Background: This study aims to assess the benefit of a deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) over the standard irradiation technique, and eventually to identify anatomical and/or treatment preplanning characteristics correlated with the LAD dose.
Methods: Patients with left-sided breast cancer undergoing whole breast radiotherapy with DIBH were analyzed. All patients included in the analysis had plans in DIBH and free-breathing (FB).

European patients cross the borders of their countries to receive more patient-centred healthcare. Benchmarking across European countries for the patient-centredness of endometriosis care had yet to be performed. This study proved the factorial structure and reliability of translation of the ENDOCARE questionnaire in nine different languages.

A consensus of experts has recently proposed the novel definition of 'metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease, MAFLD' instead of 'nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD', emphasizing the central role of dysmetabolism in the disease pathogenesis. Conversely, a direct and independent contribution of FLD on risk of developing T2D is still a controversial topic.

The present study was carried out to understand the adaptive strategies developed by for chronic colonization of the cystic fibrosis (CF) lung. For this purpose, 13 temporally isolated strains from a single CF patient chronically infected over a 10-year period were systematically characterized for growth rate, biofilm formation, motility, mutation frequencies, antibiotic resistance, and pathogenicity. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) showed over time the presence of two distinct groups, each consisting of two different pulsotypes.

Wheat kernels contain fructans, fructose based oligosaccharides with prebiotic properties, in levels between 2 and 35 weight % depending on the developmental stage of the kernel. To improve knowledge on the metabolic pathways leading to fructan storage and degradation, carbohydrate fluxes occurring during durum wheat kernel development were analyzed. Kernels were collected at various developmental stages and quali-quantitative analysis of carbohydrates (mono- and di-saccharides, fructans, starch) was performed, alongside analysis of the activities and gene expression of the enzymes involved in their biosynthesis and hydrolysis.

Despite numerous circumstantial evidences, the pathogenic role of TGF-β in primary myelofibrosis (PMF), the most severe of the Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms, is still unclear because of the modest (2-fold) increases in its plasma levels observed in PMF patients and in the Gata1(low) mouse model. Whether myelofibrosis is associated with increased bioavailability of TGF-β bound to fibrotic fibres is unknown. Transmission electron-microscopy (TEM) observations identified that spleen from PMF patients and Gata1(low) mice contained megakaryocytes with abnormally high levels of TGF-β and collagen fibres embedded in their cytoplasm.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of an acute L-dopa administration on eye-closed resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) activity of cognitively preserved Parkinsonian patients.
Methods: We examined 24 right-handed patients diagnosed as uncomplicated probable Parkinson's disease (PD). Each patient underwent Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS)-part-III evaluation before and 60 min after an oral load of L-dopa-methyl-ester/carbidopa 250/25 mg.

Background: Neoadjuvant therapies have significantly improved local control and survival of patients with rectal cancer. Nevertheless, although a complete pathologic response can be achieved in 30% of cases, a transabdominal surgical resection is always required. This study aimed, for the first time, to test in the literature the feasibility of local excision combined with transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) as a surgical option for patients treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiation.
