Background: Laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) is commonly used for hepatolithiasis and/or choledocholithiasis, but the ideal method for common bile duct closure remains uncertain, especially for elderly patients (≥65 years). This study compared outcomes of primary closure versus T-tube drainage following LCBDE in elderly patients.

Methods: Data from elderly patients undergoing LCBDE for hepatolithiasis and/or choledocholithiasis between May 2016 and December 2020 at two Vietnamese hospitals were analyzed.

  • Class III malocclusion is challenging to treat, often requiring maxillary protraction to address underlying maxillary retrognathia.
  • A 16-year-old Vietnamese girl exhibited severe anterior crossbite and Class III malocclusion, characterized by a prognathic mandible and retrognathic maxilla, without any noted medical issues.
  • The recommended treatment involved using multiloop edgewise archwire (MEAW) alongside temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and modified Class III elastics, offering a non-surgical camouflage therapy for this condition.

Context: While the pure Au cluster tends to exist in a 3D cage shape, the doubly doped W@Au is found to prefer a tubular form containing three five-membered Au rings stabilized by the W dimer vertically placed inside a tube-like Au framework. Formation of self-assembled nanotubes containing five-membered Au rings from the tube-like W@Au cluster is also feasible, and such a tubular structure constitutes an ideal building block for generating gold-assembled nanotubes, providing us with a useful approach for designing some novel tailor-made materials with interesting optoelectronic properties.

Methods: Density functional theory (DFT) calculations using the TPSS functional and the cc-pVDZ-PP basis set are employed to determine some noticeable effects of the doping of the W dimer on the structure, stability, and optical properties of pure Au16 gold clusters.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined factors linked to non-revascularization and mortality in patients with TASC II A/B iliac artery occlusions who underwent endovascular interventions from October 2016 to September 2020.
  • Researchers assessed 133 patients and found significant links between non-revascularization and conditions like diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and severe calcifications, highlighting these as critical risk factors.
  • The study concluded that identifying these factors could improve patient outcomes and suggested the need for further research to understand the underlying mechanisms and develop risk mitigation strategies.

Value of transabdominal ultrasonography for diagnosing functional constipation in children: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Clin Exp Pediatr

November 2024

Center of Excellence in Thai Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Immunology (TPGHAI), Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Pediatrics, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Transabdominal ultrasonography is increasingly used as a novel modality for detecting pediatric functional constipation (FC). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the diagnostic parameters of FC including rectal diameter (RD) and anterior rectal wall thickness. A systematic search was conducted of the Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, and PubMed databases through September 29, 2023, to identify studies comparing RD and anterior wall thickness using transabdominal ultrasonography in children with versus without FC.

Diclofenac has a relatively low oral bioavailability (50-60 %) and is quickly metabolized with a half-life of less than 1 h. Therefore, the oral therapeutic effect of diclofenac is not optimal. This research developed polyvinylpyrrolidone K30-functionalized silk fibroin nanoparticles as an effective delivery system for diclofenac (FNPs-PVP-DC).

has a wide range of distribution, from brackish to freshwater water, ranging from India to the Philippines and Fiji, including the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), where it lives mainly in the coastal regions and plays a vital role in food supply. Our preliminary observation showed that its population tended to decline, but little is known about this species. This study, therefore, was conducted to provide data on the ovarian structure, spawning pattern and season, length at first maturity, and batch fecundity of this fish.

-cinnamoyltyramine (NTCT) has been identified from an allelopathic Vietnamese rice accession OM 5930. This study employed bioassays to analyze NTCT's effects on shoot and root growth of multiple test and weed species. NTCT demonstrated potent inhibitory effects on cress, lettuce, canola, palmer amaranth, timothy, barnyardgrass, red sprangletop, and weedy rice, with increasing concentrations leading to substantial reductions in growth in all species.

An efficient method to construct 4-phenyl-4-hydroxyquinazolin-2-thiones 3 solvent-free and catalyst-free addition of -aminobenzophenone 1 with aryl isothiocyanates 2 under thermal conditions has been developed, providing new congested 4-phenyl-4-hydroxyquinazolin-2-thiones 3 in practically quantitative yields simple purification by filtration/recrystallization. Extension of these conditions to -aminoacetophenone 4 in place of -aminobenzophenone 1 led to 4-methylenequinazoline-thione 5 as a result of a subsequent dehydration reaction.

Article Synopsis
  • Cigarette smoking is a major cause of death globally and has been shown to increase the infectivity of Streptococcus pneumoniae, a harmful bacteria that often affects the respiratory system.
  • This study utilized cigarette smoke extract (CSE) to examine how it impacts the innate immune response, specifically in mouse macrophage models.
  • Findings revealed that CSE exposure reduces the production of key immune signaling molecules and disrupts macrophage functions, ultimately weakening the body's defense against pneumococcal infections.

Pollution Mitigation in Vermicelli Wastewater: Integrated Fenton and Aerobic Sludge Treatment for Water Quality Improvement.

Scientifica (Cairo)

October 2024

Department of Ecosystem Studies, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo 113-0032, Japan.

Vermicelli production generates wastewater that is rich in organic and nutrient pollutants, which poses significant environmental challenges. Conventional biological treatments, either alone or in combination with other methods, often fail to achieve high efficiency and operational stability. This study explored the potential of the Fenton process, followed by aerobic activated sludge treatment, to enhance the biodegradability and mineralization of organic substances in vermicelli wastewater.
