Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of bacterial infections in respiratory diseases. It secretes molecules to dampen host immunity, and the recently identified adenosine is one of these molecules. The type IIA secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2-IIA) is a host protein endowed with antibacterial properties, especially against Gram-positive bacteria such as S.

Accumulating evidence indicates that RNA metabolism components assemble into supramolecular cellular structures to mediate functional compartmentalization within the cytoplasmic membrane of the bacterial cell. This cellular compartmentalization could play important roles in the processes of RNA degradation and maturation. These components include Hfq, the RNA chaperone protein, which is involved in the post-transcriptional control of protein synthesis mainly by the virtue of its interactions with several small regulatory ncRNAs (sRNA).

Among trace metal pollutants, zinc is the major one in the rivers from the Paris urban area, such as the Orge River, where Zn concentration in the suspended particulate matter (SPM) can reach 2000 mg/kg in the most urbanized areas. In order to better understand Zn cycling in such urban rivers, we have determined Zn speciation in SPM as a function of both the seasonal water flow variations and the urbanization gradient along the Orge River. Using TEM/SEM-EDX and linear combination fitting (LCF) of EXAFS data at the Zn K-edge, we show that Zn mainly occurs as tetrahedrally coordinated Zn(2+) sorbed to ferrihydrite (37-46%), calcite (0-37%), amorphous SiO2 (0-21%), and organic-P (0-30%) and as octahedrally coordinated Zn(2+) in the octahedral layer of phyllosilicates (18-25%).

Introduction: Optic nerve sheath meningioma (ONSM) is a common benign neoplasm arising from the arachnoid tissue encapsulating the optic nerve and affects mainly middle aged women. It is a slow-growing tumor for which there is still no consensus on treatment.
Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of fractionated targeted proton beam therapy (PBT) in the treatment of ONSM and to define its role in the treatment of these tumors.

Secondary radiation, particularly neutron radiation, is a cause of concern in proton therapy. However, one can take advantage of its presence by using it to retrieve useful information on the primary proton beam. At the Centre Antoine Lacassagne the secondary radiation in the treatment room has been studied in function of the beam modulation.

A series of 5,11,17-triazatrinaphthylene (TrisK) derivatives, large disk-like π-conjugated molecules with C3h symmetry, has been synthesised by following an optimised synthetic pathway. The synthesis was performed by a four-step protocol based on the N-arylation of 1,3,5-tribromobenzene with appropriate anthranilate derivatives. This strategy permits the generation of either chlorinated (TrisK-Cl-OCn) or non-chlorinated (TrisK-H-OCn) alkoxy-substituted derivatives (OCn H2n+1 with n=3, 10, 12 and 16), thus providing additional versatility in the control of the structure-property relationships.

Background: Supratentorial diffuse low-grade gliomas in adults extend beyond maximal visible MRI-defined abnormalities, and a gap exists between the imaging signal changes and the actual tumor margins. Direct quantitative comparisons between imaging and histological analyses are lacking to date. However, they are of the utmost importance if one wishes to develop realistic models for diffuse glioma growth.

In this paper, we present an experimental study of the friction between a smooth elastomer lens and an elastomer substrate micropatterned with hexagonal arrays of cylindrical pillars. Depending on the normal load, the surfaces can be in top or mixed contact. The friction force can be interpreted in terms of friction stresses in the full contact and top contact zones.

The normal stress exerted by particles in a sheared suspension is measured by analogy with a method used to measure osmotic pressure in solutions. Particles in a liquid are confined by a fine screen to a gap between two vertical concentric cylinders, the inner of which rotates. Pressure in the liquid is sensed either by a manometer or by a pressure transducer across the screen.

Centrins are calcium-binding proteins that play a significant role in the maintenance of the centrosomal organization, mainly in the continuity between centrosome and microtubular network. Recent data showed that centrosome duplication abnormalities, like overduplication for example, could be due to hydrogen peroxide, suggesting an important impact of oxidative stress. To challenge this hypothesis, we performed one-electron oxidation experiments with human centrin 2, starting from azide radicals.

We study the propagation of a noninteracting atom laser distorted by the strong lensing effect of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) from which it is outcoupled. We observe a transverse structure containing caustics that vary with the density within the residing BEC. Using the WKB approximation, Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral formalism, and ABCD matrices, we are able to describe analytically the atom-laser propagation.

Gravity waves were generated at the interface between miscible fluids, or at the top of a settling suspension or a fluidized bed. For these three systems the dispersion relation was measured and compared to the theory and calculated between two buoyant viscous fluids without surface tension. The experimental findings are found to be in good agreement with theory when effective viscosity and volume-averaged density values are used.

When growing in a stress gradient, cracks have a directional growth. We investigate here this type of instability in the case of a colloidal gel deposited on a substrate and left to dry. The use of various materials reveals the existence of two distinct types of dynamics.

We analyze the extraction from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate to a nontrapping state of a coherent atomic beam and its subsequent fall, at T = 0 K. Our treatment fully takes gravity into account but neglects the mean-field potential exerted on the free falling beam by the trapped atoms. We derive analytical expressions for the output rate and the output mode of the quasicontinuous "atom laser.

We report the realization of a Bose-Einstein condensate of metastable atoms (helium in the lowest triplet state). The excitation energy of each atom with respect to the ground state is 20 electron volts, but inelastic processes that would destroy the sample are suppressed strongly enough in a spin-polarized sample to allow condensation. Our detection scheme takes advantage of the metastability to achieve detection of individual atoms as well as of the decay products of inelastic processes.
