Plant age-dependent dynamics of annatto pigment (bixin) biosynthesis in Bixa orellana.

J Exp Bot

February 2024

Departamento de Ciências Biológicas, Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz, 13418-900 Piracicaba, SP, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Age affects how plants produce secondary metabolites, which are important for industries, particularly focusing on bixin from the achiote tree.
  • In a study, researchers overexpressed a specific microRNA (miR156) in annatto plants, leading to reduced gene expression for bixin production and changes in leaf development.
  • The results highlight the role of the miR156-SPL module in controlling bixin biosynthesis and suggest potential strategies for improving bixin yield in breeding efforts.

Supported decision-making for older people living with dementia: contributions from bioethics.

Cien Saude Colet

November 2023

Centro Internacional de Bioética e Humanidades, UnB. Brasília DF Brasil.

The significant increase in the elderly population and the high incidence of chronic and degenerative diseases are a matter of concern with regard to issues inherent to promotion of autonomy and preservation of human rights and quality of life in this population group. Exercising the right to make a decision impacts various aspects of human life, such as health care, asset management, relationships, choice of housing, family care, religious activities and even daily routine activities. Supported decision-making (SDM) can be an important tool for promoting autonomy among elderly people living with dementia, as it consists of an approach based on respect for human rights, in which the aim is to establish control over the mechanisms for provision of support so that all people can exercise the right to make decisions inherent to their lives.

Soil δN spatial distribution is primarily shaped by climatic patterns in the semiarid Caatinga, Northeast Brazil.

Sci Total Environ

January 2024

Universidade de São Paulo, FFCLRP, Departamento de Biologia, Av. dos Bandeirantes, 3900, Monte Alegre, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Soil nitrogen isotopic composition (δN) is an invaluable tool as it integrates nitrogen (N) transformations in soils. In addition to serving as a baseline to understand the N cycle, spatial representations of δN across landscapes (or isoscapes) is a multi-purpose tool useful to investigate, for example, plant-microbe interactions, animal migration and forensics. We investigate the climatic and edaphic controls of δN utilising data from 29 geographical locations sampled across the semiarid Brazilian Caatinga biome.

The discovery rate of new plant viruses has increased due to studies involving high-throughput sequencing (HTS), particularly for single-stranded DNA viruses of the family Genomoviridae. We carried out an HTS-based survey of genomoviruses in a wide range of native and exotic trees grown in the Brazilian Cerrado biome, and the complete genome sequences of two novel members of the family Genomoviridae from two distinct genera were determined. Specific primers were designed to detect these genomoviruses in individual samples.

Functional chromophores synthesized via multicomponent Reactions: A review on their use as cell-imaging probes.

Methods

December 2023

Laboratory of Medicinal and Technological Chemistry, University of Brasília, Chemistry Institute (IQ-UnB), Campus Universitário Darcy Ribeiro, Brasília, Distrito Federal 70910-900, Brazil.

This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements and applications of fluorescence imaging probes synthesized via MCRs (multicomponent reactions). These probes, also known as functional chromophores, belong to a currently investigated class of fluorophores that are presently being successfully applied in bioimaging experiments, especially in various living cell lineages. We describe some of the MCRs that have been employed in the synthesis of these probes and explore their applications in biological imaging, with an emphasis on cellular imaging.

The emission of nitrous oxide (NO), one of the main greenhouse gases, which contributes significantly to global warming, is a major challenge in modern agriculture. The effects of land use systems on NO emissions are the result of multiple variables, whose interactions need to be better understood. In this sense, this study analyzed the possible effects of different soil managements, crop rotations and sequences, as well as edaphoclimatic factors causing NO emissions from soils in the Cerrado biome (scrubland).

Laboratório de Ciências Ambientais, Centro de Biociências e Biotecnologia, Universidade Estadual Do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro. Avenida Alberto Lamego, 2000, Parque Califórnia, Campos Dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, CEP: 28.013-602, Brazil.

In this study, we measured Ni, Co, Cd, and Pb concentrations in the whole blood of farmers from southeast Brazil to address the factors influencing human exposure in this population. The factors included smoking, alcohol consumption, aging, body composition, gender, and feeding preferences, which were measured through carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition. We also calculated and compared the reference values (RVs) of the measured elements to evaluate ongoing exposure levels.

Article Synopsis
  • Alopecia areata is treated with oral corticosteroids, but a study explores using nanoparticles to deliver minoxidil and betamethasone topically to reduce side effects.
  • Researchers created polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) that held high percentages of both drugs, with similar sizes ranging from 414 to 567 nm.
  • In testing, NLCs significantly enhanced minoxidil penetration into hair follicles and delivered more betamethasone than PNPs, indicating that while both nanoparticles are effective for targeting, NLCs perform better for lipophilic drugs.

Fatty acids (FAs) stored as triacylglycerols (TAGs) are an important source of carbon and energy for germination and seedling development, particularly for plants with small wind-dispersed seeds, allowing greater efficiency in storing both energy and carbon. These plants should be under strong selection to produce seeds rich in FAs and with large amounts of saturated FAs. Their closely packed single-chain configuration allows greater packing, more carbon and energy per unit mass, and are less costly to produce.

The world's population is currently growing at an exponential rate, which is estimated to be over 8 billion inhabitants as reported by United Nations on November 15, 2022. According to FAO, 870 million people out of this population do not have enough food to eat, with the vast majority of hungry people (98%) living in developing countries, where almost 15% of the population is undernourished. Furthermore, the world's population is estimated to come to 9 billion by 2050, which would incur severe food scarcity and would seriously hamper global food security.
