Polar marine macroalgae thrive in extreme conditions, often displaying geographic isolation and high degree of endemism. The "phycosphere" refers to the zone around the algae inhabited by microrganisms. Our study used DNA metabarcoding to survey the eukaryotic communities associated with seven seaweed species obtained at King George Island (South Shetland Islands, maritime Antarctic), including two Rhodophyta, two Chlorophyta and three Phaeophyceae.

The exploration of extraterrestrial environments has become a focal point of scientific inquiry, driven by advancements in technology and a growing interest in the potential for life beyond Earth. This study investigates the adaptability of Antarctic nematodes, known for thriving in extreme cold and isolation, to simulated Martian (MGS-1) and Lunar (LMS-1) soils. The experiment revealed differential responses in nematode survivability to the two simulants, with Lunar soil demonstrating better adaptability compared to Martian soil.

Seaweeds are natural sources of sulfated polysaccharides (SPs), biopolymers with remarkable pharmacological properties, including biological actions capable of attenuating components of the inflammatory process such as edema, cytokines, cell migration and pain. Our results confirm that SPs obtained from Gracilaria domingensis (SP-GD) are agarans, primarily composed of residues of β-d-galactopyranose 6-sulfate and 3,6-anhydro-α-l-galactopyranose. Specifically, SP-GD at a dose of 10 mg/kg was effective in significantly reducing paw edema induced by carrageenan or histamine, serotonin, bradykinin, 48/80 and prostaglandin E2.

The global impact of the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) pandemic in 2019-2020 has led to significant changes in worldwide vaccination and immune prophylactic approaches. In this study, our research delves into a new immunization strategy that does not involve the use of additional adjuvants or preservatives, focusing on the effects of virus fusion with a bacterial nanostructure. The experimental procedures outlined in this paper involved the cultivation of SARS-CoV-2, the production, extraction, and nanocharacterization of outer membrane vesicles (OMV) from Neisseria meningitidis, immunization of mice with two doses of OMV combined with SARS-CoV-2, and the use of mesoporous silica SBa15 and SBa16 adsorbed to the same virus.

Background: Mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) is a deforming type of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis caused by () that frequently does not respond to treatment. Despite its relapsing clinical course, few parasites are usually found in mucosal lesions. Host and parasite factors may be responsible for this paradox in the pathogenesis of the disease, allowing for both a low parasite burden and the inability of the host to clear and eliminate the disease.

Background: The diversity of Conservation Units in Brazil, ranging from Strict Protection areas like National Parks to Sustainable Use areas such as National Forests, supports the coexistence of human populations with extensive traditional knowledge of local natural resources. This traditional and local knowledge plays a crucial role in their subsistence and has significant potential to contribute to bioprospecting initiatives, as well as to enhance research and strategies for biological conservation. The São Sebastião de Marinaú community, situated within the Caxiuanã National Forest, offers valuable opportunities for ethnobiological studies.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a plasticizer used to synthesize polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins and is well-known for its endocrine-disrupting action. BPA occurrence in the environment is widespread, and there is a growing concern regarding exposure to this chemical during childhood, given the findings indicating the long-lasting hazards associated with exposure during early life compared to adulthood. We examined urinary BPA concentrations from 319 elementary school-aged Brazilian children, using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized through green synthesis routes are widely used as antimicrobial agents due to their advantages such as biocompatibility, stability, sustainability, speed and cost-effectiveness. Although AgNPs appear to be more potent than silver ions, the mechanisms related to their antibacterial activity are not yet fully understood. The most common proposed mechanism of AgNPs' toxicity so far is the release of silver ions and/or specific functions of the particles.

Combination therapy integrated with nanotechnology offers a promising alternative for breast cancer treatment. The inclusion of pequi oil, anacardic acid (AA), and docetaxel (DTX) in a nanoemulsion can amplify the antitumor effects of each molecule while reducing adverse effects. Therefore, the study aims to develop pequi oil-based nanoemulsions (PeNE) containing DTX (PDTX) or AA (PAA) and to evaluate their cytotoxicity against triple-negative breast cancer cells (4T1) in vitro.

The propagation of oil palm through somatic embryogenesis is the most effective method of cloning this palm tree; however, in vitro cultivation can lead to abnormalities in plant tissue, such as hyperhydricity. The present study aimed to evaluate the difference in anatomical, morphological, and histochemical characteristics, and gene expression in normal (Nm) and hyperhydric (Hh) somatic embryos of oil palm. For this purpose, Nm and Hh somatic embryos were collected from the differentiation medium and were submitted to anatomical and histochemical analyses to assess the nucleus/cytoplasm ratio (toluidine blue), starch (Lugol), and proteins (XP), as well as ultrastructural analyses via transmission electron microscopy.

Background: Hybrids are expected to show greater phenotypic variation than their parental species, yet how hybrid phenotype expression varies with genetic distances in closely-related parental species remains surprisingly understudied. Here, we investigate pelage and morphometric trait variation in anthropogenic hybrids between four species of Brazilian Callithrix marmosets, a relatively recent primate radiation. Marmoset species are distinguishable by pelage phenotype and morphological specializations for eating tree exudates.
