Viscous flows through pipes and channels are steady and ordered until, with increasing velocity, the laminar motion catastrophically breaks down and gives way to turbulence. How this apparently discontinuous change from low- to high-dimensional motion can be rationalized within the framework of the Navier-Stokes equations is not well understood. Exploiting geometrical properties of transitional channel flow we trace turbulence to far lower Reynolds numbers (Re) than previously possible and identify the complete path that reversibly links fully turbulent motion to an invariant solution.

Introduction: The treatment of conjunctival melanoma is most often conservative, but exenteration is sometimes necessary in order to achieve local control of the disease. Nephrotic syndrome is traditionally defined using the triad of edema, hypoalbuminemia, and proteinuria, but this syndrome is very heterogeneous and difficult to clarify. Its idiopathic form (INS) is probably the most harmful and essentially comprises two entities: minimal change disease (MCD) and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). We will consider some hypotheses regarding the mechanisms underlying INS: (i) the presence of several glomerular permeability factors in the sera of patients that alter the morphology and function of podocytes leading to proteinuria, (ii) the putative role of immune cells.

Among over 100 proton therapy centres worldwide in operation or under construction, French proton therapy is coming to full maturity with the recent opening of the Nice (1991, upgrade in 2016) and Caen (2018) facilities next to the Orsay (1991, upgrade in 2010) centre. Proton therapy is a national priority for children and young adults in all three centres. The patient-related activity of the three French centres is coordinated via the Protonshare portal to optimise referral by type of indication and available expertise in coordination with the French society of radiation oncology SFRO and French radiotherapy centres.

Accounting for a control role of monoamine neurotransmitters, the guided propagation (GP) memory model may contribute to investigate the consequences of neuromodulation impairments on development disorders such as autism. A prenatal transient excess of 'monoamine oxidase A' enzyme is assumed here to trigger persistent epigenetic regulations that would induce imbalanced metabolisms of synaptic monoamines.

The physicochemical properties of [Trp-H] and [TrpCl] (n = 1, 2) have been investigated in a combined computational and experimental infrared multiple dissociation (IRMPD) study. IRMPD spectra within the 850-1900 cm region indicate that deprotonation is localized on the carboxylic acid moiety in [Trp-H] clusters. A combination of hydrogen bonding and higher order charge-quadrupole interactions appear to influence cluster geometries for all investigated systems.

Introduction: Surgical excision of large malignant lower eyelid tumors may cause important full-thickness eyelid defects. The reconstruction of such defects must restore the physiologic function of the eyelid and also re-establish an acceptable aesthetic result.

Materials And Methods: We report the outcomes of full-thickness excision of tumors extending over half of the horizontal lid length, followed by reconstruction using a nasal chondromucosal graft (coming from the ipsilateral ala of the nose) and an upper eyelid myocutaneous flap.

It is generally assumed that molecules behave ergodically during chemical reactions, that is, reactivities depend only on the total energy content and not on the initial state of the molecule. While there are a few examples of nonergodic behavior in small (usually electronically excited) species, to date there have been no reports of such behavior in larger covalently bound species composed of several tens of atoms. This report describes a protocol for preparing thick biological specimens for further observation using a scanning transmission electron microscope. It also describes an imaging method for studying the 3D structure of thick biological specimens by scanning transmission electron tomography. The sample preparation protocol is based on conventional methods in which the sample is fixed using chemical agents, treated with a heavy atom salt contrasting agent, dehydrated in a series of ethanol baths, and embedded in resin.

Interaction of BF with All-cis 1,2,3,4,5,6 Hexafluorocyclohexane in the Gas Phase.

Clusters of all-cis 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexafluorocyclohexane and the dodecafluorododecaboron dianion, [CFH][BF] (n = 0-4), are investigated in a combined experimental and computational study. DFT calculations and IRMPD spectra in the region of 800-2000 cm indicate that CHF binds to open trigonal faces of BF via a three-point interlocking binding motif. Calculated binding interactions reveal substantial contributions from C-H···F hydrogen bonding and binding energies that are among the strongest observed for a neutral-anion system.

The structures and properties of a series of phenylalanine (Phe) derivatives have been investigated in a joint computational and experimental infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) study. IRMPD spectra in the 1000-2000 cm region show that protonation is localized on the amine group in all cases. Intramolecular cation-π interactions between the ammonium group and the phenyl ring heavily influence molecular geometries and properties such as gas phase basicity and proton affinity.

Hypercoordinated complexes involving tricarbastannatrane cation [N(CHCHCH)Sn] with various Lewis bases are investigated in the gas and solution phases using a combination of infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Coordination is found to occur at the apical position leading to a pentacoordinated Sn center. Strongly electron donating Lewis bases disrupt the N···Sn transannular interaction and induce higher degrees of geometric distortion at the metal center than weakly donating Lewis bases, an effect that manifests as anharmonic shifts in the vibrational spectra.

Various methods exist for room acoustic measurements. To increase the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR), averaging of repeated room impulse responses (RIR) can be performed under the assumption of time-invariant systems. Associated with a study of the Paris Notre Dame cathedral, time-variances due to minute temperature changes were observed which confounded results of averaged RIRs, producing significantly shorter reverberation times.

Experiments have been carried out in which electrospray ionization has been used to generate ionic complexes of all-cis 1,2,3,4,5,6 hexafluorocyclohexane. These complexes were subsequently mass isolated in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer and then irradiated by the tunable infrared output of a free electron laser in the 800-1600 cm(-1) range. From the frequency dependence of the fragmentation of the complexes, vibrational signatures of the complexes were obtained.

A combination of infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations have been employed to study the structures and mode-specific dissociation pathways of the proton-bound dimer of 3-trifluoromethylphenylalanine (3-CF3-Phe) and trimethylamine (TMA). Three structural motifs are identified: canonical (charge-solvated), zwitterionic (charge-separated), and TMA-bridged. In the 1000-1350 cm(-1) region, similar spectra are observed in the TMA·H(+) and 3-CF3-Phe·H(+) product channels.

Objective: To summarize recent research and present a selection of the best papers published in 2014 in the field of clinical Natural Language Processing (NLP).

Method: A systematic review of the literature was performed by the two section editors of the IMIA Yearbook NLP section by searching bibliographic databases with a focus on NLP efforts applied to clinical texts or aimed at a clinical outcome. A shortlist of candidate best papers was first selected by the section editors before being peer-reviewed by independent external reviewers.
