To further understand the impact of deficiency of the autoimmune regulator () gene during the adhesion of medullary thymic epithelial cells (mTECs) to thymocytes, we sequenced single-cell libraries (scRNA-seq) obtained from wild-type (WT) ( ) or -deficient ( ) mTECs cocultured with WT single-positive (SP) CD4 thymocytes. Although the libraries differed in their mRNA and long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) profiles, indicating that mTECs were heterogeneous in terms of their transcriptome, UMAP clustering revealed that both mTEC lines expressed their specific markers, i.e.

Background: TENIS syndrome is characterized by reduced expression of sodium-iodine symporter, rising serum thyroglobulin (Tg) levels, and negative whole-body 131 I scans. In such patients, somatostatin receptor imaging with 68 Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT (somatostatin receptor [SSR] PET/CT) and 18 F-FDG PET/CT (FDG PET/CT) can identify metastases and were compared under 2 conditions: elevated (eTSH) and suppressed (sTSH) TSH serum levels. Potential candidates for peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRNT) were identified in 15 patients prospectively enrolled.

Mandible development under gestational protein restriction: cellular and molecular mechanisms.

J Mol Histol

October 2024

Fetal Programming and Hydroelectrolyte Metabolism Laboratory, Department of Internal Medicine, FCM, Campinas State University (UNICAMP), Campinas, SP, Brazil.

Insufficient evidence regarding how maternal undernutrition affects craniofacial bone development persists. With its unique focus on the impact of gestational protein restriction on calvaria and mandible osteogenesis, this study aims to fill, at least in part, this gap. Female mice were mated and randomized into NP (normal protein) or LP (low protein) groups.

This study describes the interaction of human serum albumin (HSA) with the binol derivative (R)-(+)-3,3'-dibromo-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (R-BrB), which has its optical activity based on the prohibitive energetic barrier for conversion into the enantiomer (S)-(+)-3,3'-dibromo-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (S-BrB). The objective was to assess the ability of HSA to differentiate axial enantiomers based on their binding efficiency and their impact on the CD spectra. We discovered that both enantiomers were effective ligands, and the CD signal disappeared when equimolar amounts of R-BrB and S-BrB were simultaneously added, indicating no preference for either enantiomer.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of 10% nanohydroxyapatite in an experimental resin infiltrant on color stability and mineral loss.

Material And Methods: Bovine enamel blocks were randomized into five groups (n = 27/group): SE (sound enamel); ICL (initial caries lesion); I (Icon®); E (experimental infiltrant); EH (experimental infiltrant containing 10% nanohydroxyapatite). Color evaluation (n = 15) was performed and CIEL*a*b* values were obtained at points T (baseline), T (14 days immersed on coffee solution), and T (28 days immersed) and data were calculated ∆E, ∆W, ∆L*, ∆a*, and ∆b*.

Among the vital signs collected during hospital triage, respiratory rate is an important parameter associated with physiological, pathophysiological, and emotional changes. In recent years, the importance of its verification in emergency centers due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS2) pandemic has become very clear, although it is still one of the least evaluated and collected vital signs. In this context, infrared imaging has been shown to be a reliable estimator of respiratory rate, with the advantage of not requiring physical contact with patients.

Cir Esp (Engl Ed)

December 2023

Colorectal Surgery Unit, Pontificia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUCPR), Curitiba, Brazil.

Introduction: Complications after ileocecal resection for Crohn's disease (CD) are frequent. The aim of this study was to analyze risk factors for postoperative complications after these procedures.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients treated surgically for Crohn's disease limited to the ileocecal region during an 8-year period at 10 medical centers specialized in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Latin America.

Impact of maternal protein restriction on Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF) expression in male fetal kidney development.

May 2023

Fetal Programming and Hydroelectrolyte Metabolism Laboratory, Nucleus of Medicine and Experimental Surgery, Department of Internal Medicine, FCM, Campinas State University (UNICAMP), Campinas, SP, Brazil.

Background: Kidney developmental studies have demonstrated molecular pathway changes that may be related to decreased nephron numbers in the male 17 gestational days (17GD) low protein (LP) intake offspring compared to normal protein intake (NP) progeny. Here, we evaluated the HIF-1 and components of its pathway in the kidneys of 17-GD LP offspring to elucidate the molecular modulations during nephrogenesis.

Methods: Pregnant Wistar rats were allocated into two groups: NP (regular protein diet-17%) or LP (Low protein diet-6%).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated how the probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 affects the severity of experimental periodontitis (EP) in rats undergoing chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5FU).
  • Eighty male rats were assigned to different treatment groups, including those receiving only 5FU, only the probiotic, both together, or other combinations, and were analyzed at the end of the treatment period.
  • Results indicated that the combination of 5FU and the probiotic reduced bone loss and improved immune response in periodontal tissues compared to 5FU alone, suggesting that B. lactis HN019 could help manage periodontitis during chemotherapy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the genetic links between vitamin D transporter protein and cytochrome P450-24A1 in cirrhosis patients, both with and without hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), analyzing their demographic, clinical, and biochemical profiles.
  • A total of 383 individuals were categorized into three groups: patients with cirrhosis and HCC, patients with isolated cirrhosis, and a control group without liver disease, using genetic analysis methods like real-time PCR.
  • Results indicated that specific genetic polymorphisms were more common in patients with HCC, highlighting factors such as advanced age, smoking, and diabetes as predictors for cirrhosis and HCC, while some genetic markers correlated with improved survival

Epigenetics and Diabetes Unit, Department of Clinical Sciences Malmö, Lund University Diabetes Center, Lund University, Clinical Research Centre, Scania University Hospital, Malmö, Sweden. Electronic address:

Aims: Synthetic glucocorticoids, including dexamethasone (DEX), are clinically prescribed due to their immunoregulatory properties. In excess they can perturb glucose homeostasis, with individuals predisposed to glucose intolerance more sensitive to these negative effects. While DEX is known to negatively impact β-cell function, it is unclear how.

Infectious diseases are still public health problems. Microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, and parasites are the main causing agents related to these diseases. In this context, the search for new effective strategies in prevention and/or treatment is considered essential, since current drugs often have side effects or end up, causing microbial resistance, making it a serious health problem.
