Periostin (POSTN), a matricellular protein predominantly secreted by cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), has emerged as a key regulator of cancer progression and therapy response. This review provides an overview of recent findings regarding the diverse roles of periostin in cancer therapy and its potential as a therapeutic target. Studies have elucidated periostin's involvement in tumorigenesis, including tumor growth, metastasis, chemotherapy resistance, and modulation of the tumor microenvironment (TME).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates a new protein, rEnd2, from a bacteriophage that targets and degrades the protective outer layer of bacteria, particularly focusing on its interaction with the antibiotic colistin and its effectiveness when paired with nanoparticles.
  • - The purification and analysis of rEnd2 showed it works best in neutral pH and warm temperatures, with a structural similarity to other known antibacterial proteins, but it loses effectiveness in the presence of certain surfactants.
  • - Despite demonstrating some ability to break down bacterial structure, rEnd2 was not effective enough on its own or even when combined with colistin, indicating the need for further research to improve its antimicrobial capabilities.

We investigated the in vitro antibacterial activity of the combination rifampicin (RIF) + polymyxin B (PB) against extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. We evaluated clinical isolates co-resistant to PB (non-mcr carriers; eptB, mgrB, pmr operon, and ramA mutations) and to carbapenems (KPC, CTX-M, and SHV producers; including KPC + NDM co-producer), belonging to sequence types (ST) ST16, ST11, ST258, ST340, and ST437. We used the standard broth microdilution method to determine RIF and PB minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the checkerboard assay to evaluate the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) of RIF + PB as well as to investigate the lowest concentrations of RIF and PB that combined (RIF + PB) had antibacterial activity.

Prostate cancer (PCa) relapse, defined either by persistent PSA levels (after RP) or biochemical recurrence (BCR), is a common occurrence. The imaging evaluation of patients experiencing PCa relapse has undergone significant advancements in the past decade, notably with the introduction of new Positron Emission Tomography (PET) tracers such as Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), and the progress in functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This article will explore the role of traditional imaging, the evolution of MRI towards the development of the Prostate Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Local Recurrence Reporting (PI-RR) scoring system, and how next-generation imaging is enhancing diagnostic accuracy in the setting of PCa relapse, which is essential for adopting personalized strategies that may ultimately impact outcomes.

Introduction: Chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress are pivotal contributors to the metabolic complications associated with obesity. Selenoprotein P (SELENOP) and glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) are selenoproteins involved in the reduction of reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory cytokines levels. Nutritional epigenomics revealed the interaction of microRNAs and nutrients with an important impact on metabolic pathways involved in obesity.

Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) is a fish with a high production potential in Brazil. However, one limitation is the excessive amount of ether extract in its carcass, an undesirable characteristic for the consumer. One approach to overcome this limitation is to improve carcass quality through zootechnical additives such as caffeine.

Sjogren's disease (SjD) is an autoimmune disease that is characterized not only by the sicca symptoms it causes but also by its systemic nature, which is capable of several and not yet fully understood extraglandular manifestations. To gain a clearer understanding of these manifestations as well as a better practical approach, a panel of experts from the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the identification of epidemiologic and clinical features of the extraglandular manifestations present in ESSDAI (EULAR Sjogren´s syndrome disease activity index), followed by a voting panel with recommendations for clinical practice. This publication is complementary to others already published and covers cutaneous and hematological manifestations, with prevalence data generated by a meta-analysis of 13 clinical or laboratory manifestations and 6 clinical management recommendations.

Purpose Of Review: More than a century since its discovery, the pathogenesis of Chagas heart disease (CHD) remains incompletely understood. The role of derangements in the autonomic control of the heart in triggering malignant arrhythmia before the appearance of contractile ventricular impairment was reviewed.

Recent Findings: Although previous investigations had demonstrated the anatomical and functional consequences of parasympathetic dysautonomia upon the heart rate control, only recently, coronary microvascular disturbances and sympathetic denervation at the ventricular level have been reported in patients and experimental models of CHD, exploring with nuclear medicine methods their impact on the progression of myocardial dysfunction and cardiac arrhythmias.

Magnesium and calcium are elements that have been associated with cardiometabolic risk factors related to metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, there are gaps in the knowledge regarding the impact of the calcium to magnesium (Ca/Mg) ratio in plasma. Thus, we aim to evaluate the associations between magnesium and calcium levels in plasma, and the Ca/Mg ratio in plasma with MetS components and other cardiometabolic risk factors.

We aimed to evaluate the bacterial growth and diversity in vacuum-packed beef bags stored at different temperatures and to monitor blown-pack spoilage. We used culture-based methods and high-throughput sequencing to study the development of the main bacterial groups naturally present in beef stored at 4 and 15 °C for 28 days. The growth of sulfite-reducing clostridium (SRC) was impaired in beef bags stored at 4 °C; significant differences among SRC counts were observed in beef bags stored at 4 and 15 °C on days 14, 21, and 28 (P = 0.

Although there are reports that polyphenol resveratrol (Rsv) may cause muscle hypertrophy in basal conditions and attenuate muscle wasting in catabolic situations, its mechanism of action is still unclear. Our study evaluated the ex vivo effects of Rsv on protein metabolism and intracellular signaling in innervated (sham-operated; Sham) and 3-day sciatic denervated (Den) rat skeletal muscles. Rsv (10-4 M) reduced total proteolysis (40%) in sham muscles.

University of Sao Paulo, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirao Preto, Department of Clinical Analyses, Toxicology, and Food Sciences, Analytical and System Toxicology Laboratory, Avenida do Café s/n°, 14040-903, Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Infant formula intake is recommended to ensure comprehensive nutritional and caloric fulfillment when exclusive breastfeeding is not possible. However, similarly to breast milk, infant formulas may also contain pollutants capable of inducing endocrine-disrupting and neurotoxic effects. Thus, considering the sensitivity of their developing physiological systems and that infants have heightened susceptibility to environmental influences, this study was aimed at assessing the contents of essential elements, and inorganic and organic pollutants in infant formulas marketed in Brazil.

Soil δN spatial distribution is primarily shaped by climatic patterns in the semiarid Caatinga, Northeast Brazil.

Soil nitrogen isotopic composition (δN) is an invaluable tool as it integrates nitrogen (N) transformations in soils. In addition to serving as a baseline to understand the N cycle, spatial representations of δN across landscapes (or isoscapes) is a multi-purpose tool useful to investigate, for example, plant-microbe interactions, animal migration and forensics. We investigate the climatic and edaphic controls of δN utilising data from 29 geographical locations sampled across the semiarid Brazilian Caatinga biome.
