Purpose: Cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) share age as a main risk factor and thus have a high coincidence. Both conditions substantially reduce visual acuity. This study aimed to assess the impact of cataract surgery on visual acuity, retinal morphology, and VEGF inhibitor therapy in patients with AMD.

"Medical scientists" are postgraduate investigators who are engaged in biomedical research, and either hold a biomedical PhD or are qualified in medicine but do not participate in patient care. Medical scientists constitute ~40% of staff at medical faculties and >90% at nonuniversity medical research institutions in Germany. However, medical scientists in Germany face limited long-term career prospects and a lack of dedicated training and support programmes.

Platelets are crucial in thrombus formation during ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). In addition, they also play an important role in postischemic thromboinflammation, which is determined by the interplay between activated platelets and neutrophils. The latter form neutrophil extracellular traps, which are detectable in plasma as citrullinated histone H3-deoxyribonucleic acid-DNA complexes.

A healthy and balanced diet is an important factor to assure a good functioning of the central and peripheral nervous system. Retinoid X receptor (RXR)-mediated signaling was identified as an important mechanism of transmitting major diet-dependent physiological and nutritional signaling such as the control of myelination and dopamine signalling. Recently, vitamin A5/X, mainly present in vegetables as provitamin A5/X, was identified as a new concept of a vitamin which functions as the nutritional precursor for enabling RXR-mediated signaling.

This study explores how 14-15 h fasting or acute exercise affects immune cell epigenetics, specifically focusing on miRNAs in mononuclear cells. Findings suggest fasting significantly impacts microRNAs associated with endothelial metabolism compared to exercise, but does not directly connect these changes to cell apoptosis or autophagy. This enhances comprehension of cellular self-consumption under health-promoting interventions.

Objectives: We investigated whether GH resistance is associated with changes in left ventricular (LV) mass (cardiac wasting) in patients with cancer.
Methods: We measured plasma IGF-I, GH, and GHBP in 159 women and 148 men with cancer (83% stage III/IV).

: The popularity of robotic-assisted surgery for rectal cancer is increasing, but its superiority over the laparoscopic approach regarding safety, efficacy, and costs has not been well established. : A retrospective single-center study was conducted comparing consecutively performed robotic-assisted and laparoscopic surgeries for rectal cancer between 1 January 2016 and 31 September 2021. In total, 125 adult patients with sporadic rectal adenocarcinoma (distal extent ≤ 15 cm from the anal verge) underwent surgery where 66 were operated on robotically and 59 laparoscopically.

The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of serum soluble B7-H3 (sB7-H3) as a diagnostic marker for early-stage nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its potential for evaluating the prognosis of patients with advanced-stage NSCLC. In this study, an ELISA was employed to detect the expression levels of sB7-H3 in a cohort of patients diagnosed with NSCLC ( n = 122) and a control group ( n = 42) during the same observation period. Comparative analyses were conducted to ascertain the variations in sB7-H3 concentrations between the NSCLC cohort and the healthy control group, as well as across pathological types and the presence and absence of lymph node metastasis.

Background And Aims: Spotty calcium deposits (SCD) represent a vulnerable plaque feature which seems to result - as based on recent invitro studies - from inflammatory vessel-wall interactions. SCD can be reliably assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Their prognostic impact is yet unknown.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who exhibit elevated blood eosinophil levels often experience worsened lung function and more severe emphysema. This implies the potential involvement of eosinophils in the development of emphysema. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the development of eosinophil-mediated emphysema remain unclear.

In the last century, vitamin A was identified that included the nutritional relevant vitamin A1 / provitamin A1, as well as the vitamin A2 pathway concept. Globally, nutritional guidelines have focused on vitamin A1 with simplified recommendations and calculations based solely on vitamin A. The vitamin A / provitamin A terminology described vitamin A with respect to acting as a precursor of 11-cis-retinal, the chromophore of the visual pigment, as well as retinoic acid(s), being ligand(s) of the nuclear hormone receptors retinoic acid receptors (RARs) α, β and γ.

For patients with celiac disease (CeD), a lifelong gluten-free diet is not a voluntary lifestyle choice-it is a necessity. The key end points in clinical follow-up are symptom resolution, the normalization of weight, prevention of overweight, seroconversion, and negation or minimization of increased long-term morbidity. For the latter, a surrogate endpoint is mucosal healing, which means the normalization of histology to Marsh 0-1.

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been proposed as a feasible treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). However, meta-analytic evidence is heterogenous and data from multicentre trials are scarce. We aimed to assess the efficacy of tDCS versus sham stimulation as an additional treatment to a stable dose of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in adults with MDD.
