Departament de Matemàtiques (EPSEB) and Institut de Matemàtiques de la UPC (IMTech), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - Barcelona TECH, Av. Dr. Marañón, 44-50, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08028, Spain.

Mathematical modeling of neuronal dynamics has experienced a fast growth in the last decades thanks to the biophysical formalism introduced by Hodgkin and Huxley in the 1950s. Other types of models (for instance, integrate and fire models), although less realistic, have also contributed to understand neuronal dynamics. However, there is still a vast volume of data that have not been associated with a mathematical model, mainly because data are acquired more rapidly than they can be analyzed or because it is difficult to analyze (for instance, if the number of ionic channels involved is huge).

July 2018

Investigador, Centro de Estudos Sociais/Universidade de Coimbra. Colégio de São Jerónimo, apartado 3087. 3000-995 - Coimbra - Portugal.

This article analyzes how responsible innovation has been discussed and implemented in the context of one of the Portuguese government's main activities to foster nanotechnology. Through the actor-network theory and the sociology of absences, we investigate the process of coproduction at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory to identify how concerns about responsible development have been implemented or ignored in the rules and practices. The institute emerged from a sociotechnical imagination that views it as an autonomous unit for producing technological innovations aimed exclusively at increasing competitiveness in a global market, which has been an obstacle to the materialization of robust responsible development practices.

According to Buffon, the difference between man's cognitive abilities and those of other animals could not be attributed to natural causes. Noting these differences necessarily meant accepting that the Creator had endowed man with an immaterial soul that was unparalleled among animals. This article seeks to show that Buffon's abandonment of naturalism was not the result of a theological premise but of the impossibility of reconciling the presumed heterogeneity between animal and human cognitive faculties with the materialist explanation of the origin of species that Buffon outlined in the course of his writings.

Departamento de Microbiologia, Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas, Universidade de São Paulo, Av. Prof. Lineu Prestes 1374, 05508-000, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Background: As bacterial cells enter stationary phase, they adjust their growth rate to comply with nutrient restriction and acquire increased resistance to several stresses. These events are regulated by controlling gene expression at this phase, changing the mode of exponential growth into that of growth arrest, and increasing the expression of proteins involved in stress resistance. The two-component system SpdR/SpdS is required for the activation of transcription of the Caulobacter crescentus cspD gene at the onset of stationary phase.
