Article Synopsis
  • Recent research contradicts earlier beliefs that glyphosate-based products like Roundup Transorb R® (RT) are safe for bees, showing they can be toxic and increase mortality or cause sublethal effects.
  • The study evaluated the toxicity of RT on Africanized honey bees through both acute and chronic exposure experiments, focusing on impacts on mortality, flight capacity, and midgut tissue damage.
  • Findings indicate that chronic oral exposure can lead to higher mortality rates and damage to the midgut, while acute exposure negatively affected the bees' walking ability, suggesting significant harm from RT on A. mellifera.

Multiple potentially toxic elements in urban gardens from a Brazilian industrialized city.

Environ Geochem Health

January 2024

Centro de Ciências Naturais e Humanas, Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC), Avenida Dos Estados, 5001 - Bairro Santa Terezinha, Santo André, SP, 09210-580, Brazil.

Urban agriculture should be promoted as long as the food produced is safe for consumption. Located in the metropolitan region of São Paulo-Brazil, Santo André has intense industrial activities and more recently an increasing stimulus to urban gardening. One of the potential risks associated to this activity is the presence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs).

Phytosanitary control is essential to ensure agricultural productivity and quality. However, approaches based on scheduled use of pesticides, overuse of harmful molecules produce impacts on different types of living organisms. Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPM-IDM) may significantly reduce the burden of pesticides in the environment.

Aspergillus welwitschiae: A Potential amylases Producer.

Curr Microbiol

September 2022

Universidade Estadual de Londrina, P.O. Box 6001, Londrina, 86051-990, Brazil.

Amylases, glycoside hydrolases widely used in several industrial processes, can be produced by many animals, plants, bacteria, and fungi. Fungal amylases from Aspergillus sp. hold remarkable importance in biotechnological applications for presenting a great catalysis efficiency in a wide range of pH and temperature.

The association between self-reported changes in working conditions and the incidence of recommended levels of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among middle and high school teachers of the public school network was analyzed. It is a prospective cohort in which 298 teachers from the public middle and high school network in Londrina, State of Paraná, were monitored for 24 months. The incidence of recommended LTPA levels (≥150 minutes/week) was the study outcome.

The incidence of pediatric adrenocortical tumors (ACT) is high in southern Brazil due to the founder R337H variant. Neonatal screening/surveillance (NSS) for this variant resulted in early ACT detection and improved outcomes. The medical records of children with ACT who did not participate in newborn screening (non-NSS) were reviewed (2012-2018).

In prostate cancer, flavonoids possess a wide variety of anticancer effects, focused on the antioxidant/pro-oxidant activity, inactivation of the androgen receptor, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis induction, metastasis inhibition, among others. This current research investigated the antitumoral in vitro activity of Brachydin A (BrA), a dimeric flavonoid isolated from , in human castration-resistant prostate cancer DU145. It was compared BrA selective effects in tumor prostate DU145 cells with non-tumor prostate epithelial PNT2 cells.

The scope of this study was to analyze the inclusion of general hospitals in Healthcare Networks and the factors that determine their participation in these networks. A "scoping review" was conducted with the selection of 14 articles published between January 2011 and June 2018. From the mapping of the results the categories of analysis were constituted: Hospital, regionalization and economy of scale; Fragility of network organization and hospital as first choice; and Hospital and evidence of (dis) integration of the Healthcare Networks.

Stress is an energy-demanding process, as well as the responses of the innate immune system, that impose a metabolic overload on cellular energy production, which can affect the cellular redox balance, causing oxidative damage. We evaluated the role of stress in the modulation of innate immune and oxidative/antioxidant mechanisms in juvenile pacu exposed to acute and chronic stressors. The experimental period lasted 30 days, and fish (113.

Itália km 8, 96203-900 Rio Grande, RS, Brazil. Electronic address:

The entrance of the anti-inflammatory diclofenac in water bodies is a consequence of inappropriate use, incorrect disposal, and inefficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in removing this drug from sewage, among others. Effects of diclofenac on non-target aquatic organisms still need to be clarified. The objective of this work was to evaluate the toxic effects of the diclofenac on larvae and adults of Danio rerio.

Objective: This a cross-sectional study to evaluate the association between oral health findings and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) among critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICU).

Material And Methods: Data were collected from medical records, and a detailed oral physical examination was performed on 663 critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation. Data were statistically analysed using univariate and logistic regression models relating the development of VAP with the oral findings.

The garlic contains sulfur bioactive compounds responsible for medicinal properties. The decrease of these compounds due to inadequate storage conditions reduces the beneficial properties and favors infection by microorganisms. Several studies have shown high frequency of garlic infected with Aspergillus section Nigri that potentially produce mycotoxin.

The R337H mutation is associated with increased incidence of pediatric adrenocortical tumor (ACT). The different environmental conditions where R337H carriers live have not been systematically analyzed. Here, the R337H frequencies, ACT incidences, and R337H penetrance for ACT were calculated using the 2006 cohort with 4165 R337H carriers living in Paraná state (PR) subregions.

CXCL12 and TP53 genetic polymorphisms as markers of susceptibility in a Brazilian children population with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

July 2013

Laboratory of Study and Applications of DNA Polymorphisms, Department of Pathological Science, Biological Science Center, State University of Londrina, Campus Universitário-Rod. Celso Garcia Cid (PR 445) Km 380, Londrina, PR, CEP 86051-970, Brazil.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric malignancy. Genetic polymorphisms in the 3'UTR region of the CXCL12 (rs1801157) and TP53 codon 72 (rs1042522) genes may contribute to susceptibility to childhood ALL because they affect some important processes, such as metastasis regulation and tumor suppression. Thus the objective of the present study was to detect the frequency of two genetic polymorphisms in ALL patients and controls and to add information their impact on genetic susceptibility and prognosis.
