related overgrowth syndrome (PROS).

Importance: Neonatal protein intake following very preterm birth has long lasting effects on brain development. However, it is uncertain whether these effects are associated with improved or impaired brain maturation.

Objective: To assess the association of neonatal protein intake following very preterm birth with brain structure at 7 years of age.

Performance-Based Outcome Measures After Hip or Knee Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review and Content Analysis Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).

Rational: One of the important considerations to select the appropriate outcome measures is determining if the tool is relevant to patients. Despite the availability of various performance-based tests to objectively assess function, it is unknown which performance-based tests best capture important aspects of function after hip or knee arthroplasty.

Aims And Objectives: Our systematic review aimed to identify the existing performance-based tests used in hip or knee arthroplasty and link the activity component of each test to the modified International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) core set for osteoarthritis (OA).
